Quarterstaff does not have the reach property, but the feat Polearm Master seems to consider it a reach weapon. As a side issue, if it isn't a reach weapon, that would mean that there are no simple reach wepons, which seems odd.

I think the quaterstaff should have the reach property.

none of the powers given by polearm master need reach to work. they can use reach to work, but they dont need reach to work.

while i agree the intent was probly for only weapons with reach would be a part of it, neither of the two powers are based on needing to have reach.

Having practised some martial arts over the years, I would say no. A quarterstaff gives more reach then bare fists, but a longsword has nearly the same reach. A large sword like a claymore defnintaly matches it.

Staffs are more difficult to disarm, but easier to destroy (unless you are strong enough to use a mettle staff  - I used one for training and they make you really very fast when you go back to wood!)

Don't forget that a lot of eastern martial arts weapons came about because actual weapons like swords and polearms were illegal unless you were a soldier. So the the common people improvised weapons from farm implements and common items - over time these became specialised into actual purpose-made weapons. So the benefit of say, a quarterstaff is that you can take it just about anywhere without having it confiscated. And even if it is you can easily find something else to use as one.

Speaking of reach weapons, have you noticed that small characters cannot really use reach weapons, besides the whip?

I think the weapon needs to be longer than 6 feet for it to have the reach property.

As for reach weapons the best is the Lance used on foot, but I'm not sure if it's considered a polearm for the polearm master feat.
