while i agree the intent was probly for only weapons with reach would be a part of it, neither of the two powers are based on needing to have reach. |
| #45ShillingAug 18, 2014 3:05:56 | Having practised some martial arts over the years, I would say no. A quarterstaff gives more reach then bare fists, but a longsword has nearly the same reach. A large sword like a claymore defnintaly matches it.
Staffs are more difficult to disarm, but easier to destroy (unless you are strong enough to use a mettle staff - I used one for training and they make you really very fast when you go back to wood!)
Don't forget that a lot of eastern martial arts weapons came about because actual weapons like swords and polearms were illegal unless you were a soldier. So the the common people improvised weapons from farm implements and common items - over time these became specialised into actual purpose-made weapons. So the benefit of say, a quarterstaff is that you can take it just about anywhere without having it confiscated. And even if it is you can easily find something else to use as one. |

As for reach weapons the best is the Lance used on foot, but I'm not sure if it's considered a polearm for the polearm master feat.
