Should they be path of the Totem (Bear) Barbarian and just Rage, attack recklessly to increase chance of getting a critical, and just go crazy?
Let's say they have 20 Con, take average HP a level, that leaves them with 209 HP.
When they are raging they have resistance to all damage except psychic. How often do you face things with psychic damage?
I would say the best defense is to mind-control the Half-Orc and have it attack the party, correct? |

If he's Wreckless raging, he'll be immune to charm. Most go Totem warrior for the spell resist though. |

It’ll take time, but they can whittle the barbarian down, even with resistance. Another good trick might be some a hold person spell/paralytic ability/wall of force. Cast that and let the barbarian sit there without getting attacked, so that his rage ends.
The Githyanki spring to mind as good opponents – they do psychic damage and have a pretty AC to ward off that vicious great axe. Psychic gray oozes are also good, but at 17th level they might be a little weak.

Take advantage of having advantage on attack rolls against him. Do attacks that restrain him, then he'll need to spend an action to break free. He'll have advantage on the attempt if it is strength based. Just have the same creature hold an action to use its restraining attack every time he uses Reckless attack.
If you poison him, he'll have disadvantage on attacks, so Reckless will just be a regular attack for him. Have a rust monster eat his axe. There are also monsters that do bonus damage against unarmored enemies. Intellect Devourers. *shudder*
But it's not like it is terrible that a player that likes to smash things gets to smash things every now and then. Maybe have some dynamic fights where they have to use ballistas to knock Rocs out of the sky before they drop rocks. |

Flying enemies...
or fighting in naval battles or on floating platforms...
Basically anything that prevents such a character from being able to get into melee will beat him. It will force him to rely on his ranged attacks.
Poison works well too.
Traps and puzzles do wonders. Not every challenge should be an enemy that can be knocked down with an axe |
| #7ZardnaarJul 29, 2015 12:26:16 | I doubt most people on these forums have reached level 17 in any class let alone a Barbarian. Poo posting as opposed to playing the game seems to more appealing for them. |
