I know have soe more info for a RL game of D&DN to try out. Hereis the situation I am in. I play D&D with 2 groups atm with a little bit of overlap between the two.

Group 1. Currently playing Castles and Crusades, myself as the DM, tend towards the power gamer types and they know how to min/max to a reasonable extent. 4 or 5 people usually sometimes 3 or 6 depneding on the day.

Group 2. Primarily Pathfinder players with rotating DMs playing the Reign of Winter and Rise of the Rune Lords APs. One of them also DMs a game of 1st ed get to play in and I am playing the Reign of Winter AP as well. 4-7 people turn up (usually 5 or 6)

Group one is my group of players, mostly 3.5 and Pathfinder players as the last 2 AD&D players usually do not play anymore as they can't make it on the nights I can run the games, I can't run the game in the weekend. Group 2 barely played 3.5 and are not very good at char op as such, tend to improvise a lot (even when RAW it won't work),  but tend to have very high rolled ability scores and were not aware of things like wand sof CLW or taking a cleric can be a good idea. No cleric in the Pathfinder or AD&D game.

Group 1 will more or less play anything I serve up, current game is planned to run to around September when one of the players is leaving and going back to the USA and joining the Navy. Group 2 is willing to try 5E but is not willing to give up a normal session of RotRL to do it as I offered a one off session on the 20th of July to try out the new rules but it conflicted with a scheduled session of that AP.

So run a smaller group on a day I can get some people or let players have 2 PCs each maybe?  Getting everyone into a room togather seems to be the problem due to RL not rules issues.

Since group 1 is essentially at your mercy, run 5e for them. Run your regularly scheduled game to its natural/planned conclusion, then switch to 5e for an adventure...... use the intervening months to plot out something, get familiar with the rules, get the group set with the rules, etc.

I would wait for the PHB and DMG if I were you, before converting any of your games to 5e for a try.

Reason is, the PHB and DMG in theory will offer more options and variant rules. You may find more customization in there to fit the 5e system more into the style your group likes to play or is already playing, making migrating to 5e smoother.

For now, maybe the best option would be to run a few sessions of 5e Basic Rules on the side just to see how it goes...

Should be OK to use 3e monsters while we don't have the official 5e stuff yet, I suppose.

Pick their Ability Scores, hit points and damage from 3e... and recalculate their To Hit and saves throwing in some Proficiency Bonuses as you see fit.

At least for most low level monsters it shouldn't be a problem, even if the monster math is somewhat different in each of those editions.

If your group (and you) are enjoying Castles &Crusades and have no issues with it keep playing that. If you're enjoying Rise of the Runelords than keep playing that as well. If you're not enjoying RotRL as much as you expect/hope to enjoy 5th ed than try running a separate game to that.

I'd stick with your current games if I were you. In my experience too many campaigns = no campaign ever gets finished. RotRL will end as will your C&C campaign (that in September). If your having fun then let them come to a natural end. 5th edition will still be there waiting for you.

Level 14 is definitely towards the end. The last book in most Paizo APs can get done in 2 or 3 sessions. By the time the PHB and DMG come out both campaigns should be over and the players available for new ones.
