Sorc Attack Spells

With Twinned Spell being one of the Sorc's most powerful capabilities, and there being such a limited number of spells that can be twinned...basically it needs to not be range self, and must target a single target, and naturally cannot be a concentration spell...what is our optimal spell list here?

 

For first level spells, who would agree that Chromatic Orb is the Sorc's best friend? As far as non twinnable option, shield seems like a good choice, and Mage Armor unless you go Dragonborn Sorc which would seem to be redundant.

 

At 2nd level, the only attack spell that seems to be twinnable is Blindness. 2nd level also naturally has some useful, if not twinnable additional spells.

 

I don't see a 3rd level attack spell at all that can be twinned, though I suppose we could use a higher level version of Chromatic Orb. I think we can twin Dispel Magic. Fireball/ lightning bolt isn't twinnable but still useful to take here for AOE, and Counterspell looks like a good spell to consider as well.

 

At 4th level, Blight seems to be our spell of choice..high damage and twinnable...although Confusion has always been one of my favorite spells. Naturally that is not twinnable.

 

At 5th level, I see no twinnable attack spells. I'll likely either twin a higher level Blight, or go with Cone of Cold if I need area of effect damage.

 

At 6th level the Sorc seems to reach his height with disintegrate which is just ridiculous in the hands of a Sorc.

 

7th and 8th seems to offer the Sorc nothing of great value in terms of attack spells, and we would probably be better off using these slots for higher level disintegrates (better than Finger of Death IMO), although taking teleport is probably a good idea.

 

9th level doesn't offer anything twinnable unless we can use a Wish effect that mirrors a lower level spell that is twinnable. Can we do that?

 

Are there other attack spells that are twinnable that I missed? Are there other spells...perhaps defensive or utilty, that you can and would twin?

Um, you can most certainly twin a concentration spell. It effects 2 targets and both of them are keyed to the same concentration instance like any other multi target concentration spell. This is exactly what makes the ability so powerful for a sorcerer, the ability to twin spells that otherwise are always restricted to one target for everybody else.

 

 

Hold person is excellent as a twinned level 2 spell, though later you can just cast in higher slots for more targets.

 

Haste is great for this as a buff, as are things like stoneskin.

 

All of the bigger control spells like hold and dominate are twinnable, as are the really big attacks like disintegrate.

 

There are lots of options.

I guess I don't get why 1) some in the community think a conc spell cannot be twinned and b) why what those people think hold any weight?  It is self-evident by reading the desctiption in plain English that it twins any spell with a target other than self and that targets a single creature.

 

What am I not reading into the description that "others within the community" are seeing?

I think concentration is also broken when you cast another spell that requires concentration. Technically a twinned spell effect happens at the same time so you hve not cast another concentration spell while the 1st one is still active.

You can read that as the same spell as in "casting a blight spell means the 2nd spell will also be a Blight spell," or you can read it as "the 2nd Blight spell *is* the first Blight spell."

 

How you choose to read that says more about what you want it to say than what the wording is actually saying.
