Im toying with the idea of picking up a few of the old Spelljammer books, however I don't know which ones I should get.  So, I thought I would ask the community.

If i do this, my game would be begining in FR and the PC's would discover a ship and eventually learn how to pilot it and wackyness would ensue.  Oh and I would be using 5e rules.

1) What are the top 5 Spelljammer Source books/box sets?  Please explain why you believe them to be the best.

2) What are the Top 5 Spelljammer adventure Modules?  Please explain why.

Thanks

The boxed set is all you really need. The war captains companion has a lot more ships in it. Not sure about adventure bitd we more or less only used the boxed set.

If you are starting in the Forgotten Realms then the Forgotten Realms Spelljammer Book would be perfect to pick up.

I recall The Complete Spacefarer's Handbook having some useful character options. Also good were the two Spelljammer Monstrous Compendiums because you need lots of wierd new creatures to throw around while people explore strange new realms.

Module wise the two part series Goblin's Return + Heart of the Enemy probably were the best recieved among my players.

The modules you list - Wildspace and Skull and Crossbones - are both part of a loosely linked series, if memory serves. I know that Wildspace is the first one; it involves getting the PCs (assumed to be groundlings) into space.

That seems like a solid list. I’d add the Spelljammer Monstrous Compendium Appendices if you’re feeling up to converting the monsters. It might be some work, but there were a lot of unique and flavorful beasties there.

I honestly don’t recall any of the modules being that compelling, though.

I would love to add the monstrous compendiums, but to be honest im not going to do the conversions.  At this point im just interested in the fluf so that I can run a short 12 to 24 game session tour of Spelljammer.

Ill do some research on Heart of the Enemy and Goblins return.

The warcaptains box set sounds really cool, i may have to check that out as well.

As far as adventures go, are there any of the SpellJammer modules that are light on Dungeon Delving?  I think im looking for more like Space Swashbuckling, Space ship battles, boarding other ships, and setting specific adventure stuff.   Im trying to avoid strict dungeon delving cause it feels like i could do that in any D&D world.

It reasuring that Realmspace seems to be high on everyones lists and I think that makes it a definent buy.

While the War Captains companion and the Monsterous Compendiums sound fantastic Im not sure they would be useable as they are pedominently Mechanics based.

How well would the Mass space ship combat rules in the War Captain Companion work with D&D 5e?

One of the things that I liked about the Rock of Braal was that it actually was not in Realm space but anywhere that the DM wanted to place it.

The Monstrous Compendiums have a lot of unique critters and flavor.  It would take some conversion, but I think it would be worth it.  Your mileage may vary.

War Captains Companion also has some extra types of helms in it so non spellcasters can gain access to Spelljamming technology.

There is no unified Illithod state, empire or faction as such. They do not seem to make pointless war on each other though.
