What do you want to see in the next splat books?

Classes, sub-classes, races, equipment, ect...

1: Warlord.  The battlemaster just feels like a figher MC warlord, much like the Eldrich Knight knight is a fighter MC wizard.  Still need a martial support class.

2: Psion.  With telepath, telekinetic, battlemind, and ardent sub-classes.

3: Revenant.  This could be universal sub-race.  So instead of a wood elf or mountain dwarf, you can be a revenant elf or revenant dwarf.

4: Pixie, Kobold, Mind Flayer and some other monster races.

5: Shaman (4e).  This could possibly be a druid sub-class.  Allowing you to summon spirits instead of wild shape.

6: Puppet Master (nartuo's kankuro): Operates much like a shaman / summoner. Attacks with mechanical proxies.  Could be a rogue sub-class.

Tome of Battle equivalent

Anti-Paladin / Blackguard sub-path for the Paladin

A "true" Warden that transforms into Nature aspects (probably a Druid Sub-path)

Runepriest

Psionics

More setting stuff

Hybrid rules to start off at Class A 1/ Class B 1

Campaign settings, campaign settings, and even more campaign settings. Besides that an equivilant to the complete/powers series, a races series, and monster spotlight books (like the draconomicon or lords of madness). But seriously, campaign settings. Oh and a savage species book. I love me some monster races.

Based on what we've seen so far with splatbooks (the Elemental Evil Adventurer's Handbook) I imagine we're going to see more accessories based around themes and adventures rather than classes. Fewer splatbooks for the sake of splatbooks.

This will make it much, much harder to find a place for some of the more generic subclasses. Elemental Evil will be a great place for an elemental druid or Primordial pact warlock, but it should NOT be the place for something like an enchanter bard.

Having to hunt for content that is not in an obvious location is awkward and should be avoided. That's half of rules bloat.

That said, here are the subclasses I'd *like* to see in future products.

Barbarian

Path of Twin Fury. Two weapons. This needs to be a thing, because it currently doesn't mesh well with the critical buffing feature and barbarians lack the weapon focus of other martial classes while also being feat starved.
Path of the Fetish. Drawing strength from fallen foes. These might be trophies or the consumption of enemy's hearts.
Path of the Blood Mage. The equivalent of the arcane trickster or eldritch knight, adding some sorcerer to the barbarian.

Bard

College of Manipulator. The bard that fascinates and charms opponents. The enchanter build.
College of Trickery. The illusionist/summoner build, possibly working with shadowstuff to conjure creatures or generate phantasms.
College of Respite. The buffing bard, who makes everyone better, and has spells focused around aiding the party.

Cleric

I don't see the need for many new cleric builds. Most gods seem to be covered, and adding new subclasses/domains just means having to retcon the list of gods in the PHB, which should be avoided.
That said, there are a few small gaps in god portfolios. I think elements might be handy: Fire Domain, Water Domain (with cold), and Earth Domain, since we already have Tempest covered. There's a lot of historical deities tied to the elements, so this makes sense; not all fire gods work as sun/light gods. For example, the lack of a domain appropriate to smiths means Moradin and Reorx are gods of knowledge, which is weird.

Druid

Circle of the Beast. This is pretty obvious and a glaring omission, especially as all the druid art includes an animal companion. Give them an animal companion, the ability to talk to animals, and summon minor animals (even if non-combatants).

Circle of the Elements. Almost as obvious. A druid tied to the four elements. An Avatar if you will.
Circle of the Spirit. The shaman type character that deals with the spirit world, fey, and the like. They might be able to talk to spirits, summon spirits, interact with other planes, etc.

Fighter

Battlemind. When we get psionics, the psion equivalent of the eldritch knight would be cool. And the name works better than "psychic warrior".

I don't think we need many new subclasses at the moment since the fighter is defined by its mechanics: simple or complex. More maneuvers are all that are needed, but finding a place for those would be cool.
It'd be neat to have some more tanking, some mounted combat, and the like.

Monk

Way of the Drunken Boxer. Lots of bobbing and weaving, erratic movement, with tricks like breathing fire or resisting damage. Because it's fun.

Way of the Raised Staff. The monk that relies on monastic weaponry, especially two-handed ones like the quarterstaff, spear, monk's spade, etc. Maybe throw in some improvised weapon bonuses as well, for the Jackie Chan type character that fights with whatever's handy.

Paladin

Oath of Freedom. Anti-slavery and chaotic paladin, although balancing keeping an oath with being non-lawful is kinda funky.

Ranger

Trapper. The ranger that is good at making tracks, ambushes, hiding, and the like. Possibly with some skill use, dipping into bard/rogue territory.

Delver. Instead of focusing on the aboveground, this ranger is all about the Underdark and dungeons.
To expand the ranger I'd really like to see more spells that are not spells. Spells they can take that can be flavoured as mundane abilities. Or a subclass ability that lets them burn a spell to recharge an ability, like the paladin's smite.

Rogue

Conman. The Charisma-based rogue that is less about robbery or murder and more about social skills such as deception, trickery, and bluff. They might be able to hand off their sneak attack to an ally and otherwise buff the party without directly making with the stabbity stabbity.

Investigator. Like the above, the subclass that is about assisting and less about the old ultraviolence.

Sorcerer

Fey Bloodline. If any ancestry would convey innate magical powers, it would be faeries

Primal Sorcery. Lots of elemental effects and powers. Works nicely for Dragonlance as well.

Warlock

Draconic Pact. Strike a deal with a dragon and become infused with its essence.

Primordial Pact. Making a deal with the anti-gods. Another dash of elements. Alternatively, this could be the "genie pact".

Wizard

We don't need any more wizard schools. Like the cleric they have enough love.

But, honestly, the splatbooks I want are really comprehensive and art-filled versions of classic books.

I'd like one or two player splatbooks a year tops. Really, with how small subclasses are, one big book could satisfy me content-wise.

I'd like a done-in-one Psionics Handbook, with subclasses, monsters, and items. Possibly with a couple different takes on psionics, and some suggestions for reflavouring.

I'd like an awesome version of the Manual of the Planes. Something that takes cues from the Monster Manual and drips story and has lots of details on all the planes.

And a big Deities & Demigods that expands on all the goods with flavour and detail would be nice. But they can wait a couple years on that, to incorporate new domains.

I'd like some generic expansions, like the Dungeoneer's Handbook and Wilderness Survival Guide. But those could be paired with adventure/ story arcs (the mega-dungeon and the exploration APs).

Ravenloft stuff.

Maybe a few more subclasses.

Magical crafting. Seriously...a book of complex recipes for making all sorts of magical items.

Big Book of Backgrounds.

Warlord in a *book all it's own, so that I won't miss out on anything good when I don't buy it.

And a dedicated psionics *book so that I can read it and admire the shinies, but not actually use it.

Agreed on campaign settings.  I could even see Manual of the Planes as a campaign setting.  Also, as has been discussed in a different thread, I'd love to see organization or monster-themed splatbooks.  4E Open Grave, for example, was a splatbook about the undead.  Heroes of the Feywild, was essentially a splatbook about the fey.  How about a splatbook about orcs, or the Zhentarim, or the Cult of the Dragon, or githyanki, or giants, or...

You get it

I'd like Eberron, Greyhawk and Dragonlance campaign settings!

Also Arm & Equipment  containing additional gears, weapons and armors, including exotic ones, as well as those of racial make or made of unusual material!

A Tome of Magic containing additional backgrounds, magic items, spells, and alternate  innate spellcasting techniques such as psionic.

A Tome ob Battle containing additional backgrounds, fighting techniques, maneuvers, feats and other tricks for martial characters.

I personaly would like to see themed books.

along the lines of the lines of the series of 3.5 books that included Sandstorm,Stormwrack and frostburn.

such a book would include the following ( using frostburn as a reference)

- cold climate races and subrace options

- backgrounds suited for cold climates.

- subclass options focused on cold climates

- feats focussed on cold climates

- optional rules for cold climate survival.

- equipment focused on it's use in cold climates things like dog sleds and now boots

- cold climate monsters and templates to make cold climate versions of existing creatures.

- a guide where thse cold climates could exist in campaign settings.

- a guide to making a cold/ice age campaign world

A really awesome Psionicist like 2e's: that has its own unique flavor and mechanics, highly thematic with unique powers that really feel like playing a mind-based character.

In other words, not just some wizard-ripoff with slightly different casting system and powers that look like no more than re-fluffed wizard spells... as we had in the last two editions of the game.

A point buy based guide to creating races, feats, spells, and monsters. Of course due to any unforseen balance issues when mixing and matching attributes, this should be considered a living document, and none of the content should be allowed in formal Adventure League play. This would be for home games only and could serve as a sort of guide on how to balance homebrew content, or directly used to make home brew content.

More Feats, spells, and magic tiems.

Prestige Classes, Paragon Paths, or some similar form of alternative/advanced class system.

Classless, levelless, and point buy options.

Some sort of alternate initial class system, I'm thinking of Player's Option: Skills and Powers style granulated options within each class.

Options for extra high level play, to level 30 or higher.

I really just want more of everything. Races, classes, items, spells, monsters, etc.

Psionics. And with this, I would love something different. 4e refluffed a lot of spells, but at least added a power point mechanic. All the buzz says we're getting a point-beased optional spell mechanic in the DMG. Some psionic powers are like spells, sure, but some are (and should be) unique to psionics.

Settings. (Plus, a new setting. Just for 5e.) I'd prefer setting books to be edition neutral, ie: all about the setting itself. Maps, politics, history, art...

Another decent video game, dammit! It still grinds my gears that 4e didn't get a video game.

1 fat book a year, the same size as the PHB. 1/3 Monsters, 1/3 Class material and spells, 1/3 Setting and DM material and magic items.

And at the very back, all the accumulated errata to date.

Full book to be released as a PDF, each of the three sections to be released as a separate smaller PDF (at slightly more than 1/3 the price of the full book) for people who only want part of it.

I honestly want very few splat books. I am a multi edition player and I wan't very little in terms of splat books for 5E. For me the game is fantastic with what comes from just the PHB. What I wan is some older settings like Birthright or Planescape to make a return. Heck, even the return of box sets for campaign settings.

I'd love to see a series of edition specific one-shots.  In the midst of the current edition, revisit previous games with some new material (designed for that system).  For 2e, a Planescape module; for 3e, an Eberron boxed set; for 4e, a History of the Dawn War Gazetteer; something like that.  Anyone remember 'Campaign Classics', an annual feature from the print Dragon Magazine? That's sorta what I'm imagining.

If the next AP is elemental, then I figure undead, demons, and drow/underdark will probably be the next three.  It seems like those areas would provide a lot of new races, subclasses, and monsters.

Also campaign settings.  One every six months would be digestable.

#44

Joe_the_Rat

Setting books.  Given their emphasis on tying characters to the game (ideals, flaws, bonds), Settings are a good place to add more of everything (classes, subclasses, races, backgrounds) outside of the Core - particularly when they are part of what gives the setting its flavor.  Knight of Solamnia, Defiler, Artificer, Way of the Scarlet Brotherhood. The elements of character that really scream "I'm from this setting."  Monsters unique to those milieu. Provide the abundance of options that players crave, but manage splatglut by suggesting options are (by default) exclusive to particular settings.  Then you add Spelljammer and Planescape so all of that careful sorting can go to hell.

Add-on rule sets. Psionics is general enough that it needs "core" content coverage.  Environment books and rules (at least the universals. Not all Underdarks are created equal).

#45

Hebitsuikaza

Sep 22, 2014 15:39:33

Well, since races weren't presented in the Monster Manual, it would be good to have official stats for races that are staples to pretty much all settings.

Kobolds, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Orcs, Gnolls, Bugbears, Ogres, Lizardfolk, Troglodytes, Minotaurs...

And definitely a replacement for Warlord. With a better name. But the same "Princess/Tactician/Cheerleader" type concept rolled into a class that is basically like a simplified streamlined Cleric without the god or turn undead and recharging features replacing spellcasting part.

I would like a Oriental Adventures 5th Ed. A "western wuxia" is possible, for example Hercules (played by Kevin Smith) could be a "wester monk". The famous teenage mutant turtles are "western ninjas", like Shadow and Snake Eyes from G.I.Joe.

I imagine Samurai and Ninja with ki maneuvers, the "powers" from "Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords". Crusader would be ki + divine, with a more offensive style than paladin.

My idea for wu jen is a hybrid spellcaster, arcane and subclasses for different power sources (divine, primal, psionic, ki), and the shugenja would be the elemental version of the mystery shadowmancer from 3.5 "Tome of Magic".

I wish a Savages Species because I love monster/racial traits. I also love the template classes (half-dragon, half-fay, half-celestial).

I imagine the vestiges of pacts warlocks like "prestige class" you could change everyday like clothing.

IMO Samarui would make better paladins.  With an oath to a house.

Yes, it's not "historic", but paladins and bards didn't exactly run around and cast spells either.

But i don't suppose we could get back on topic.
