Had a great time playing Tyranny of Dragons.  Our party was made up of a Human Monk, Gnome Wizard (abjurer), Human Paladin (Devotion), Dwarf Cleric, and Half Elf Sorcerer (Dragon bloodline).  We had a blast and a great time.  Really enjoyed the adventure.  We were all killed by Tiamat.  I think the DM said we had her down to 230 hp.  We failed on the mission to Thay, noy sure how much that contributed, our party could not pass those persuasion checks.  I burned through most of my spells just getting to Tiamat.  We never hot her to use up all her legendary resistances.  I could not maintain concentration on any spell.  Oh well.  But it was a good death.  If I'm going to die, I want to say "I was killed by Tiamat".  Looking forward to starting Rage of Demons.  I think I will play a Human Barbarian with the sentinel feat and wolf totem for that one.

Maybe you can add "I was killed by Orcus" to your resume as well!

we had something like 8-12 people at the time, counting thralls and whatnot. We won, most of us were killed, but a few lived. I killed the wizards familiar, killed the wizard, and scratched tiamat before i went down, and the crazy rogue with insanity levels of saving throws worked with the fighter during their action surge to bring her down. The druids and clerics came around and we were all brought back, except for the fighter who fell into the pit as Tiamat's body sank back into the lower planes. That's ok though, we have a Warlock with Planeshift and planned on fetching him.

Our DM wouldn't let us level to 15th before the fight - he figured we would be too powerful if we did, so we were all level locked to 14th and less. We also weren't allowed to wait until Tiamat emerged from the Volcanic mountainous area, because too many of us had insane attack ranges and it wouldn't have been as interesting a fight. Also, the NPCs who pledged to help us in the fight went off and did something else, apparently because that would have made the fight too easy.

I'm glad you had a good time ^^

Tiamat really ought not be faught by less than 64 levels, and if you are below 15th, I would recommend closer to 120 total levels, otherwise it's largely suicidal.

Did you fight her in her diminished, or normal state?

Seriously, if you’re going to go, getting killed by Tiamat is just about as legendary as you can get.

I think I love this thread.

What was your character's name, and which was he (of the race/classes you listed)? He needs a memorial!

Hats off to Seja Zenn, he met his end in the most heroic of fashions—killed by Tiamat, lesser goddess and greater bitch. May his name be remember in the annals of time!

So you failed to take out half of the Red Wizard or bring Severin out of his area within 10 rounds.

I've seen Tiamat's stat block. (I DM for my group so I am allowed to peak at things). She's CR 30 at full strength. Not sure why a moduled would include pitting 14th/15th level PCs against her. Then again, based on checking against the DMG for a party of 4, I found many encounters in the first part (Horse of the Dragon Queen) to be off kilter so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. And I suppose something called Rise of Tiamat has to deliver a potential battle with Tiamat.

True confession time: If it had been up to me, Tiamat's stats wouldn't have been in the adventure. Either you stop her before she claws her way up from Hell and win, or you don't stop her and she obliterates everything in her path before ushering in the New Dark Age of Dragons. But I'm harsh that way. Savvier heads prevailed and the stats were included, with provisos that ought to yield about the same catastrophic result if characters haven't weakened her substantially before she pounces. I think it was the right call.
