Where is the 5e SRD? I can only find the Basic Rules but it is missing much content and isn't neatly linked.

No such thing exists.

It is possible no such thing WILL exist, depending on how the digital tools being developed turn out.

On the bright side, you can stop looking!

By offering the basic game for free, they've largely side-stepped the need for an SRD. They retain ownership and can be selective about the licensing. Interesting move. Better than what they did with 4E

I'd love to have a site with all the rules hyperlinked and such. Especially the spell lists.

I'm pretty sure that the hypertext SRD wasn't actually an official product. I'm pretty sure it was produced under the OGL by fans.

Well, I don't care who makes it, but a linked SRD is a must in this day and age.

"Well, I don't care who makes it, but a linked SRD is a must in this day and age."

How much do you think they should charge for that? One time purchase, or subscription based?

"None. It should be free as it was in 3e."

There are a lot of people who believe that, in retrospect, that decision was the first in a chain of economically disastrous  choices for D&D. I personally do not think what you are asking for is going to be available as a completely free stand alone product.

Their loss leader product is the free basic rules. However, as an aside, there is more content coming to those free rules, right up until just after the release of the DMG.

At the time of the release of 3rd edition WotC correctly concluded that they were the dominant player on the table top rpg market. In such a position the best way to earn more money is to grow the market, even if this means helping competitors. The SRD and OGL accomplised exactly this and WotC flourished along with the rest of the market.

At the time of the release of 5th edition WotC is no longer a dominant player, so dont expect any freebies this time around.

IMHO the OGL was a very smart marketing move at the timd. Abandoning it was greedy and stupid. But the market has changed now, and WotC will probably settle for a simpler competitive marketing strategy for 5th. Hence no SDR and no full release under OGL.

If you want the rules (beyond the basic rules) just to peruse them, someone out there has scanned the 5e Player's Handbook and mashed together a pdf and shared a torrent of it.

So it's legally downloadable in some areas of the world, though whoever is hosting it may very well be breaking the law.

Alternatively, you could borrow a copy from a friend or read it by hanging out in an LGS.

The above responses assume that you don't want to outlay funds for it yet. Of course, you could also just purchase it.

If you're wanting to develop 3rd party content for it, you'll likely have to obtain Wizard's permission to do so and most likely pay for licensing rights.

You're engaging in a strawman here. I never said I was talking about the core games, I am very clearly explicitly talking about the Hardcover books/expansions.

It really doesn't help WOTC's business when they go look we have this super inconvenient non hyperlinked pdf. when their biggest competitor is going: Here have all the rules/expansions for free completely updated and conveniently linked.

It doesn't matter if Paizo is being forced to do have the SRD.

Edit: I'm replying to mistwell here. realized I forgot to hit quote

It sounds very much like WotC is going the app route rather than the website.

This is a handy idea, one even Paizo has not done, as their PFRD is online only. Meaning if you lose internet access (at work, on a plane, cable goes out, power failure, etc) you lose the SRD. But with an app you should be able to access the rules so long as you have the device. And, presumably, there with be a desktop or webbased iteration of the app.

Of course, the problem is this takes time so it was not ready for launch.

All I'm hearing is "I want content for free."  That's not how business works and it's not how you should expect it to work.

WotC  is giving away Basic D&D for free and still people act like somehow they're getting screwed over by The Man. No good deed goes unpunished.

The point is, a linked SRD of sorts is coming.  It's called Dungeonscape

And you will pay for it, or you will look up the rules in your free Basic Rules pdfs or you will use the rulebooks you bought and paid for.

4e's Compendium was behind a paywall too.  And it was far superior to the SRD of 3.5e, for good reason.  Dungeonscape is going to be many steps beyond 4e's Compendium, too.

This is content people are willing to pay for.

WotC are using a different business model now.

They are allowed to, aren't they?

Alot of entitlement going around these days.  I personally think people who download illegally she be electrocuted, or at least sent to prison for life... with no internet.

Dungeonscape won't be a rental model. You buy content on your account (what's in the basic rules PDF's will be free in Dungeonscape, and that is the core of WotC's 5e SRD as it contains the rules to play the game, a core of monsters, and a core of races and classes. Even the races not in the basic rules are considered "non-core" in the PHB). They may likely have a more true SRD available later on that covers what elements are allowed to be used by 3pp to make content but recall that with 3.x the SRD specified (at least originally) that you couldn't reprint monster stats or any other established content, requiring the players to get that information from the WotC books. Some of this of course could be gotten around by making variants of classes and races and monsters so that you could print out that information separately. The SRD wasn't a full listing (I recall that beholders and a few other truly iconic/original D&D monsters weren't included) of everything in the game, just a list of what 3pp could reference when making their own products.
