Start Character Backgrounds in LMoP

Just one a quick question - The Starter Set Characters have backgrounds written into them that fit into the LMoP story. However some of the details in the backgrounds are never brought up in the actual adventure module. Do I have to improvise them or can I find something written about them somewhere?

For example it is said that rogue has been set up by someone. I'm currently looking for information who that was and why he did that and where the rogue can find him.

I have a few ideas like the one who set him up wanted the promotion that the rogue was going to get to get into the inner circle of the Redbrands and he can be found in that one pub (he's the one who always runs away). Maybe if the rogue finds him he will ask him for a 1on1 duel.

Is that fine or does that conflict with later information? If there is any official information I'd rather use that than my made-up stuff.

My suggestion is don't solve things right away. If their background stories are wrapped by level 5 you lose a lot of potential plot hooks for later on. Throw him some clues and/or a related item to solve/defeat but keep the background story going as long as it makes sense to the story.

There is no "official" information that I can recall with regard to who in the Redbrands set up the rogue PC. I would suggest you just tell the player, "If and when you see the Redbrand who set you up, tell us." During play, the player can then say "It's that guy (or gal) right there!" when inspired by the events that are unfolding. You can then play that Redbrand appropriately.

I don't remember offhand what other backgrounds contained information that was left vague like this.

When I ran the adventure, I made it so it was Glasstaff who'd set up the rogue.  I had it that the Redbrands were originally a petty thieves group, but Glasstaff wanted to turn them into more of an organised crime gang. The rogue was one of the last holdouts, so Glasstaff tried to have him murdered.

I think (based on no evidence whatsoever, just hunch) that a few dangling hooks were left for the new players to have a chance to invent part of their character's backstory.

@pukunui

The background however reads "You want to get revenge on Glasstaff and the guy who set you up", indicating that those are two different persons.

@iserith

You'd let the player decide? I could do that but my player playing the rogue currently tries to knock out a Redbrand to interogate him who set him up, so he basically decided to roleplay that he needs to find it out first. I mean I could ask him OOC what I should answer him, but I think it might be more fun for him if I actually give him a hint.

Also, thanks, good to know that the backgrounds won't be brought up in the module itself, that means I can freely improvise without worrying too much about it.
