I received my 5th Ed PHB in the mail yesterday, so far I am pleased with the rules. I have been playing DnD on and off since 1978. But when I think back at the class’s that I played, I mostly played in the following order: Wizard, Ranger, and Fighter (some rare times a Cleric). I seemed to be in a Class rut! Well with the new edition I should try something different, so far the Bard, and rouge sound good.
What class’s do you find fun to play?
Sorceror if you want a change but aren't willing to get weird.
Otherwise Barbarian, as metal as possible.
I've played Monks and Rogues mostly.
If I do ever get the chance to play instead of being DM, I want to play a Battle Master and an Arcane Trickster.
EDIT: Also very interested in a Warlock with a Great Old One patron, with the Pact of the Blade.
I want to inject some Lovecraftian horror into a character.
I've always had a thing for Paladins, but never played one because I couldn't get into the mechanics. 4E's Avenger class did it for me, and I played Avengers like unarmored Paladins. So, my first 5E PC? A Paladin using a homebrewed version of Unarmored Defense. Maybe I'm in a rut, and just haven't gotten sick of it yet. ;)
I was never interested in the Warlock, previously, but the 5E Warlock is freaking amazing. I will definitely be playing one at some point in the future, even if it means reflavoring the pact, a bit. I helped a friend with an Eberron PC concept, and we came up with a woman altered by the Day of Mourning, who started developing arcane powers seemingly overnight. We looked at both the Sorceror and Warlock, and went with the Warlock for it's ridiculously fun looking options. I'm as excited about her character as I am mine.
historically i've steered clear of the casting classes mainly cuz i hate the vancian model. however, with 5e's liberalization of spell slot usage, i'd be very interested in playing a bard, or indeed just about any class.
My favorite class ever since I started with the original Red Box (and through 2E) has been thief/rogue. I've played the occasional fighter and enjoyed it a lot.
However, it's been years since I've actually played as a PC. I've only DM'd now for quite some time, but I do make full blown characters from the rules for some of my NPCs. I've lately been sticking to rogues (of course) and wizards, but I'm planning to start branching out into some of the non-core classes for NPCs soon.
Paladins were my favorite class in 2e and 3e. Whenever a DM allowed it (and some didn't) or at least if didn't try to discourage the class (usually thru Gotch!) (and some did). Whenever possible, paladins were my preferred class. I wonder if some DMs thought I was looking to stir up trouble with a LG 'do-gooder'. I just enjoyed being the cheerleader 
, helping others wherever needed while still being able to hold my own in a fight

In 4e, the warlord class gave me a similar thrill (another glorified cheerleader --at least as I played him). My longest running PC ever was a tiefling warlord named Tyranny (or Tyr). Oh, and he was unaligned . . . definately not a do-gooder

With 5e, I'm most excited about the return of Vancian casting. My first PC will be a tiefling wizard named Azruel. Ya know, I may have a thing for tieflings .
I like Fighters, Clerics, and Paladins. I also love Dwarves. My first non pre gen P.C. for 5e is a Dwarvish Cleric of Clanggeddin. (War domain).
Oh no, not a War Domain....
I haven't played in the Realms since 2nd ed. Should be fun. I hope the Lord of Twin axes is still alive.

I've come to realize over the years that i really like it when i can make a character that has at least a few solid at-will abilities that are interesting, useful and somewhat unique, in contrast to classical vancian where everything is fire and forget on a limited budget. I've always hated vancian magic but i would rock a druid or an artificer because i could find ways to work around spell slots and get crazy monster abilities all day long or multiple persisant spells for the day. With the 5e warlock, i get daily spells but i also look forward to being able to levitate, disguise self and meld with shadows any time i like as at-will powers.

Browsing the PHB gave me a LOT of character ideas:
Human Barbarian, Path of the Totem Warrior. Basically, Tarzan.
Half Elf Bard, College of Valor. I've always, always, always hated bards. But the 5E version looks great and I have a killer concept for a character with a magical voice not unlike Jesse Custer from "Preacher".
Warforged Tempest Cleric reflavored as an arcane warrior/swordmage/gish. Not as resilient as an Eldritch Knight but more spellcasting and flexibility.
Battle Master Fighter. I don't really have a character concept, I just want to play one. I know some have bagged on this subclass for not having enough superiority dice but it still looks like a lot of fun to me.
Eldritch Knight Fighter. Because.
Changeling Monk, Way of the Shadow. Throw in the criminal background and you've got an amazing shapeshifting assassin and thief.
Paladin. Both the Devotion and Vengeance oaths look great. I still think the Ancients oath would have been better as a ranger subclass.
Halfling Rogue Thief. The pregen from the Starter Set was perfection.
Sorcerer. I kind of think some of the wizard schools would work better as sorcerer bloodlines. For example, the necromancer is a niche subclass with a really strong flavor. To truly be successful, I think it needs a narrow but potent spell list...which is kind of what the sorcerer has. So I'd like to try to make a sorcerer necromancer.
Warlock, Pact of the Blade. Either the Fiend (for burning hands and fireball) or the Great Old One (for Jedi mind tricks).
