Tasha's Hideous Laughter

Hi all,

In case you didn't read my recap, a rather amusing thing happened during the last session of my Legacy of the Crystal Shard campaign. The PCs found themselves facing not only a seemingly unbeatable witch but also the gargantuan skeletal remains of the fabled great white wyrm Icingdeath! The looks of resignation on their faces when they realized they had little hope of succeeding were almost heartbreaking.

Then one player had an idea. He decided to have his bard PC cast Tasha's Hideous Laughter on the skeletal dragon. The only limitation on the spell is that the target must have an Intelligence of at least 5 in order for it to work. Skeletons aren't immune to enchantments, and this particular skeleton happened to have an Intelligence of 6. So down the mighty dragon's bones went, shaking silently with mirth!

Luckily for the PCs, the skeleton had a Wisdom score of 10 as well, and I consistently failed its saves to end the effect. Not only that, but I also forgot to have the PC who'd cast the spell make Constitution checks to maintain his concentration when he took damage in subsequent rounds.

I think the skeletal dragon got one tail swat in, which contributed to the death of a PC, but after that it spent the rest of the fight laughing. (For the record, the main reason the PC died was because none of the other PCs went to her aid while she proceeded to fail three death saves in a row.)

Suddenly things were looking a lot brighter for the PCs, though the witch still seemed fairly unstoppable. Finally, though, she made a fatal mistake by standing too close to the edge of a crevice. The fighter PC, who had been forced to drop her sword after the witch had cast chill metal on it, decided to shove her off the edge. I rolled a natural 1 on the witch's check to resist and down she went!

At first I thought it was a bit weird that a skeleton could be affected by something like Tasha's Hideous Laughter but in retrospect, it made for a totally memorable and epic session. The players went from looking absolutely demoralized to being relieved and possibly even elated. It was very much a "snatching victory from the jaws of defeat" moment.

Just wanted to share.

Cheers,

Jonathan

It does seem odd for a first level spell considering similar higher level spells are resistant to charm. I imagine that will get errated, but I'm with you about erring on the side of fun. That spell and glitterdust are two of my favorite spells in 2e.

Also, I have an evil archfey called Dendan that was corrupted by the Far Realm. His cultist (cleric/bards cultist yay) always have Otto’s Irresistible Dance and other spells that revolve around dancing singing, and such. They are just fun spells.
