is it legal to send this PDF to one of those sites that will print it out and bind it into book form? if so is there any way I can obtain permission to do so? Ive been paying D&D since the early 80s and find using a printed book easier at the table, It is just my prefrence thanks for your time.

Do you really think WoTC would have released a printer friendly version of the basic rules if you couldn't print it? I'm not a copyright expert, but I believe there's something called "Fair Use" in US laws that allows you to reproduce documents for your personal use. Sending it to a printer is not any different than going into one of those photocopy places to print it yourself.

Short answer: Yes.

With that being said, the cost of sending this to the printer would easily be in the 20-30$ range, if not more..... Its more cost effective to simply purchase the PHB, which comes with more content, is hardbound, and comes with full color art.

You could print it, but wotc probably won't give you express permission to do so.

Wait until the new version of the Basic D&D pdf is released in a week or two before printing!

I guarantee that the backlash if they were to take legal action against a fan printing the Printer Friendly version of the Basic Rules would cost them both money and reputation.

It still would have been nice if they gave written authorization to print it, which I haven’t been able to find.

I'm pretty sure if you're printing it for your own use and not selling or otherwise distributing printed copies, then you're in the clear.  That said, as others have pointed out, paying for a printed version of the Basic Rules is probably not your best bet, especially not at this juncture.

I'm waiting for someone to put up a hypertext version of it, myself

When the basic rules were available on lulu.com for POD I ordered a copy and it only cost $8 for printing, binding and shipping.  I will probably get a new copy when the complete basic game is available (when it gets to version 1.0). I assume it will be around the same price.

The current copy makes a nice basic players guide. It looks really nice too.

I'm waiting for the full one to be released as well.

As for the legality of the printing, you are allowed to change the format of any document you own, including printing PDFs, copying CDs onto an MP3 player, or even scanning a book. If you downloaded the document yourself, you are the owner of that copy, and thus it is legal to print. If WotC wanted to limit our rights in any way there would be a licence or user agreement that required signing.

I'm assuming the basic pdf update will release in four days, this Friday the 8th based on their release of the previous basic pdf on the same early date the Starter Set released. I could be wrong. I just thought it would be a shame for people to print out the basic pdf a few days before it gets updated. If you have a game this Saturday you could use the first version of the basic pdf just fine. Or you could try printing out the new version right before your session, assuming it releases Friday. Also, the new info is likely to be mostly monster and DM info, so not essential for your players to have access to. My initial comments were largely based on the thought that people were going to spend some money to print the first draft of the basic pdf. In which case I stand by my original advice to wait until after the new update gets released shortly.
