The D&D Addiction

In another thread I revealed how much time I spend playing D&D. Most weeks we try for a 4-6 hour session and on those days where everyone is available we try and get a Sunday session in as well which is usually from around 1-2pm to whenever often 10:30pm.

None of us have kids though and we all have jobs apart from 1 player who is usally a student but has recently graduated.

I am more or less running a sandbox type game and seeing where it goes. There is no big metaplot there is no BBEG. I have been using the Quests of Doom book to run adventures and I have been linking them togather and developing a world based on the PCs actions. For example the PCs aquired a vineyard in one of the adventures and later directly worked for the Duke and saved the duchy. Since they had land anyway one of the PCs was promoted to being a Baron at level 8. The adventures I have run so far.

Bad Moon Rising (werewolves)

The Noble Rot (Jubilex the Slime Lord, showdown in said winery)

Death in Dyrglass (lycanthropes, more lycanthropes in an elemental infested ruined temple).

Irteps Dish (PCs get shrunk to microscopic size)

The Dead from Above (flying cloud giant citidel bombing human lands)

Hidden Oasis (currently playing Egyptian themed)

My pantheon is basically the Greyhawk one with a few imports such as Vanya from BECMI Mystara setting and Zehir from 4E. For generic NPCs I usually roll a random personality and appearence on the spot (comliness from 1E basically).

Tiamat, Vecna, Orcus, Jublilex are all around. Lolth exists but she is so rare no one has heard of her. I have also set the current game after the other one so the PCs actions form that game have been carried forward and have been tied into some of the adventures I have run. Drow exist but are so rare they are banned form being a PC race and a renegade Drow would be either dead or having to hide in the shadows.

Much like Game of Thrones I also have drawn inspiration from real life. In the current adventure I added the Egyptian Pantheon to my game. Due to my other addictions like Europa Unversalis IV and Crusader Kings II things like holy wars, crusades, political marriages, vassals and imperialism have also been used. One PC has been made a baron and sworn vassalage to a Duke, another one is working on convincing his son to marry her due to male preference succession laws. Game of Thrones has drawn on the War of the Roses and Hadrians Wall (house Lannister/House Lancaster). I have been reading up on African states in the Sahel, the Holy Roman Empire, Venice, Byzantium, and the Teutonic Order.

My prep time on average is probably around half an hour although I normally print off several adventures and spend time reading them while doing other things like watching the TV.

Turns out my online gaming group also plays D&D so I may run a game for them. Only 1-2 of them played TSR D&D years ago and by D&D they mean Pathfinder or 5E as they see PF as 3.5 and 5E as the new D&D and they use roll d20 or whatever it is to play online.

Man I wish I could crush that much d&d in a week. My groups are having trouble getting monthly meetups to work out.
