My session on Thursday night was a great session and it pobably ranks up there with a few of my best efforts over the last few years. We had 5/6 players show up and I ran a conversiopn of the War of the Wielded adventure from Dungeon 149. The adventure was set in Sasserine and the hook/plot revolved around 2 extinct factions whose intelligent weapons out lived them. INn3.5 terms my PCs ended up destroying oover a million gold pieces worth of items due to siad items forcing the PCs to do what thye wanted. I tweaked the NPC Knight found in the DM Basic PDF into these.

Cabanite Imperativa (Duelist) CR3

Neutral Humans

Armor Class 15 (studded leather)

Hit Points 52 (8d8 + 16)

Speed 30 ft.

STR 9 DEX 17 CON 14 ,INT 13 WIS 12 CHA 14

Skills. Persuasion +4, Stealth +5,

Saving Throws Dexterity+5, Wis +3

Senses passive Perception 11

Languages any one language (usually Common)

Challenge 3 (700 XP)

Slippery mind. The Duelist has advantage on saving throws against enchantment spells.

Actions

Multiattack. The duelist makes two melee attacks.

Rapier. rapier: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8+ 3) slashing damage.

Dagger. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 20/60 ft, one target. Hit: 5 (1d4+3) piercing damage.

Reactions

Parry. As a reaction the Duelist can grant disadvantage against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, the duelist must see the attacker and be wielding a melee weapon.

At 2100 xp for 3 of them they were just short of the 2500 xp for a deadly encounter although if the numbers multiplier was used they clocked in at 4200xp.

To make the fight a little tougher because 4200 xp may not be enough I equipped them with an intelligent magic item each and the fight took place in a steam bath area with scantily clad women who had theweapons hidden in towels and under the water (DC 25 perception checks) and the steam could be used to hide in. The PCs won but 2 of them were down and the others were hurt bad. Each of the ladies had the following item.

The Dutchessas Thaluna, Fhalu, Asidra

The Dutchessas are +1 returning daggers of venom that contain the souls of three human women. The Dutchessas appear as matt black daggers and pulse with a heartbeat when held. When they inflict damage in combat they can be used to poison the victim. They hold up to 5 doses of poison and any poison used with them has the saving throw DC increased by 2. If thrown in combat they return to the wielders hand and can be used again in the same round if the wielder has multiple attacks.

Although called the Dutchessas only Thaluna was a noblewomen, Fhalu was an assassin for hire and Asidra has the soul of a lady of the night who used to murder her clients. Thaluna puts on airs, Fhalu is quiet and sombre while Asidra likes telling off colour jokes and talking about herprofessional exploits in graphic detail. They fell in with the Cabanite thieves’ guild centuries ago and transferred their souls to the daggers in order to continue the feud with the Oquon thieves guild. Both guilds are now long gone but intelligent weapons have kept the feud going for around 400 years.

Alignment CE, Int 10, wis 14, Cha 10, speech and hearing, 120’ vision and hearing, Saves Int +2, Wis +4, Cha +4, Ego 12.

Lesser Powers: Bane 3/day DC 12 cha save.

The ego score is the DC on the cha save to avoid a conflict of interet between the dagger and whoever is wielding it.

By "Dutchessa", do you mean a woman ruler of a duchy? If so, I believe that is a "duchess" plural being "duchesses".
