The Elemental Evil Player's Companion is up on DriveThruRPG now.

http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/145542/Elemental-Evil-Players-Companion-5e

It has a number of races and new spells. Two of the races will work for Dark Sun (Aarakocra and Goliath).

I was hoping for a elemental subclass of preist, but it has a nice list of new elemental spells.

I'm glad to see beast bond.  That helps the beastmaster a good bit (telepathy and advantage)

Still need a revivify beast.

Meh, I was a fan of the Fiend Folio style Aaracokra, with hands on their wings. It was different, and different is cool! (At least, until everybody else does it... then it's mainstream).

So happy to have Genasi again.

Aaracokras are cool, I am happy for their return... but what about avariels (winged elves) and raptorans (the new PC from "Races of Wild").

* About genasies... I imagine them like humanoids with genies ancestors.

Let's see, races with permanent flight at-will, a bunch of new spells for caster classes, and absolutely nothing for noncasters.

I think this is a splatbook I cna safely ignore.

I was hoping to see Elemental Pact warlocks, Elemental Bloodline Sorcerers, and Elemental Domains for Clerics.  There's a lot that can be done - hopefully they'll be in the actual book.  Genasi showing up is kind of cool though.

I wonder if that's how they are going to progress.

Instead of racial levels, you have racial feats.

i.e.

pixie

+2 Dex, +1 Cha

tiny, flys

pixie feat:

You can cast the following spells.  Sleep, polymorph, ect...

mind flayer:

+2 Int, +1 Cha

telepathic

mind flayer feat:

You cast the following spells.  Mind blast...

Advanced mind flayer feat:

You can eat people's brains and turn them into your pets.

Hmmm... yea.  I think i like that better the losing class levels.

Observations

1) You can get it on the Wizards website

2) Zero Cleric or Paladin spells? That seems an odd omission.

3) Races and spells are cool, but no class/subclass options?

4) Interesting choice to give a handful of spell abilities to the Svirfneblin, but only at the cost of a race-gated feat instead of as a purely racial ability.

I am bit sad to see, that we don´t get new subclasses and I hope, we will someday get some unearthed arcana articles with:

- storm sorcerer (it seems to be mentioned in the header of the sorcerer in the PHB)

- elemental domain priest

- elemental wizard

the last two could be a single school and a single domain with some suboptions.

I do think it is weird that the monk of the four elements didn't have any new options. The bard can get new elemental spells, but the monk does not get new ki options. Just seemed like an easy add on (an extra list of spells the monk can use with ki cost would have been simple I would have thought).

Aganazzar's scorcher should have a range of 60 feet. This would fall in line with the range it has always traditionally had. Furthermore, at a 30 foot range this spell is no more powerful than burning hands. As a second level spell, the increase in damage by 3 points (on average) isn't enough to set it apart, but doubling the range certainly would.

I really like the new cantrips, especially control flames, gust, mold earth and shape water. I'm glad to see some classic spells come back, like pyrotechnics and transmute rock. I'm also happy to see more elemental options, especially for sorcerers. Now there's a point to having something other than a red or gold dragon ancestry.

The new race options were a nice surprise. I'm glad to see the genasi again. The aarokocra seem quite powerful with their flying speed, but that's pretty much all that they get so I don't think they're too overpowered. I think that the deep gnome feat is a nice way of letting people play more powerful races without things like level adjustments.

I was a bit disappointed in Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, though. It's really weak for an 8th level spell. Sunburst is better in almost every way, and even circle of death laughs at it. Snilloc's snowball swarm is also weak for its level, and is inferior to shatter.

I like how they handled Aarokocra...really good flight but not much else and a warning to becareful as DM with them because flight is powerful. It's great! Also that is a lot of spells and all seem to be in line with current spells and not looking like any power-creep is happening.

Good job WOTC.

The Air and Earth Genasi seem weak. Compare them to their Fire and Water kin, and compare Air Genasi to Aarakocra.

It seems to me that Air and Earth's spells ought to refresh on a short rest.

I wanted sub-classes/ cleric domains (elemental sorcerer, and elemental priest) too. Also, something more for the elemental monk.

Oh well. They did add some races, and some interesting spells. Can't really complain when it's free on the D&D site. This was also a much better freebie than that Eberron bit. (I'm still mad about artificer as wizard sub-class.)

As far as the martial classes go, I would have been surprised to see much in an elemental themed publication. Races, feats, and magical items are about all you can do as elemental is a power source. The races are there, they just don’t have magical items or feats. With all the complaints people have made about the past games being too complex, they might be leaving the martial classes light for those people.

Now the fact that they are producing small publications like this, they might do some that are more limited to martial characters.

I could see elemental martial feats.

Thunder Warrior:

*When you hit with a weapon attack, deal 1d4 thunder damage and push the target 5'.

*You gain resistance to thunder.

Flame Warrior:

*When you hit with a weapon attack, deal 1d7 fire damage.

*You gain resistance to fire.

ect...

Yeah, Air and Water Genasi both habe abilities that let them bypass very serious dangers.  Darkvision is convinient.  Being immune to drowning or suffocation, however, can radically alter how an encounter is turns out.

Unless it specifically states that water disperses it, a cloud effect will still work in aqueous environments.  A gas is just another fluid.  So the air has the edge, there.  They come out about even, since levitate can be terribly abused if the player is clever enough.

Class options beyond spells are missing from the article so it seems likely they could be released later.  We know they are going to introduce 'alternative' class features for the ranger so I hope they do that for some of the caster builds too.

Elemental magic is so magical it's hard to see how they can lever in any martial love but clerics should get elemental domains and they should provide options whereby existing clerical domains can add appropriate additional optionsd to domain spell options while being limited to two choices per level.  Elemental sorcerer and druid builds are possible and alternate features for elemental monks could be in.

Personally though, I'm all about the shadow.

I feel like we should also be getting a water / cold based Cleric Domain with this release.      Not only does cleric appear to be iconic water genasi class (at least going by the picture), but we've already covered the fire and air elements (Light and Tempest, respectively).   It would also be an ideal time to get an Earth + Protection style Domain, as well.

Its not in the Player's Companion, but maybe the full one will indulge us?

Most likely they either canned the additional content to prevent bloat, or they shelved it and plan to put out a big book of that stuff all at once rather than interspersing it in the adventure paths that people may not want to buy just for the stuff that should be available without them.

Either way works for me. While I think an elemental sorcerer subclass makes sense and should exist, the only other elemental themed subclass that I want to see is sha'ir (and I don't care if it's wizard or warlock). I actively do not want to see elemental domains for clerics, because they really already have that covered in their current domains. If they start creating subclasses for every little tiny distinction of concepts they will end up violating the goals they have of avoiding bloat, and the new subclasses won't be similar to the PHB ones, because they will by necessity by narrower in focus. You'll end up with not only a bloat of subclasses, but two different types of subclasses. So I guess I'm not okay with either way. I'm okay if they shelved some of the stuff to come out in a later book, and canned the bloat, but I just do not want to see everything I get the impression they were working on added to the game, because then I have to make a bunch of decisions about what I allow and disallow, I have to experience frustration at their violating their own philosophy and goals, and it just makes me angry.
