To me, that is an iconic hoard monster that creeps in the dark, depths of the earth or sometimes in droves on the surface. Gibberlings to me are a good, low level challenge to throw at the party, yet the Monster Manual had a lack of them. I hope they are in a future product, PDF or book for 5th edition, I surely miss them. Are there any iconic monsters from past editions you miss? |

| #7MistwellMar 02, 2015 21:15:18 | The game lacks a Nymph if I'm not mistaken. |
| #8AaronOfBarbariaMar 02, 2015 21:36:10 | I can't think of anything iconic to the game that isn't in the Monster Manual... but I agree that, whether it was intentional or not, some of the monsters I consider iconic to particular settings are missing - such as the mentioned Gibberling.
I expect, however, that such monsters are the sort of thing that would show up in any adventures or campaign setting-specific monster books. |

Gotta go to work, I'll get back with more. |
| #10ReiusMar 03, 2015 0:39:06 | Rot grubs and ear seekers.
Also, sons of Kyuss.
And the 4e-style lamia.
(Ok, the last two maybe aren't "iconic" but I really like them. I'd call the first two both iconic and Gygaxian, though.) |
| #11Ath-kethinMar 03, 2015 2:39:51 | Jann are the only missing critter I actually miss; while I noticed the absence of gibberlings I have never in 20+ years of DMing used them so I didn't see it as a big deal. I do a lot with genies though, so missing the lowest-tier version stuck out. |
| #12AlHazredMar 04, 2015 7:19:28 | I don't think I can play a game that doesn't have stats for the Pink Dragon. |
| #13AlHazredMar 04, 2015 8:15:50 | I looked up the Gibberling, since I couldn't remember the critter. Now that I've checked it out, I question the use of the word "iconic" in association with it. While I can see that it has generated a certain amount of fan interest, I'm not sure it's really "iconic" in the sense that it is a creature you see a picture of and instantly say to yourself, "That's a D&D thing." Like, say, Beholders.
That said, I thought Zak Smith's reimagining of them (and a bunch of the Fiend Folio critters) was interesting. |
| #14IllithidbixMar 04, 2015 17:39:17 | I don't think the Gibberling has ever appeared in the 1st Monster Manual of any edition has it?
Whats missing? The Brain Mole. - There I said it. |

Maybe not well-known, but hella iconic IMO. If that doesn't say "D&D" to you, I'm not sure what does. |

And monsters from Dragon Magazine, like the aboleths "digievolution", trollhounds and the gray troll.

| #21LuisCarlos17fMar 06, 2015 12:44:19 | No problem about that. They could be published in the web in the 1st April. I wouldn´t be the first time.
* What about all the humanoid races from Dragon Magazine?
* The weretoad and werebadoon were canon, weren´t they?
I would like the return of all the werebeasts, even the werefox. And all the golems, from all settinsm and the constructs from AD&D 2nd Ed could be created by PCs.
* The return of half-golem template... and the petitioner template (handbook of planes 3rd) would need a total remake.
* There is a great potential for Thoon cult (MM V, 3.5 ed). Why not with any incarnum game mechanic?
* The dragonsteed from "Dragon Magic", one of coolest monster mounts. And the unicorn or pegasus subraces from dragon magazine.
* The centaur-like races, Ha'pony, doversh, gnoat..
* Little evil humanoids: knorckers and xvarts.

| #31MechatarrasqueMar 09, 2015 12:57:37 | I think some CR 4-9 fey should be the first priority (so that conjure fey isn't a worse spell than conjure woodland beings); nymphs and annis hags would be good starts. Elemental myrmidons would be nice too. It might make sense to make templates out of them so a body could fit any elemental or paraelemental into them, kind of like the bezerker and archmage NPC's in the monster manual. Rounding out the "help the conjure spells" list would be more celestials. Maybe lamerasu as mounts (to help distinguish them from sphinxes and shedus).......and lillends, definitely need them.
From a DM perspective, I would like to have babua and amarite demons (although centaur with demon resistances and at will wind walk seems to work pretty well), barghests, and larva mages. I have been using angels demodand/gehreleth (swapping necrotic for radiant and stickiness/poison skin/acid skin for healing), but real ones wouldn't hurt. Phoenix and kyrin (currently using half dragon roc and half dragon unicorn as temporary versions) would be appreciated. |
