This thread is an examination of that artwork and an attempt to match what is represented in those images with in game mechanics, as well as describe what might be occuring in the particular image or scene. Overall impressions or comments/jokes are welcome as well.
Starting with the cover:
- The fire giant and his bone helm are wonderful, I can't tell if it is a dragon or a demon bone helm of some sort but I really like the gemstones in the eye sockets.
- I'm not sure what class the woman fighting him is, but she is either flying or jumping and casting what appears to be some sort of ice based spell or ability (good element choice). The lack of an arcane/divine/instrument/druidic focus and the nature of her attire has me thinking this might be an elemental monk jumping up to put an ice attack right in the fire giants face (bad combat choice), but I applaud the effort and the concept. (also look at her expression "whoops made a bad call..." and her companions expression... "what are you doing?!?". The womans brow is not nearly furrowed enough for that to be a look of rage and determination, that is an "uh-oh" eyes open wide look.
- I do wish the artwork on the hell hounds was slightly more menacing, they look a tad too much like a domestic breed canines to instill fear in me. The artwork in the monster manual for the hell hound is a little better.
- From what I can see of the full image on the credits page, there are only two adventurers in this image...hopefully the DM modified the fire giant kings stats.
Pg. 9
- Really cool scene and setting for a fight with a red dragon and so much happening with the party of adventurers. The part is not engaging the dragon in his/her lair (good choice...maybe not a choice, but better all the same)
- The dwarf. Pure armored awesome. He isn't angled right, but I do believe he means to do a jumping bash attack straight at the dragons face. (alot of face jumping the bbegs so far)
- The archer XD ...at first glace appears doesn't appear to be aiming at the dragon at all, but she (i think) might be the only one in the party actually facing the dragon proper. Im assuming the elevation of the aim on the arrow is to adjust for the downward path of the arrow onto the dragons face.
- The fighter/paladin (?) is just about to step right off that tower.
- The casters lol... both are totally staring off at who knows what.
- The rogue, pretty sure she is eyeing the dragons claws on the peak of that building, maybe hoping to get a sneak attack at a cuticle or something.
- The artwork is spledid though, the armor/weapon detail of the party, the detail of the scales on the dragon, even the ghostly image of the tower city in the background is excellent.
