...and after reading the actual description text, a thought came to mind.
Mordenkainen's Sword produces a plane of force.
Spiritual Weapon produces a spectral object.
This could be interpreted as MS creating a tangible object (pure force encased within a structural field) while SW creates an ethereal, insubstantial object that only affects solid objects through a surge of energy upon striking.
This would mean that MS can be used in ways that SW can not. For example, as a foothold when climbing, or something to keep a handled wheel from turning, as a substitute key in an ancient puzzle of keyholes, etc.
Otto's Irresistible Dance could be used on a physically strong creature (not necessarily high level - an elephant for example) in a tight corridor to make it "accidentally" slam it's surrounding walls and ceiling, causing a tunnel collapse around it.
Silent Image could cover your escape after you turn a corner and enter a doorway by manifesting the appearance of a solid wall over the doorway.
What other creative applications can you think of for the magic of Dungeons and Dragons?

Since it makes the boom a wizard can knock at the front door while the party is in a different location, dimension door over to them, and then have the adversaries getting out of their way to investigate. It's a better use of the spell than opening a lock with it. |
