The Hoard of the Dragon Queen and the Rise of Tiamat were the 1st official 5E adventures put out by WoTC. They are the culmination of around 20 years or more of of a gradual storyline focused on Tiamat in the Realms. Tiamat was originally a Greyhawk NPC appearing the 1E monster Manual. Gods back then were a lot weaker and Lolth for example was a demon lord with 66 hit points.
Tiamat was not a majot FR deity in the 2E boxed set for FR as the main deities were gods such as Lathander, Tymora, Sune etc for PCs and the evil ones such as Bane, Bhaal, Myrkul, Cyric and Shar. The 1990 Forgotten Realms Adventures book touched on the main FR deities and Tiamat was not one of them. TSR released the first volume in a gods trilogy of books called Faiths and Avatars went bankrupt and the last two boks in the trilogy named Powers and Pantheons and Demihuman Deities came out after the WoTC buyout of TSR in 1997. Faiths and Avatars had the Greater, Intermediate and Lesser powers of the FR setting, Powers and Pantheons had the demipowers and gods of other pantheons.
Tiamat at this points was not a Faerunian Pantheon deity but was a Untheric Deity. Unther was based heavily on Sumeria and to the east of it was Mulhorand or fantasy Egypt. Both regions were blown up in the 4E Realms. Anyway Tiamat was a demipower/lesser power who killed Gilgeam the head of the Untheric Pantheon in the Time of Troubles. Gilgeam was also the king of Unther. She herself was nearly destroyed but put some of her divine essence in Tchazzer a Red Dragon. She was reduced to demipower status after this which meant her worshippers were anywhere between 1 and several hundred. This plotline was in Powers and Pantheons by Eric L Boyd and later updated in Faiths and Pantheons for 3.0. That book also revealed that Llira was a lesbian which had a thread dedicated to that tidbit on these very forums a few years ago. Eric L Boyd I consider to be one of the best FR lore writers up there with Greenwood and he also wrote Serpent Kingdoms for 3.5 as well which was also kind of blown up in 4E when they nuked the lands east of Chult.
Powers and Pantheons was also where they revealed Tiamat was going to become part of the Faerunian Pantheon around 1370 or 1371 DR. The 3.0 FRCS book was set in 1373 DR. Her faith was going to try and infiltrate the Cult of the Dragon which kind of makes sense I suppose as the cult had no official deity as such but tended to worship gods such as Shar, Myrkul, Velsharoon, Bane, Cyric etc. 3E came out and the changes were not to severe with the Shades coming back but relative to the Time of Troubles and the Spellplague it was reasonably restrained.
During 3E run Tiamat got a bit of a push late in the editions lifecycle with Dragons of Faerun. Tchazzer also fot a brief mention and his domains were provided ion Lost Empires of Faerun which also revealed some more information about the emergence of the modern Faerunian Pantheon. The major Tiamat push as such was Dragons of Faerun which focused on her, Tchazzer and Unther/Chessenta and had a chapter called Tyranny of the Dragon Queen which sounds a bit familiar these days . The metaplot in Dragons of Faerun revealed that Sammaster an ex chosen of Mystara was trying to get the Cult of the Dragon working for him. It was really his last throw of the dice and he initiatated an early Rage of the Dragons. The big revela here was what had caused the Rage of the Dragons which was an interesting tidbit of information going back to the 1E Realms. It tied up a few loose ends of FR lore and I was not a fan of all of the metaplot I did like the information about Tiamats church and Unther. And this is more or less where the story ends for me. This was because I ignored 4E Realms entirely as the timejump and changes to the world I was not a fan of to put it mildly. They blew up parts of the world that got a push in late 3E Realms (Serpentes and Unther/Mulhoran/Chessenta) which kind of invalidated the lore tht had been built up and books had paid money for. In addition the Hoard of the Dragon Queen for 5E kind of feels like it is where the plotline of Dragons of Faerun would have eneded up but has downplayed the time line jump. At least they have made an effort this time around though to build on what came before rather than nuking it. |

Tiamat has been a setting-generic fixture since (at least) the 1e Monster Manual and the 1e Deities & Demigods/Legend & Lore (in which she is treated as a lesser deity (along with Bahamut, Lolth, Asmodeus, etc.). She's part of Ed Greenwood's vision since his 1e-era The Dragon magazine articles that detailed the Nine Hells (which have been assimilated into D&D canon). In 2e, she continues as one of the dragon deities in Monster Mythology (a setting-neutral supplement), and is featured (along with Bahamut) in the 2e Forgotten realms sourcebook, Draconomicon.. |
