Why is there still no movement on a digital tools front for 5th edition? Honestly I'd be glad if they fired up the support for Ddi, and put the 5e information into the monster bullet and character builder.

Not being able to see movement is not the absence of movement.

WotC is working on what to do about digital offerings since the intial plan fell through, they just aren't giving constant updates of "Nothing to report yet." on the matter.

Same here. 5e is not being adopted in my area due to there being no tools, official or unofficial/3rd party.

So I get their own digital tool is a low priority for them, but why not get to the OGL, or what ever they want to call it, so others can fill the gap until they deside they want to do it? While I understand some folks don't care because they think the game is simple enough, others still enjoy the ability to use a digital tool.

When has WotC ever handled the digital side of D&D well?

Beats me why people expect a digital side of D&D. WoT is not a software development house.

Do you need one? Not like PF when it is near impossible to do the maths w/o digital help.

5th pc's are very easy to roll up.

Im with defrac on this - I can see the reasoning behind a digital character builder as its needed for pathfinder to keep up with all the optimizations people tend to use in the game.  Herolabs did a great job and i use it myself for my pathfinder characters.  Herolabs is waiting on the license to work with 5e and if they do, i'll plop down my money to support them for doing so.  I dont think I need it for 5e but its nice to have none the least.  What I don't understand if the "we arent playing 5e unless we have a digital support so if you could explain that a little better please.  Would herolabs suffice or are you looking for soemthing else?  If herolabs would suffice, I think that would be a no-brainer for WoTC to get that set up and setup quickly.

I'd like a digital tool, but there are many, many things they have to consider before just opening things up.

In the meantime, I've managed to cobble together my own tools either from this forum or enworld.org (go to enworld.org>resources>character sheets for example).

The best thing the digital tools can bring is the ability to compile, sort and filter lists of information like spells and mosters. Background calculations like in 3e and 4e just aren't as necessary.

Flashback to 2010:

I'm getting ready for my weekly D&D session that my friends and I have at their apartment. In my car is my computer monitor, a USB drive, and a bag of dice. This is all I used to DM, and I didn't even use the bag of dice. I used my one friend's PC, with a dual monitor setup, for my DM screen. One one screen I had Maptools running with all of the encounters I had written up, and combat ready to go as we got to it.  On the other screen Firefox open with  a the following tabs, D&D compendiun, Dungeon magazine issue, google docs (DM notes, and treasure table), and one other app that I can't recall.  On a separate table, my friends were set up with their characters, dice and a laptop running Maptools.

I really enjoyed this setup, as did my players. They got to see the maps that came with the adventures, we didn't waste a large amount of time drawing up new maps (and time was an issue due to how long 4e combat took).  I enjoyed it because i didn't have to mees around with the keeping track of how my monsters were faring in combat, I could focus on my next move, while my players clicked on the target of their attack, rolled their dice or had the computer roll, and resolve any effects automatically.  This also let me focus on the story, and have more roleplaying in our game. Yes it took a lot of time and effort out of the game on my part to get those things prepared, but I enjoyed doing it, and the results that it brought.

Unfortunately, that was the last time I was able to play D&D in earnest. That didn't stop me from finding different ways to prepare my game and make my prep time more efficient.

Back to the present:

Here we are 5 years later, and a new version of D&D is upon us.  With the advances in technology, and digital publishing, I do not see why there isn't at least minimal digital support for 5e (minimal = PDF books).

What I'd like to see as far as digital tools is what Morningstar/Dungeonscape said they were going to deliver (I AM NOT REFERRING TO THE CRAPPY BETA THAT WE ALL SAW AND EVERYONE BITCHED ABOUT.) I'm referring to the suite of tools that allowed one to access any bit of information about the character on their tablet. Tools that allowed DMs to share bits of information, treasure, etc with individual players.  Tools that had the capacity to allow one to purchase the latest release from Wizards and after reading overthe adventure, run it from their tablet.  That is what I'd like to see, because due to my busy life, the less time that I can spend preparing to run a game of D&D, the more time I can spend playing and enjoying the game of D&D.

I find it interesting that folks are using the phrase "isn't at least minimal digital support for 5e" when there are WotC provided form-fillable PDF character sheets and an entirely free version of the game rules which come in PDF or HTML form.

I get it, you want more - and that is fine. It's the claim that there is absolutely nothing when that isn't actually true that seems very odd.

Ok, fine, WotC has provided the most minimal support of digital content with a digital character sheet that you can fill in, and free basic rules pdf. I apologize for my mistake, but not for my opinion of Wizard's completely backwards approach to adapting to technology and current ways of playing the game.

I do miss the 2e Core Rules software package. That had it going on in spades. 3e's e-Tools, on the other hand, even after Code Modkey fixed the crap out of it, still stucked hugely (Code Monkey would have had to rebuild it from the ground up and add new features to it in order to make a decent package).

I love tech as much as the next guy, but D&D has always been and will always be a pencil and paper kind of game. That's not nostalgia speaking either. It's reality. D&D is about the table experience. That's always been one of the major selling points, and something I've never found a replacement for. That's why D&D Video Games are fun, but never as good as the original.

Apps are great! Google Hangouts are great! VTTs like Roll20 are great! Character Builders and Automated Character Sheets are great!

But playing in-person with nothing but some paper and some dice? Unbeatable.

To clarify, I'm not against having digital tools. I've used Roll20 and GoogleHangouts to run games before and it was tons of fun. I would have rather been gaming in person, but it was still fun doing so remotely. But I don't think D&D is ever going to be replaced by another game just because D&D doesn't have digital tools. One of the major selling points about D&D is that you can hang out with your friends in person.

There's a free pdf that is searchable and the html version of those rules on the website (though I haven't yet played with it to find out how smooth spell reference is). No need to pay money when what spell functionality you want is free - though I haven't yet confirmed that every spell a monster has in the monster manual is in the basic rules because I haven't actually used many monsters with spells yet.

I asked if you could provide and example of what you think is unclear, and you said you can't. That implies you don't find anything unclear... or that you didn't mean to choose the words that you chose to use in that sentence.
