Unearthed Arcana: What do we want next?

Personally, I'd like to see an Unearthed Arcana article for Greyhawk similar to the one done for Eberron. It would be a simple process for most ofthe races, but I'd like to see traits descriptions for the more unique races of the srtting. Also, class archetypes, druid circles, monastic orders, sacred oaths, sorcerous origins, etc.

Thoughts on what you'd like to see in upcoming installments of UA?

more Sorcerer Bloodlines, a charismatic, intelligence, and wisdom based fighter archetype.  A generalist or metamagic wizard archetype, and a dex based barbarian archetype.

I'd like to see an article giving us some of the remaining (usually more eccentric) non-psi options from 4e. Specifically I would like to get:

* Races: Wilden and Shardmind

* Classes: Shaman (I'm thinking as a Druid) and Warden (maybe as a low-caster Barbarian)

* The creepy shadow power source assassin options, under a different name, tied to a new rogue or warlock type.

Things I'd like to see in future U.A. Articles:

More fighter Arch types

More Paladin Arch types, Oaths

 Knight of Solanmia Oath variants

More Ranger Arch types

More Barbarian arch types

Sorcerer blood lines

Red , white, Black robed DL Wizards

Univeralist wizard

DL Rules for draconians- Dragonborne Variants

Kender

Goblinoids as p.c. races

More feats

Expanded universal combat manuevers apart from the Battle master fighters list.

Expanded weapons charts, an official arming sword or broad sword, racial weapons like the Dwarven War axe, & Lances etc. I'd settle for each weapon found in my 1e. PHB.

I want the Eberron material rewritten, it was weak and failed to embody the original 3.5 Classes and races. (IMHO).

More "Official" backgrounds, expanded list of Bonds, flaws, ideals.

Rules for learning new skills and improving them apart from spending a feat to do so. For further character customization.

I would like to see weapon feats that aren't useful for polearms or crossbows.  A melee Wizard archetype.  A friend of mine would like to see a Rage Druid Archetype.  Would also like to see a Monk Zen Archer archetype.

Dark Sun would be a nice next step, or else Ravenloft. For Ravenloft, we could get necromantic themed Bard archetype, Shadow Patron for Warlocks, Vampiric Bloodline for Sorcerer, and Shadar-kai, Shade, Revenant, and Vryloka PC races. For Dark Sun, they could do Thri-Kreen, Mul, and the whole Preserver/Defiler mechanic for arcane magic, while providing the Sorcerer-King Patron for Warlock and a Circle of the Ancestors (aka Shaman) archetype for Druids. They could also talk a bit about low-tech campaigns and include DM material for some of the really hazardous wilderness conditions in Dark Sun.

Either way, I don't see them delving into Psionics yet (something that would be sorely missing from Dark Sun, but not really relevant for a Ravenloft UA).

In what possible world do you think 4e items would fit into 5e?

I don't know how to express how completely wrong you are, Brock.

For starters, none of this flat plusses to saves/AC/attacks/skills nonsense, the game math in 5e is too constricted for that. I'm seeing somehting more akin to add ons like poison/oil chambers for rapid deployment of such substances on weapons, grapples, whihnches, extra reach, just basically cool features that stay away form the core game math. For magic I was thinking runes that bind an item to the person, or maybe enchanting to burn HD for damage? maybe a more in depth set of special materials?

Seriously people use your imaginations once in a while.

I'd like to see crafting rules too. Also, mundane items or minimal magic trinkets like Thunderstones. Plus some ways to incorporate ingredients into spell components to make magic more modular. Using a ruby worth X grants a fire-based spell Y effect.

I would like a playtesting about "ki manevuers" and "incarnum souldmeld", and pact magic. Why not a "witch-doctor" what mixture binder and totemist classes'

Why not a bard subclass to test "truename" magic?

* I like the concept of "racial parangon class" fro 3.5 Unearthed Arcana, and the monster classes, and the monster template classes.

* An article about magic(+psionic) vs firearms

* The "thoon" illithid sect with incarnum soulmeld powers.

* The return of "maneuvers" and the poses, used by the crusader, warblade and swordsage from "Tome of Battle: book of nine swords".

Assuming that we aren't going to get them in book form, I'd like to see the following from the UA articles:

Playable monster races.  Lots of them.

Psionics.

Attacking/defending fortified structures.

More thorough advice for creating/modifying content without it being over/underpowered.

New subraces and subclasses.

Especially for humans and elves, perhaps some new races that belonged to NPC's before.

Am I the only one who thinks Sorcerer's got enough lately? Their 'specs' doubled through PDF's, it's time to pay some attention to other classes.

Classes like the Monk, Fighter or Paladin could do with something.

Feats and backgrounds!

Oh yes, I really, really, really want more of these.

Backgrounds and the features are really nice, but I think the PHB is really lacking at the moment.

And the Feats are nice at the moment, but I would like to see more of those.

Like the Dragonmarks but less overpowered.

I think that if psionics show up in a UA article, it will be the same kind of "this is just a sorcerer with a name change" half-assed crap we got in 3.x. If you want that, use the spell points option from the DMG. I would like to see psionics in 5e, but I would like for it to be and feel different from what we already have. Such a wish is, I think, beyond the scope of the current Unearthed Arcana framework.

2E Psionics would really be different than any other class.  It wouldn't be imitating the wizard, sorcerer, cleric, warlock, or bard.  And it would definitely have it's own feel.  I am not sure if that is implementable, but it would definitely be a different beast.

#35

TenaciousJ

May 10, 2015 18:13:04

I'll echo the sentiments for wild psionics and Dark Sun.  I didn't get into D&D until 3.0, so I missed out on playing any official Dark Sun stuff since I disliked 4e.  A lot of the psionic classes would probably work well as archetypes on the existing classes. (i.e. Psychic Warrior Fighter, Soulknife Rogue, Wilder Sorcerer, Psion Wizard, Ardent Cleric etc.)

Eberron monsters would be awesome.  I want to see how Quori and the Inspired are handled particularly.  Kalashtar would be nice too.  I've avoided converting all those things because we don't have a psionics base to use yet.

I want to see dire animals and more templates like horrid, half fiend, voidmind, titanic, monster of legend, etc.  Sometimes I just want to make a monstrosity out of a weasel.

#36

Knightfall1972

Checking back in on this thread. A lot of great ideas here. I'd be interested in seeing the races for Dragonlance. Also, Dark Sun is one of my favorite settings but psionics would have to be done first and playtested like crazy. I hope WotC does an offical playtest for psionics, which leads to another rulebook.

And I'd like to see 5E version of the various unique races from Mystara -- rakasta, lupin, tortle, etc. Plus that setting's iconic monsters.

#37

Solarazhade

May 15, 2015 10:37:29

I don't know if this would be for UA but when Elemental Evil came out I really wanted to see 4 elemental themed cleric domains using some of the new spells.

I would love to see more sorcerous origins particularly bloodline based origins.

Playable monster races I would love to see first off would be Goblin and Kobold.  The more the merrier though!

I would love to see psionics but I would want that to be a base class and I feel that is too ambitious for UA.  Psionics as an archetype would make me sad.

Finally, one of my favorite prestige classes in past editions was the Incantatrix, I would love to see an Incantor/Incantatrix archetype for either the bard, sorceror, wizard, or warlock.

#38

Marandahir

May 15, 2015 14:36:37

I feel like Psionics is separated really into some that are subclasses and one full-class.

You'd get the Psion as a full class with the various disciplines from the past, maybe a few more. Then you'd have Psychic Warrior as a subclass of Fighter, a Divine Mind / Zen Fist Monk subclass, a Soulknife subclass of Monk or Rogue, a Psionic Magic subclass for Sorcerers (emulating the Wilder), and an Ardent subclass for Paladins.

And I'll concur that some realm management would be nice, too

Hmmm, maybe some weapon specific maneuvers? Dunno if they'd take up some of the maneuvers you'd get from the Battlemaster, mundane ranger, or the feat, or if you'd get access to one or two just by using the weapon.

I miss all the little humanoids, like the springans, the xvarts, the knockers..

I would like a class about monster traits, something like the totemist from "Magic of Incarnum", and a class about monster allies, like a pokemon trainer.

* I also wish the D&D of d20 Future alien races.

* A playtesting about the chronomancer class. There is a great potential to create stories.

* Age categories for vampires and mummies, like the dragons.

My list:

1 - Fixed races.   The dragonborn and tiefling are sadly pitifully in terms of mechanics.   I'd like to see alternatives to bring them with some fixed nuences.

2 - A series of Psionic subclasses.   I don't care about Wild Talents, and, frankly, the Sorcerer already swallowed everything unique about psions, so I don't see any point to a separate class.

3 - More alternative "areas" to play in.  We have a maritime UA, I'd like to see a desert based UA, an article on urban based games, a pure Underdark/single dungeon style game, etc.

4 - Fixes/alternatives to certain subclass options, like Elemental Monk, Blade and Chain Warlock, Beastmaster Ranger, and the like.

Something that isn't half baked garbage would be nice.  In previous editions I'd carefully vet stuff from Dragon and wouldn't allow 3rd party stuff at all as it often wasn't up to the level of quality I'd feel comfortable with in a game.  The UA stuff we've been getting is far below the quality level of Dragon.

I would like more detailed options for spending gold. My DM is lazy (or busy, which from a player's perspective is not that different), and that in 5e is a problem. It could be something a bit more in-depth for business, or art or politics (that would be cool).

Psionics subclasses

I would like them to add more class-specific spells. I think they give more feeling to a class.

Some more feats. They are the Ultimate Customization Tool, and to the ones who don't like multiclassing usually feats are even more interesting.

I like how they are gradually introducing more races, keep it going  XD

More downtime stuff, inlcuding owning a business, advancing in a guild, running a merchant ship or similar, etc. WoTC has always been needlessly wary of giving characters options to advance and make money outside of adventuring.

Like...first of all, why do you care if a group wants to use DnD to play guilds and merchants? How is that a bad thing?

Second, what group isn't going to adventure, just because they're rich? And if money makes them more like the avengers than like the A Team...ok? Give them more challenging quests and encounters, just like you would if they won lots of sweet loot adventuring.

Anyway, other things I'd like to see:

More feats, that serve different purposes. Examples: Feats that give benefits similar to "spash" multiclassing, or "dipping", and/or let you get in on a little bit of what another classes subclasses do. Feats that are similar to 4e themes and earlier prestige classes in theme and type of benefits.

More fighting styles. Especially more creative ones like the Mariner fighting style, such as one for fighting Acrobatically. I'd also love to see some weapons that aren't that great normally, but that with the right fighting style are as effective as normal martial weapons with one of the standard fighting styles.

Options for expanded weapon and armor properties, with guidelines on what does and doesn't work well together.

Rules for modifying items, including weapons and armor, and for inventing stuff.

I'd prefer if new weapons were introduced that were on par with the existign weapons instead of relying on fighting styles to bring them up to par, see if you need a fighting style to bring a weapon up to par you're still gonna be behind because the guys using the decent weapon can take a normal fightign style and come out ahead.

A new setting being brought about.

More modern day and futuristic elements, this could include the introduction of the Psionic.

The Druid sub-class Shaman.

Fighter sub-class Samurai.

Rogue sub-class Ninja.

The Bolas.

Community involvement, such as allowing certain community members to contribute to the UA with their ideas.

I feel the UA will probably be a whole new published works.  A full fledged book with new class options, races, spells, etc...

Ninja, samurai, kensaki and wu-jen are too cool to be only subclasses. Maybe variant classes would be enough. I imagine the "oriental" classes with the "(ki?) maneuvers" from "Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords". The kensai would be the swordsage. Ninja a stealth class with ki maneuvers, wu-jen a hybrid classes, arcane + a second power source for each subclass (divine, primal, psionic). When a concept or archetype is too famous or popular, it has to be its own class, or at least a variant class. It isn´t for gameplay but by marketing reasons. Each archetype is like a mark of identitty.

I did convert the Iaijutsu Master PrC from 3rd Ed to 5th Ed.

I kinda suggested the yakuza as a joke, but there is a set of subclasses I'd actually like to see, either in UA or somewhere else. Custom circles for the druidic sects of Eberron.

The Ashbound, Children of Winter, Gatekeepers, Greensingers and Wardens of the Wood all had distinct mechanical flavor in third edition through feats, and I could very well see that being done with subclasses instead in fifth. The Wardens would probably just be the Circle of the Land because they are the most generic of the sects.

Oh, sure, I could kitbash them with backgrounds and feats and multiclassing and whatever, but I'd rather see distinct mechanical options that reinforce setting flavor.

A more likely article I'd like would be one on the bloodlines of Birthright, along with meatier rules for domain management.

If I want to play a D&D samurai or ninja,then...WotC creates the D&D samurai or ninja, or I will the Pathfider RPG sourcebook with the samurai and ninja classes.

So I'd love to have some articles on Eberron, Dark, Sun, Planescape, and Spelljammer.  New races and subclasses where appropriate for each, aside from just general information about integrating them into 5e, would be great.  I'd also like to add my voice to the chorus asking for psionics stuff (preferably in addition to an actual book release).

I really want to see things for the DM's toolbox.

  • A GAZILLION traps of all different types
  • Hazardous terrain ideas
  • Curses
  • 5E take on Skill challenges.
  • New forms of Exploration mechanics
  • Expanded ideas for how to make Factions relevant to your game
  • Mass Combat round 2

I would love some planescape, ravenloft, and birthright archetypes.  I think Mystara would be the perfect setting to reintroduce kingdom rules.  Overall I really like those settings and would love updates for it.  But generally they will never make people happy revamping old settings.  They should probaly work on the development of new settings that are not just a rehash of older settings.  The new settings should have a cool twist.  A steam punk setting, a magitech setting, an ancient world setting like Babylon and Sumeria with a dark sun/conan twist, something for the anime crowd, things like that.  I'm getting into diesel punk.  I am a big fan of wizards in space.  Give me faster than light starships and a starship with the technomancer archetype.  Hmmm I think I need to work on a technomancy school of magic. possibly subschool..

But I think Unearthed Arcana is perfect for updating older settings to 5E.

I just want more adventures. Not so much these long hardcover campaigns. But good old fashoined modules.
