When do these happen? Will it be Friday?

When is the next actual update?

I think that the only way to be sure is to constantly spam download the Basic PDF every few minutes, all day, every day and check it each time.

Let us know when it's finally updated.

The Basic Rules PDF will be updated as soon as it can be.

The important thing is the definition of "as soon as it can be" in regards to the update. It means as soon as the design team have finished the rules content, polished it up, and inserted it into the basic PDF, corrected any layout snafus caused, and then uploaded it - but also means at some point after people can buy the PHB in their friend local wizards play network store.

That means the 8th at the earliest, but it could take some time past that point since the developers have told us some DMG contents are being added as well, and the DMG is still in finishing so those parts might not already be done and ready to add.

Last, but probably most important:

They WILL make an announcement once the file is updated because it is important to them that everyone knows about it.

I'm pretty sure it will be the 8th or the 9th (barring some sort of unforseen setback on their end), because the plan was to have the content there for people to run a complete campaign as soon as they have a PHB.

If it's not updated on the 8th I'm going to be very unhappy. I'm going to be feverishly working to run a campaign on saturday. They claimed that I won't need the DMG and MM because when the PHB comes out I will be able to run a full game. I'm counting on that. Im counting on having monsters, at least a basic framework for creating monsters and NPCs and basic stuff like that. If not, then why released the PHB, I don't need it. It's pointless if I can't do anything with it. I've already ran the starter set.

I was thinking it would include some Monster Manuel stuff. My group Is playing through the starter set, and I preordered the Hoard of the Dragon Queen, but I have no urge to run it. I'm basically using it to plan how adventures should go, (and for some monster stats.) I don't have Forgotten Realms-philia that everyone at WOTC has. I started playing in 4E's Nentir Vale and my world is sort of a combination of that and Greyhawk.

If D&D is really about freedom and options, I'm chomping at the bit for the option to play anything other than Forgotten Realms.

(I don't mean to sound super anti-FR, but I never really liked the idea of giant, eon-spanning histories I'd need to at least be familiar with to run a setting. Being a newish DM with oldish players, I'm at a huge disadvantage with most prepublished worlds. I liked how 4E did Eberron and Dark Sun where they started the story where the original ones started. For FR, the Adventurer's League gives links to a bunch of, (roughly $5 each,) PDFs for each chunk of the setting. When most of your group has all the details filled in for the setting ahead of you, it makes it way more effort forme to keep up.

It does seem like a cool setting, but I dislike the years of history I know very little about.)

*Also, I have read about eight of the Drizzt books and like them, but for some reason, liking the Drizzt stories is also flamebait.

Merl's said he hoped he could do it on the 8th.

But no promises, because the DMG is taking alot of his time.

#36

BoldItalic

Aug 07, 2014 11:17:59

The basic update that we are awaiting, will consist of content drawn verbatim from the MM and the DMG. The MM has already been finalized, so that's not a problem. But until the text of the DMG is finalized, the extracts from that can't be finalized. So things have to be done in that order.

The time pressure arises because the HotDQ adventure releases tomorrow and the updated PDF is required to play it.

Meanwhile, we can all get impatient but it won't make any difference

#37

Lecarde

Aug 07, 2014 11:44:08

It's required? How? What does the Hoard of the Dragon Queen have going on that needs the new PDF?

#38

Karnos

Aug 07, 2014 12:27:50

If I purchase the PHB tomorrow, the basic rules will certainly be updated immediatly after, because in that case I won't have time to look at them since I'll be distracted by my shiny new book.

If I fail to purchase a copy of the PHB tomorrow, then there will undoubtably be a delay, and the basic rules update will not occur until the 19th.

Published adventures have always had their monster stat blocks in them, as well as DM 'eyes only' tips/rules. It is pretty cool that apparently all you need for playing published adventures is Basic and the purchased adventure (and dice, paper, and pencils, of course). To really enjoy D&D, IMO, you'll need all 3 core books minimum, and WotC knows that.

I hope us Basic people, and on the fence people, like me, will at least get 15-30 monsters in the Basic PDF update that is supposed to come out when the PHB hits shelves. I don't want to buy adventures set in FR just for a handful of magic items (which I can easily make up on my own) and a handful of 5e monsters (of which I'd need at least 15 very different* stat blocks to feel comfortable making up more).

*Casters, melee and ranged humanoids, a dragon, demons, abhorrant creatures, intelligent and uninteligent undead, constructs, natural tooth and claw and magical tooth and claw creatures, etc.

To SETI,

They're going to revise the PDF to make it longer. It will replace the current PDF. (At least, this is what they've implied.)

I've got a 12-hour car ride on Saturday and I'd love to have it by then.

Just picked up Hoard of the Dragon Queen. Looks good, only complaint (and kind of a big one) is no monster stat blocks for normal creatures. I know it will be in the basic update (it kind of has to be to run the adventure) but I would have just assumed the stat blocks would be in the adventure.

Edit: Also, the Tyranny of Dragons page really should have a link not only to the online supplement, but also a blurb about the first book (the name of the first book isn't mentioned in print anywhere on the page), and a store locator for people to buy the book.

Looks like it may be updated. It says v0.2, and the .pdf is dated August 12, 2014 on the cover page.

That being said, I'm not sure how to figure out what is new in it.

New content:

  • Noble character background.
  • A few spells have been added.
  • An appendix on FR deities.
  • An appendix on FR factions.

This isn't the update with monster/DMing content they've promised is coming.

The magic items in the DM part seem to be a different selection from the ones in the HotDQ download so it's worth having both.

Pages 7..9 of the Player's have been re-organised but it's the same material as far as I can see.

Likewise pp 44..45 and 49..55 (equipment). The tables have been moved around within the text.

A change i noticed: the bottom of the page grants permission to photocopy now. As does the DM document.

pukunui81: @gregbilsland @mikemearls Any chance you could post a "change log" of what's new/different in the players' Basic Rules document?

gregbilsland: @pukunui81 @mikemearls Yeah, we're going to try to get something posted on the basic rules landing page shortly.

For those not following twitter: on p57 of the DM document, the example is printed twice with different numbers. Both seem to be partly wrong!

Well, updated lacks new classes... I don't see anythign worth mentioning (or downloading for) on the 0.2 Player Rules.

DM Update on the other hand is more than welcome.
