Im thinking of using the 3rd edition weapons and a crit chart modified from first edition for my 5th edition campaign. But I havent had enough playtime to see if it would break 5th. I know it will kinda increase the rocket tag of 5th, but thats just something Ive accepted about this edition. Any opinions on this?

Yea it would break champion fighters and Barbs.

Remember weapon damage and math in this game are calculated very carefully (for the most part)

A Barb would have 2 chances to roll a x3 crit PLUS bonus damage, good bye dragon one hit

It would also hand out the lvl 3 champion fighter ability to everybody with a longsword.....

There is no reason to do this, most of the dice damage are the same

If you want to create new weapons just follow this simple forumula

 standard martial weapon is

single hand 1d8 + property

add a extra property decease weapon damage die

Increase damage Die add a negitive property (two-handed property)

Or think of every martial is 1d10 two-handed

add or remove properties.

I think the 2e chart would work.

Ive thought about the champion and barbarians abilities when it comes to doing this. It also will affect monsters that use weapons, making them much more lethal. I dont think I would just add the weapons in as is, more like use 3rd as a starting point and messing around with it. 5ths weapons are just so boring this edition, I feel they need something. Yeah its nice that alot of class powers affect them, but I want more than just a couple of feats affect what people choose for weapons.

The weapon chart is one of the few things in this edition I'm really nervous about messing with.

And crit charts were always, honestly, a terrible idea. I, at least, have never had one increase my enjoyment of a campaign - they just take influence out of the hands of players and dump more of it on the dice, almost always to the PCs' detriment.

Why do you want to include the 3rd Ed weapon table?

Personally I like the simpler weapon table as it means there isn't the problem of some weapons (often rather bizaare ones) being flat out worse or better.

5E has kinda given up on the idea of being superextragood at a very specific weapon, and focused around the idea of more generic fighting styles (sword and board vs duel weilding vs twohanded) instead.

And I'd be very wary about changing it in that way.

What does the 3E weapon tables have that you feel is lacking from the 5E game?

I think gives us a bit more information to work with when it comes to advice.

I liked the variability in the 3E weapon table. Heck, I liked the variability in the 4E weapon table. The 5E weapon table has too many duplicate stats.

Understand that additional crit ranges or crit multipliers are going to have a HUGE impact on this edition. Specifically I'm thinking about a rogue, but it goes for others as well.

For example, take everyones favorite finese weapon...the Rapier. And let's put it with a 5th level rogue.

That means anytime that rogue hits while rolling a natural 18, 19, or 20 he's doing 2d8+dex+6d6 damage. Or take a rogue with a longbow at 11th level doing 3d8+dex+18d6

Or take a half-orc fighter with a greataxe using a manuever that adds his superiority dice. Suddenly you're looking at 4d12 (any 1's or 2's being able to be rerolled once) + STR + 3d8

I understand the desire to give some more diversity to weapons, but I think at this point its way to early to be trying to tinker with such things as I think you'll run into a lot of unexpected issues.
