I am starting a campaign and have told players that if a subclass isnt present that they are interested in then we can work something out so one of my players has querried about a Vestige bloodline Sorcerer. I find myself drawing a blank so I am here crowd sourcing ideas. Thanks ahead of time.

Does your player have a specific vestige in mind?

YEah basically the various vestiges are too numerous and varied for a solid sub-class, you could do sub-classes based around a single vestige.

Unless... You might be able to pick 3-4 magic/legacy oriented vestiges and do a sort of totem barbarian type job.

Hmm. I think it would have to go one of two ways. Either choose a single vestige to design class abilities from, or design class abilities that manifest differently depending on a variety of vestiges.

As a for instance, if the dragon bloodline effects AC by manifesting scales, then manifesting the vestige Hastur (just to throw a name) would grant the ability of blur without having to know the spell or spend a slot, but its duration is "1 minute" and can't be used again until after a short or long rest.

Or choose a specific vestige to personify, but at the end of each long rest, you can choose the same or another vestige. You'd have to create the different vestiges and qualities, but it's first a step. A given ability at 1st, 6th, 14th and 18th levels, depending on the vestige manifested today.

Or, qualities that are the same for the levels mentioned above that are simply based out of the bloddline in general. Which is to say all vestige bloodline sorcerers share these qualities at 1st, 6th, 14th and 18th levels. Though there might be options within the ability - like the resistances offered by the dragon bloodline that are dependant on the type of dragon patron. Examples might be: an enahncement to an ability score (not to exceed 20 - or can exceed for a single effect), resistance (temporary or as long as the vestige is manifested) to a damage type not limited to just energy, but maybe a type of weapon damage, etc.

Just brainstorming. Hope it helps.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason your player doesn't want to play a warlock?

For me the vestige pact magic is like a prestige class or subclass you can change each pact check. Lots of vestiges can be hook for adventures, for example temporal extra reward if the PC does a special action, for example a Kas the vampire (vestige from Dragon Magazine) would reward if a Vecna's cleric is killed by the binder. Maybe a vestige tries to becomes a god, or a group tries to redeem the vestige Amon.

I am starting to think that maybe he should look more in the Warlock direction.

It is generally considered more his baliwack, unless you have a specific binder class.

I am unsure how well the binder class would suit 5e.

It could function fine assuming it was well designed, but it would be difficult and time consuming to set up. A sub-class for warlock would be faster as long as we didn't go too crazy, and frankly the warlock IS pact magic in 5e so an extra class seems silly.

Converting 3rd Ed classes to 5th Ed can be quite easy (most conversion friendly edition to date), I would go with converting the 3rd Ed Binder class from ToM.
