Hey guys and gals.  I just made this item for a level 12 sword and boarder I'm playing and thought I'd share it with the community for use and tweaking.  Enjoy.

Vibranium Shield

Armor (shield) very rare (requires attunement)

The Vibranium Shield is a high quality steel shield imbued with magic. When you use the Attack action, you can choose to throw this shield as one of your attacks. When thrown, it has the thrown property with a normal range of 30 feet, and a long range of 90 feet. When you hit with this shield it deals 1d6 damage. Alternatively, when thrown it can be used to make a shove attempt against the target. Once thrown, it will return to you at the end of your current turn, until which time you can not benefit from it in any way.

As an action, the Vibranium Shield can be thrown and made to ricochet between as many as four targets. The first target must be within 30 feet of you, and additional targets must be no more than 30 feet from the first. Each target must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 damage and either be knocked prone, or pushed up to 10 ft (your choice). The shield returns to you at the end of your turn. Once used, this ability can not be used until the following day.

I would've likely dropped the second paragraph and just let you make multiple attacks with the shield as a normal thing . . . Although I wouldn't have the shield return until the next round.

I say this, because that's how I wrote up Xena's chakram. (Mind you, that was written up as a non-magical weapon)

Yeah, my first thought was that you become a warrior princess named Xena when you get this weapon.

Instead of returning at the end or your turn, the shield shouldn't return until the start of your next turn.  That way, if you chose to throw it, you don't have it on the enemies turn.  Otherwise, you will very rarely be without it for defense, even using it as a thrown weapon each turn.

I was thinking more like Captain America, but Xena is cool too.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Some of the points you've brought up are things I considered, but in the end I'm still mostly happy with how it ended up.  Here are some of my thoughts.

The reason I had it return a t the end of the turn was so that your shield does not lose its utility as a defensive option entirely, while still giving you the opportunity to use it as a ranged attack each roundl; I did not intend a trade-off between offensive options and defense, I intended a strict increase in options.

-  You don't lose much, but if for whatever reason you are targetted by an opportunity attack or a readied attack (perhaps even triggering off your shield leaving your grasp), you do lose some AC.

-  Returning at the end of your turn also limits it to one attack per turn, which when compared to the Dwarven Thrower, is already a big limitation.  This makes the shield a solid option for ranged attacks, but does not make your character equally viable at ranged and melee fighting simultaneously.

-  Having it return at the end of your turn is also part of why I did not make it useable with multiple attacks.

-  I think returning at the beginning of your next turn limits it too much.  In that case it makes your sweet magic shield either a shield or a weapon, and I wanted it to be both.

All that being said, that's just what I think, and I certainly would not suggest anyone shouldn't change it to a form more suitable to their preferences.  Truth be told, this is actually pretty weak for a very rare item that requires attunement.

I think you've forgotten a key property of vibranium. That it absorbs kinetic energy. THAT'S why Caps shield is so awesome.

.

It allows him to take take those full force blows from Thor, Hulk, etc & not be driven into the ground like a fence post or swatted into the next county.

.

I think I'd represent this by allowing the user to apply resistance somehow

How about giving it temporary HP? Absorb up to X amount of damage per day.

I would just grant Resistance to all non-magical damage.

I would also make the shield non-magical and Unique, as well as change the return to the beginning of the wielder's next turn; opting for offense vs defense is the choice you make, when you decide to throw it.

Other than that, I think it is good as written in the OP.

I like the idea but it seems extremely powerful. I tend to prefer my magic items to add flavor to characters rather than be the focus of the character. With something like this its almost like the player is playing the shield with a person carrying it.

There should/could be some sort of damage reflection... ala Thor striking Cap out in the forest. My son suggests that it could be a reaction to having been hit by a critical melee based attack.

Taking the Defense action might add to the shield's power.

If you wanted to encourage a player to use the shield as a primary weapon, then give it some bonus for being wielded 'two handed'. You don't necessarily use two hands on the shield, but maybe you're focused on the shield to the exclusion of any other weapon. Using the off arm to balance yourself?

A good way to represent the resistance ability is to mimic the Shiels Mastery feat but for Constitution saves. Add it's defense bonus to Con Saves and use a reaction to negate the damage from a Con attack if you make your saving throw.

What about giving Disadvantage to the enemy's damage roll?

Cap's shield is a big help, but sometimes it's still a hell of a hit.

I thought it was going to be an 'adult' magic item...
