Wealth, and other optional rules for Nobility Campaigns

So a friend and I started a campaign which is focused on the party being part of the royal family.

Well, this makes things like Gold and Silver matter far less, and other things like that.

I was thinking about altering the old d20 Modern rules for wealth, where purchasing something incurs a dice roll to see if you can afford. If it's cheap enough, you can just buy it without making a dent, but if it is too expensive, it will reduce your bonus to your check. Something like that.

A) Does anyone remember how that rule worked, summarized? I can't find my old book. What was the scale for money to wealth score? Wanted to convert that to Gold somehow.

B) How could I adapt the rules for "Running a Business" detailed in the 5th Edition DMG to work with this rule to reflect making money from taxes, specifically to this feature?

C) any other ideas you can think of, besides wealth, that would need to be re-evaluated for this type of campaign setting theme? An example of this would be using the Warbands rules from Unearthed Arcana articles for large scale army battles, as well as a series of "behests" to assign elite soldiers similar to Assassins Creed's contracts, or the behest system from Final Fantasy CC: My Life As A King, and WoW:Warlords of Draenor's Garrison missions.

D) How could I encourage the party members to be more involved directly in certain matters, instead of just sending/paying someone else to do it to avoid direct danger? I can't just have assassins trying to murder them every mission (though it's a start). Perhaps some key plot device that requires their presense in certain places, like ES4: Oblivion's emperor bloodline storyline where there is something magically special about the royal family, etc. Or perhaps they are traveling to negotiate with another kingdom, and their travels could get them involed in a series of exploits where they don't have direct immediate access to their resources for a few missions.

Ideas? Comments? Trying to bounce ideas off of people? Anyone ever tried this before?

- An evil ritual which blasts the land was employed against the peasants in a certain province.  Only the True King (or his heirs) can focus the Ritual of Healing.  Which honks off the local druids no end.

- A particular Duke thinks that what the King is not in the building to witness, he doesn't care about - like treasonous plots.  Go visit the guy and stay for a month, would you son?

- Negotiations with another kingdom are almost completed.  Somebody important is needed to sign the document.  Visit the city and sign he treaty.  (Side-plot: make sure we got a good deal.)

- Floods along a certain river caused humanitarian distress.  Check on how the cleanup is going and make it look like the King cares enough to show up to help.

- Burghers in a city are having an 'election'.  Say nice things about the 'candidate' who is a friend to the King, and discourage being a friend to the other fellow.

- Bandits are bothering trade in a certain Duke's province.  He is very sick with a wasting disease.  Take his place, call out the feudal levy, and chase the bandits down.  Investigate vs deeper plots afoot.

- Attend the ceremony to collect taxes from a certain Free City, whose inhabitants grumble about paying us our due.  Be impressive, and encourage law-abiding behavior.

Edit: thought of two more things to do

How could I forget ?!

Bulfinch's Mythology includes chapters on the Knights of the Round Table and Charlemagne's Paladins, both of which are full of plot arcs waiting to be used.
