What do you think of these new D&D grid tiles.

I am curious about these. I just bought the Tact-Tiles, but am a little dissatisfied. They are nice in general. I now have seen these. They seem really well thought out, and much cheaper. What I like is that apparently you do not have to clean them between sessions, and they *seem* much lighter.

Overall, I am thinking of kicking in some money, as I would love a replacement for the mat. I am just wondering what people think about this?

Any other competing products that fit the bill? I am looking for some great game aids...

I think they look awesome. I will tell my friends about them.  I like that you can stack them. It also lets you 'pre draw' the dungeon and add tiles as they explore.

Wow, this is a really awesome looking product. I would absolutely love to have this simply for the fact that i could draw out a map on a tile right in front of me, instead of having to lean over everyone at the gaming table (we have very little space at our table). I think I'm just about sold on backing this and want to tell my group.

They appear pretty awesome, but I can't stand looking at the hex-shaped version since the grid on it is not oriented in the same fashion as the tile itself and that bothers me far more than it rightly should.

I like the cardboard foldable flip maps released by Paizo. You have two different sides with squares and they are light and easy to transport. The added bonus is you can write on them with permanent marker and the lines will stay on until you write over the lines with a dry erase marker. That is important when preparing a map ahead of time and not arrive with half the lines destroyed if you use dry erase.

I like the concept of magnetic boards represented in the kickstarter, and it will be important that they have some type of rubber material on the back so they don't move around. If they have the same permanent marker/dry erase marker feature like Paizo, then it will ultimately boil down to the price point.

If I could make a request, I would ask for two sided maps. Hex on one, grid on the other. Square shaped tiles.

From what I can tell, you *have* to so it that way, if you try and orient them the same, you can't get an even number.  The only way to make modular tiles is the way they did it.

Well, if you want Hex tiles, I'm pretty sure it could be done with square tiles.

So I decided to become a backer. Gettin' 10 tiles in the mail if this goes through. Can't wait to try em out.

As per usual, Aussies get screwed. And with our dollar tanking, this goes into the "too expensive" basket.

Hello!

Someone pointed us to this thread, and we thought we'd pop in and answer a couple of questions that may be lingering in someone's mind.

  1. Yes, we are doing square mats!
  2. Yes, permenant marker stays on until you want it to come off.  We use rubbing alcohol to remove it, but you can use another marker if you prefer.  (We run through our markers kinda fast, and since rubbing alcohol is way cheaper than markers, we prefer it.)
  3. @AaronOfBarbaria, that is a good design!  And at the end we were planning on asking people which one they prefer.  We didn't want to muck up the concept with options too early on.  The only problem with that design is: no center space in the tile.  That drove some of the people here crazy (they wanted a "middle" space) more than anything else, so for our prototype, we went with our design.
  4. For international shipments--- there are a lot of folks who are working with game / hobby shops.  If you have one of them contact us, we can send a larger shipment, and the shipping cost winds up being drastically reduced.  We wish we didn't have to charge anything for shipping.

If anyone has questions, you can always just message us directly.  We are happy to talk!

Hey, great to hear from you. Nothing gamers like more than folks making us feel important.

Great to see you coming to answer questions, that's very cool of a producer to do.

Hah  Glad I am making people feel important. :D

We're doing square grid on square mats, and hex grid on hex mats.  We like the way it scales!

We have done testing with bleach, by leaving it on overnight.  It worked just as well; we had no problems with it.  If that didn't eat through the top layer, I don't expect long term alcohol use will either.

And about the other design...you (plural)...are correct. :D  That is a center space I see.  We may alter it to this after all.  :D  Herpderp!  Although our mats are truly amazing, it's just us mortals in charge of manufacturing and stuff.  Thanks for the design help!

Just FYI, I think I see a problem with the proposed solution of the hexes (map hexes align with tile shape).

What you are presenting is a 10" tile. Your layout will work for a 4" tile, a 7" tile, a 10" tile, and a 13" tile. Otherwise you will have to have a vertex on the corner clipping two hexes. I still think it is a better solution, but it is not as clean as you present. Also, there is no center tile anymore if you do an 8" tile. Again, I think it is superior to the current design, but not ideal.

Also, a suggestion!

I know you are talking about terrain stickers (vinyl or otherwise). How about black, easily removable but attaches easily stickers in rectangle form. What can you do with them? You can mask your drawn tile when you put it on the table and expose only the part they can see. When they can see a new section, just remove the black sticker section on that area. Still not ideal, but allows you to have a little bit of the fog of war effect on the table. I like the terrain stickers, but I am much more likely to use the black stickers to mask out some sections of the map.

I actually purchased tact-tiles. I am not a fan of needing to clean them between sessions at all. I also had a 10' x 20' entry way on one side of the tile, and part of a massive room on the rest. I would have liked to have three of those rectangular stickers to mask out the rest of the tile until they opened the door into my intricately drawn grand chamber.

Just a thought...

Hex looks good, but for grid I'd just use the 2'x3' 1 inch graph paper from an office supply store as it's cheaper, you can pre-plot as many sheets as you want and keep them.
