I know the tarrasque gets the highest AC at 25.

What monster gets the 2nd highest AC and what is it?

What monster gets the 3rd highest AC and what is it?

Many of the ancient dragons have AC 22, and a marilith has AC 18 but gets 1 reaction per turn and can use it to parry for +5 AC against one attack

Not sure that's 2nd and 3rd highest... but it is probably not that likely that something has a 23 or 24 AC normally (i mean, I read all the way to Kraken before I got bored of looking, so it's possible... but meh).

For players:

Wizard 18 / Cleric 1/Fighter 1

20 Plate and Shield

+1 Defensive Fighting Style

+3 Plate Armor

+3 Shield

+5 Shield Spell (at-will, uses reaction, lasts until end of next turn, aka permanent)

+2 Haste

+1 Warding Bond

+1 Ring of Protection

36 AC

unlikely but possible.

Cleric one for plate armor seems like a loophole... but you can easily switch fighter and wizard.

Tiamat is 25.  That is probably what WotC is pegging as the max.  There is nothing preventing something like s Solar using a bracers and a ring of protection however.

Yep, at 30 AC an ancient red dragon still hits you on a 13+. It's only when you get +3 weapons and armor do things break down. An ancient red hits 36 AC only on a 19+. That is only 1/100 of the time if the wizard is using foresight.

Is that actually breaking down? The dragon can just grapple you and have all kinds of fun flying around with its new toy. AC isn't a universal defense, but you've invested everything in it...

Based on the Animated Shield preview, I am of the impression that magic shields will only add +2 to AC (like usual) and will instead provide the character some other special ability, such as using your reaction to gain resistance vs. area effect spells and the like.

In addition, there is no guarantee that you will ever see a suit of +1 plate armor let alone +3. This is entirely DM specific and as such you cannot base your character around such concepts.

The Roper is also AC20, and can restrain it's enemies (imposing disadvantage on their attack rolls).
