What is so forgotten about the realms?

I have wondered this.  It's called the Forgotten Realms.  It has a rich history of powerful wizards since before Netheril.  It's very well known in Realmspace and their are plenty of planewalkers from the realms.  What is so forgotten about it?

Ed Greenwood describes it in the intro of DM's Sourcebook for the original 'gray box' Forgotten Realms campaign setting boxed set:  (to paraphrase) A multiverse exists and travel between worlds was once common.  Over time however, that's all been 'forgotten'; things like dragons, vampires, and magic have become legends in our world.

I still prefer to call it the Forgettable Realms, because it's a very generic fantasy setting.

What's been forgotten about the setting is that once you open your copy of the book/box it becomes your world to do with as you please. That you are not a slave to company provided "cannon". Or bound by some ever evolving meta-plot that's not of your own groups making.

I generally use ALL my Forgotten Realms supplements, from v3.5 and 4E to get the sort of FR games that I want. 3e FR has some good, though over done, details that fill in most FR campaigns and 4E is great for pulling in ideas to work with in it's current form. I don't see any point in removing or ignoring certain things, espically when the setting as a whole has moved forward. I  think a majority of the old school fans would save themselves the trouble and move forward as well (whether that be stopping at X-date or just going full on with the new timeline, etc.).

It helps me to think of the different versions of the Realms as parallel worlds (close but not exact --makes the D&D multiverse a bit larger I guess).  Trying to reconcile the Spellplague version of the Realms with earlier edition stuff just ticks me off (so I don't do dat ).

Personally, I thought the Forgotten Realms jumped the shark with the whole Time of Troubles thing. I thought the core pantheon was too hodge-podge to make sense as a pantheon and was goofy around the edges, but I was able to forgive that about the setting. And then the ToT hit, and I just couldn't even... Untterly contrived, hamfisted, and unnecessary mess to explain away game mechanic differences between 1e and 2e. Soured me on the entire setting (except for Zakhara, which was great).

The older FR products were much better.  Check out the 1st or 2nd Edition stuff.

I can't play in the Realms.  There is just too much going on in them, much like a room that is decorated to be too busy. What's more there are a lot of FR diehard fans that always seem to expect certain adherence to the lore of the world or that things should happen certain ways.  It shackles a campaign to the background and it tends to overshadow the story that is progressing.

I am not sure I would say it is bland, there are certainly some places or areas that are very dry, but there are some that seem well put together as well.

I also don't understand why people are argueing with why Mecha does not enjoy the setting? Disputing the matter is not going to change any minds.
