| #1DaomSlayerApr 30, 2015 9:16:12 | I'm wondering which is stronger of the three Oaths published so far. I think devotion paladin is good for sacred weapon, if you're using a polearm and dual wielding it. Polearms are harder to find magic versions of in standard look tables, plus it stacks with great weapon master. But I'm wondering if the oath of enmity is remotely as useful, except for the BBEG. At most you get advantage on a round or two or attacks before the monster's dead, whereas sacred weapon on a polearm can help lots of hits land on lots of creatures, especially with -5 / 10 from GWM.
The nature paladin seems interesting too, for control. Plus the level 7 opportunity attack feature interacts nicely with polearm master's OA when enemies enter your reach, so you can theoretically avoid their attacks entirely if you have enough movement. That seems very powerful to me. Plus the damage resistance on spells. Plus being able to do ensnaring smite when you throw a handaxe to drop flying creatures, or even use ensnaring smite on the OA from polearm master to guarantee it can't follow you or even go towards hitting an ally instead. Seems like the nature guy is pretty good. |

What's the rest of your party? |
| #3DaomSlayerApr 30, 2015 14:47:37 | We have a blasty warlock, a cleric of light, a dual dagger wielding rogue, and myself, a dwarf paladin. I don't want to play a LG paladin so I'm looking for alternatives to the devotion paladin. I know the oath technically doesn't matter since there is no punishment for violating them, but I'd rather pick an oath that actually matches what I want my character to play like, so I'm looking for alternatives so that fluff matches crunch.
btw sorry for being rude in the other thread, it was uncalled for and I apologize. You were totally on topic and your advice was good, I don't know what came over me. Even though I often disagree with lots of game design debates, I shouldn't fall into old habits from the beta testing days when such arguments actually altered the outcome of the rule of the game we are playing.

The OotA Paladin deals a bit less damage but grants huge buffs to defenses (half damage from magic) and has better AoE with its channel divinity ability and spells like Moonbeam. |

That spell is great. JMO. |

The bonus spells for devotion are more geared towards healing and protection so fit. I wouldn't naysay devotion at any level because sacred weapon is an additional stacking attack bonus and immunity to charm is better than a bonus to the save. Bless plus sacred weapon overcome -5 to hit from great weapon master on multiple enemies early and often enough to be better than the advantage from vow of enmity on one target. If the OP doesn't like the tenets of devotion then I doubt he or she would like the tenets of an ancients paladin. Vengeance would be the recommendation I would make. Ancients is about mercy, forgiveness, joy, laughter, love, music, art, blah blah redemption blah blah promoting a better world and pushing back despair in the tenets. If the OP is looking for dark brooding paladins then vengeance tenets fit that better. |

Their aura prevents one of the biggest threats to a party, the bonus to hit from sacred weapon is the biggest DPR boost of the three, the permanent protection from evil means most of their enemies won't be hitting them much. |
