What level 1 Arcane spell would you choose to cast at will?

If you could have your character cast any level 1 Arcane spell, from the Sorcerer's, Warlock's, or Wizard's spell list, without components, and it scaled (as in you can cast the 1st level spell as a higher level spell, but it still counts as your 1st level spell at-will) as if you were a caster of your level, regardless of if you were one or not, what spell would it be, and why?

Spells don't scale with caster level, normally. Shield comes straight to mind for the bonus AC.

Ah I thought this was another of those "in real life for yourself" threads.  The last one was a lot of fun.

Anyway, Bless comes to mind.

Bless or hex if I was a fighter or oath of the ancients paladin.

Healing word, because no one would ever die. Unless two people were dying.

Healing Word and Hex are both arcane spells.

Booooo, no Bless. Faerie Fire, then. Or Dissonant Whispers.

For all of those nitpicking, it would be Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard spells.

Or those spells found in the Arcane Spell Deck if you buy the spell cards.

I don't understand how your spell level scaling is supposed to work. Assuming it means I get to cast the spell using the highest spell slot I would have had access to as a full caster I would take sleep because it would be awesome. Assuming it is a longwinded way to say I only get to cast it using a 1st level spell slot I would take shield.

Really it depends what you need it for.  Universally, shield is the best spell and only needs to use 1st level slots to be extremely effective.  +5AC is great scaling.

If your not a tank, and already have a use for your reaction then you could choose something else.

Bless is 2nd best and would be good if your a favored soul (arcane then).

My vote is for Shield. It scales well and is just as effective for a low intelligence character.

If i'm understanding the scaling correctly...

Armor of agathys.

Or Sanctuary, if that's allowed.

Or magic missile, especially if I can always cast it as a 9th level spell.

Actually no I'm going with Unseen servant. My apartment would be flawlessly clean all the time.

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't that just be a valor bard, combined with taking care to choose spells that fit the theme? What does a skald do that isn't already representable in 5e?

Not sure about the Skald thing, just dig the more Druidic focused Bard; altered spell list, etc.

Skalds aren't celtic anyway. Valor bards are supposed to cover the archetype,  and just taking the right skills and shared druid spells matches the concept well. The alternative is going all 1e style by 4 fighter, 2 rogue, and 14 druid levels.
