| #1JohnLynchJul 10, 2014 16:41:43 | I'm running a one shot of 5th edition at a local gaming day and making pregens. I decided to put them up to level 2. These are people who are quite likely to have never played D&D before so I wanted to ease up on the deadliness factor. For a home game with experienced players I'd definitely start at level 1, to help encourage caution and respect for the monsters.
what level are you planning on starting your 5th edition game at? |
| #2MechaPilotJul 10, 2014 18:08:38 | Level three, that way everyone starts with their subclass in effect. Also, it offers more of the "survivability is based on decisions and actions" that I like and less of the HP swingy-ness that I'm not overly fond of. |
| #3ssvegeta555Jul 10, 2014 18:13:00 | I'll be running the starter set at level 1 and when the Hoard of the Dragon Queen comes out, I'll start fresh with level 1 again. But depenind how the starter set goes, I might bump it to level 2 at the start of the Dragon Queen adventure. |
| #4ShiroikenJul 10, 2014 19:28:52 | I must admit I'm torn. I'm staring my campaign of with the Temple of Elemental Evil (T1-4). Part of me wants to do Level 1, because the adventure wants the PCs to be newbs. Part of me wants to start at Level 3, so that they can tackle the moathouse right away (without me having to tone it down). As it stands, I'm leaning towards Level 3, but with 0 XP. If I do start at level 1, however, I'm going to make the players choose their sub-class immediately (there are storyline reasons for this). |
| #5Tony_VargasJul 10, 2014 20:22:31 | If I want to start a campaign at level 1, I'll start it at level 3.
Though, at this point I've only signed up to run 5e for Encounters, and that only if there's enough for a table (3 is the official minimum), so it'll depend on the level of the next adventure. If it's 1st or 2nd, though, I'd be sorely tempted to bump to 3rd, especially if I have players new to gaming.

| #6Emerikol.Jul 10, 2014 20:39:12 | If I run it I'll start the group at first. |
| #7LucienderJul 10, 2014 20:43:17 | My group is at first level right now. When we finish this short adventure my brother will run the group through the Lost Mine of Phandelver and we'll be at level 1 with the pregens. |
| #8NoonJul 10, 2014 20:46:24 | I just realised in another thread posters were actually saying 'I'll start first levels with double HP! Cause swing monster!', rather than, just, like, starting at second level.
For a new campaign, starting at first - but some of the encounters players might want to continue their characters which are around seventh level. |
| #9LawolfJul 10, 2014 20:47:52 | One, and I will hate every minute of it. |
| #10ChaosmancerJul 10, 2014 20:51:46 | I'm planning on lv 3. I have a cool idea for a short campaign (which is all the college groups can handle) where the players are assigned to start a new branch of their mercenary guild on a new continent. Have to have at least a little expeirence to get that kind of job from the higher ups. |
| #11NicodaudelJul 10, 2014 21:12:52 | We almost always start at level 1 regardless of edition, so I don't foresee any change this time around. I know lots of people are concerned about PC fragility, but until I've seen the rules play as written, I'm not going to panic on that front. Eyeballing them, they don't seem any more fragile than PCs from past editions I've heavily DMed or played - though I don't know enough about 3.x or 4e to make any comparisons with what's been the more recent baseline expectation. |

| #14AaronOfBarbariaJul 10, 2014 21:32:21 | I will be starting a few campaigns at 1st, but also some at 3rd, and one in particular at 5th |
| #15sleypyJul 10, 2014 21:35:52 | I do mostly do short story arc, so I will start at level 1st, 5th or 7th. |
