What would you rather have, the sequel. 1d12; 2d6; 3d4?

So, if you had an attack that could deal a max of 12 damage, how would you rather roll it?  And why?

3d4. More consistant, less swingy. Also works nicer with Great Weapon Fighting. Also also, higher average (since while the maximum is the same, the minimum is higher).

If you asked me what I could choose: 1d12 (average 6.5), 2d6 (average 7), 3d4 (average 7.5), or 6d1, I'd choose... well I'd probably choose 3d4 because I like rolling dice, plus afformentioned reroll abilities. But I'd be torn between it and 6d1.

All the 1-2s, and an extra die (singular) respectively.

3d4.  I love my d4s.  They're the square type. and fun to roll.

Ohhhh pretty. Where'd you get them from?

3d4, definitely. Those little caltrops deserve to roll for something other than dagger damage now and then.

Note that 1d12 does 1-12 averaging 6.5, 2d6 does 2-12 averaging 7, and 3d4 does 3-12 averaging 7.5.

But I'd still take the 2d6 because I don't like rolling d4's.  They don't really "roll" they just sort of "plop".

Or even the d12.  I'll trade the lower average for the more frequent thrill of rolling a 12.  And I like d12s.

I'll go 2d6.  I play mostly clerics, so my feats and abilities are tied elsewhere. 2d6 give me enough likelyhood of not geting a 2, but also likely range from the standard deviation to get some high numbers from a flat dice roll.

Definitely 3d4 put that with the heavy weapons fighting style and get to rerolling 1s and 2s and a nice and high average damage.

I'll take 12d1, please.

And I get to re-roll all of them.

4d3s yup yup. With rerolls on 1 and 2. Every 1 and 2.

I would go with 2d6 despite the advantages of 3d4 because I have a hard time grabbing ahold of pyramid-shaped d4s.

If I could locate (and afford with pocket change) those pretty dice upthread, I could be persuaded to reconsider.

I like rolling 1d12 to get that big '12' once in a while, but I'll always worry that MY roll will be that '1' on the other side of the die.

I would take the d12. People already forget the middle and low rolls, so why not up the chance of the memorable high rolls?

I'd rather roll the 2d6.

I would not roll 3d4 because I don't care for the d4.  As others have mentioned, it doesn't really roll so much as it lands like bird droppings on your windshield.  If I had a d8 with one through four printed on it twice, or the d4s that Mistwell showed a pic of, then I might reconsider that position.

I would not roll 1d12 because I hate that thing.  It never stops rolling until it hits something or falls off the table, and I never feel like I've gotten a complete roll out of it because it never stops on its own.

Those really aren't the same at all.Yes, they may all have the same maximum number, but because the minimum number is raised the average damage is raised. The difference between 1d12 and 3d4 is the same as 1d10 vs. 1d12.

And, let's be honest-- does anyone really like rolling a 1 on their damage roll? Maybe if they have a massive enough damage bonus, they wouldn't care, but otherwise it sucks.

If all you care about is maximum damage, I will happily take 6d2. Take out a bunch of coins and flip them. Average is 9 damage right there, almost as good a rolling a 1d18.
