1d8 hit die |
| #2rampantAug 31, 2015 16:08:10 | ... Gonna ned some conceptual notes here. First of all is this a Vampire class or a vampiric class? I.e. does it make you an actual vampire or is it jus tmeant to make you LIKE a vampire? Secondly what are the core vampiric powers and what are the sub-class abilities? Thirdly, It's meant to be a warrior class correct? Might work better as a specialist or a magical class. |
| #3Macv12Aug 31, 2015 17:57:09 | CON+prof regen from level 2 seems high, plus Blood Drink. I wouldn't imagine a vampire retreating behind a tree to regenerate during a fight, they should have to steal that life force somehow. You might add the effect to Blood Drink, say it doesn't require spending HD when below 50% HP, or every landed attack restores HP equal to CON.
I like Blood Drink though. Could add some kind of "if the target can bleed" requirement.
You could also give weapon resistance relatively early. It would be an interesting kind of "tank" with all these features, able to take hit after hit with bare-chested-level AC and d8 HP and still be fine.
Capstone should probably be auto-resurrection if it's not killed by specific means.
Like rampant, I would make it at least a half-caster. Vampiric Touch, Polymorph, Misty Step, Conjure Animals, Find Familiar, etc. You could make those iconic things class features, but you can cram in a lot more options with spellcasting.
Darkvision at some point. I'd also consider an ability to ignore sunlight sensitivity, such a by spending a spell slot to ignore it for 10 minutes per slot level, or something. And a "bite a willing or helpless target as an action" ability to restore HD, possibly with the restriction that you don't recover HD on long rests otherwise. |
| #4Macv12Aug 31, 2015 18:17:42 | Some subclass ideas:
"Cursed Bloodline." Flavor text about slowly being driven feral by their curse, they have difficulty controlling it, they hold off on feeding until they can't stop it anymore, etc. Bloodlusty. Martial weapons, enhances damage, enhanced healing, some berserk effect that may cause them to attack non-enemies.
"Master Bloodline." Vampire who's accepted their condition and is in more control. Magic-themed. Cantrips, extra spells known (and I do think vampires should know spells instead of preparing), more mind control features.
"Monster," "Creature of the Night," whatever. Disfigured, more feral but not so much bloodlust. Stealth-oriented. Better transformation (?), extended darkvision/blindsight, enhanced ability to snag one person and drag them away, or just pin down a target and kill them quickly but leave the vamp vulnerable. Maybe a paralyzing bite. Kind of spider-like in that way. Might change Allure to Terror, but psychically drawing someone in to you before they see what you are would still be valuable to them. |
| #5YunruAug 31, 2015 19:03:10 | Literally about to dall asleep so this might not make much sense but the main intent was a transformation when at 1/2 health: old powers turning off and new powers kicking in. In that regard a "bloodied" (to use a 4e term) Vampire is supposed to be a more powerful character than an unbloodied one. The downside? Low HP risking you dieing while in the effective range and regeneration pushing you back out of your optimal range. |
| #6rampantAug 31, 2015 21:56:23 | Ok that's nice, not really sure where it's coming from, and I'll keep it in mind, but I need more than that to help you out.
It looks like you're going for a Warrior class so far, the radiant vulnerability indicates you're going for full vampire, as for core powers I'm seeing the blood drain and hints of a Vampire's powerful presence. I'd suggest predator, and thrall master for the two initial sub-classes.
Am I on track so far?
If you do go fo rthe casitng path I suggest somethign rather warlocky, I think thesmall number of oft repeated powers works better with vampire concept than the large list of limited usage powers the other casters get. |
| #7LuisCarlos17fSep 01, 2015 3:20:53 | "Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords" from 3.5 Ed had got a special pose and manevuer about to recovering hit points after a suceful attack. I suggest to use this power for a blood-drinking effect, without breaking the balance of power. |
| #8YunruSep 01, 2015 5:18:27 | Taken that onboard resulted in this interesting thing: http://1drv.ms/1LQTaXH |
| #9MechatarrasqueSep 01, 2015 8:08:16 | I always thought vampire would work as a sorcerer bloodline. High cha, makes sense storywise/mechanically (you get bit, get a new class), and most of the vampire powers have spell equivilents on the sorcerer spell list (maybe add children of the night, i.e., conjure animals to the spell list or make it a bloodline power). Shoot, if there was a shadow dragon bloodline, it would be 75% there all ready. |
| #10LuisCarlos17fSep 02, 2015 10:46:45 | Why not to try and testing a monster template classe, like the articles "Savage Progressions" from D&D web?
What if I get only the first levels of vampire class, but after I would rather another with more class features?
What about day and night? Or vampire is in a dungeons with a lot of monsters without blood to be drank (undeads, constructs, oozes..) |
| #11rampantSep 02, 2015 12:03:55 | Actually i think you can technically drain oozes, they are alive.
And no template classes, the LA thing has to stay dead, it was a gamble in 3e, and it's just flat not going to work in 5e, not with the way Levels and prof bonus and HD work. |
| #12YunruSep 02, 2015 13:33:33 | Someone mentioned template classes? |
| #13rampantSep 02, 2015 14:13:42 | Seriously don't go there.
The concept behind a 'monster class' is solid enough, the problem comes from mixing in LA and template Classes are all LA.
Anything that can't fit in a race description, and by nature the vampire thing transcends race, has to be paid for wih feats, background, or actual class levels becase that's what exists in the 5e framework. The 'lost levels' of LA would just do too many bad things to the game system, just like in 3e, only likely worse given how levels work in 5e.
Now one option would be to present the vampire as a short class of 5-10 levels instead of 20 and then simply use multi-classing to cover the rest. |
| #14Jared711Sep 02, 2015 14:41:13 | All the good stuff is at level 1 and 2. The abilities need to be spread out. Such as allure should be at a higher level.
You should get a bite and claw attacks. Bite attack should be able to drink blood. I would consider some partial spells at higher levels such as a 1/3 caster with bard spell list. Then you don't even need allure.
Many abilities can be mimiced by spells such as vamperic touch, regeneration, etc.

| #16LuisCarlos17fSep 03, 2015 2:01:42 | An old idea by me about monster classes is monster traits with a game mechanic like incarnum soulmelds. I love the idea of a class what can "buy" monster traits spending "points of mutation".
And my suggestion is a limit for the "blood pool", I mean the PCs would need a time to digest the blood. I remember when I played Diablo II with a barbarian I had got a special skill to search enemies' corpses to find lots of healing potions.
* Oozes are living beings, but without blood, and even too acid to be eaten.
* Could vampires drink troll blood, or from another creatures with regenation powers? For example the werebeasts.
* Why not to create a 5th Ed of Vryloka race (from 4th Ed "Heroes of shadow", with the option of adding levels of racial parangon class (a concept from 3.5 Unearthed Arcana)? |
