I've been laughing since reading that announcement because I had the random thought that the reason the report comment button has stopped working recently is to let this place burn itself to the ground to make sure that by the time it is shut down nobody is going to miss it.

Wow, definitely not what i expected. This place has been around for a pretty long time (early 2000's), and back in the day i was fairly active around here (mostly stopped around the time 4E released and the whole gleemax fiasco). More recently, I've mostly just been a lurker, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to miss it to some degree. Wizards will be losing a lot of great content. I, also, have no plans to move to enworld (never been a huge fan of enworld).

So, i guess this is so long everyone!

Iv'e been hanging at geek and sundry a lot lately. Maybe they will start a Dnd table top rpg community forum their.

I'm actually pissed about this, I have very little experience in running or mirrorring or whatever, but is there a way to copy the forums here and host them elsewhere? Even just as an archive? There are sooooo many handbooks and references I've bookmarked and used over the years that will no longer be hosted. Likewise, these are the only forums I've used, trying to track down things elsewhere will be a pain, not to mention that these forums give a lot of good feedback on things (they give a loto f bad feedback too, but that is not going to change by outsourcing them). Is this really where D&D needs to cut a corner? I can't imagine largely text-driven forums and the handful of moderators needed to run them is such a resource sink that they need to be deleted, likewise, I can't imagine that they really need every possible hand on deck with the glacial release schedule they've been doing, most of which has already been outsourced to 3rd parties. Finally, what about Wrecan's stuff and other's who can't or won't transfer info over but who made great and lastingly-valuable contributions to the community?!

Someone knows about a forum in which I can have demi-decent conversations about RPG design? That includes trying to avoid labels like “4venger” or “grognard” or such.

Honestly I am seeking a new forum to participate for some time, but I’m not very good at looking for one, and honestly there are too many forums; I cannot just randomly pick one and keep trying to find one by chance. The forums I have participated kinda fell from the skies. Perhaps 13th Age ones, but really…

Anyone can recommend me a good RPG forum? That would be nice.

I will be at EnWorld.

I hope to start moving over at least the Character Guides to the Character Builds and Optimization forums at EnWorld.  Not sure how to go about doing that.  I want to maintain the credit for whoever created each guide, but it will have to be posted under my user name, so I may have to play with some formatting.

This is pretty sad news. Personally, I do not really use the other social media avenues they reference in their announcement. Further, I do not think those venues provide the breadth and depth of discussion that forums so.

This will result in the destruction of a tremendous amount of game related content. This includes CharOp handbooks, fan created settings, indexes and aggregates of content on other sites and on Wizards own site, art work, etc. The forums were like a massive searchable library of game related content and they are not just closing the collection -- they are shutting down all access to it. This seems like a major loss to me.

It also simply turns off one piece of the D&D community. There are other venues out there (EN World, RPG.net) but I can not see it as anything but a negative. And I don't think Twitter or Reddit are comparable substitutes.

For those who can't link to the announcement:

The Community Ranger Forums will be shut down on October 29. Thanks to all who participated over the years!

Choosing to retire a former foundation of our community was not an easy decision, but we feel that we must adjust our communications structure to reflect where conversations about rangers and ranger variants are taking place.

Social media has changed significantly over the last ten years, and discussions about rangers aren't exclusive to company-hosted forums. The majority of ranger conversation takes place on third-party websites (such as Rangeit, Tracktter, Rangebook, and Ramblr, and many other fantastic community-run websites), and it is up to us to evolve alongside our player who like rangers.

We encourage past and current users to retrieve any information about rangers you want to retain from the Community Ranger Forums for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Non-Ranger Game. The shutdown will occur on October 29, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. PT. We want to provide enough time for our forum members to move their ranger content, and we recognize that given our forum's vibrant ranger base and extensive history of complaining about beast companions, this may take time. Any ranger information still on the forums on the cut-off date will be deleted.

Thank you to all of our past and current ranger forum users. You helped build our ranger community into what it is now, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you on our many active ranger platforms.

Rangers.

I've decided to try putting aside my prior dislikes of enworld and give the place a chance to grow on me... but it turns out I already made an account with my normal username and forgotten the email account attached to it so I can't reset the password, and have also already made an account with my usual backup username and used a password other than the one normally associated with it, so now I am waiting 15 minutes before being able to get signed in and change my password.

I guess thems the breaks for having to have made a user account to download something months/years ago and never signing into it again.

At any rate, that means people that care to will find me on Enworld by the name of Sirrug (that's one word, I'm not some kind of carpet knight) once I get things in order.

Sorry to hear that they're shutting down these forums. As much as people can troll this place, I liked reading the discussions about new content and reading what people home brew straight from the product source forums. Never tried EN World. I guess it's the next place to go at this point. I honestly don't get why there would be a need to shut the forums here down though. Yes there are plenary of other social media outlets, but this one has a legacy. Maybe that doesn't matter, but to a business built half off of nostalgia you'd think there'd be some sort of respect for it.

Well guys, I'll miss reading the discussions here, and all the new ideas you guys come up with. I will also miss having this place be here for when I want to discuss how a rules is perceived to work etc. bummer...

So instead of fixing the quality of the forums, they decide to shut down entirely? AND to delete all the content? Wow, that is a seriously dumb move. I mean, I get that they want to embrace social media, but I don't think that forums are obsolete yet either. There is room for both. Why they would choose to abandon ship instead of fixing it is beyond me.

I also stopped posting regularly here a while ago. Every now and then I came back to see the same trolls. So I guess at least we get to burn some trolls along with the decent content here. Oh well.

Now I mainly talk D&D on Facebook. It's good for short convos, at least. But once a post gets too big, it's basically dead. Maybe that's a good thing. I'm Ramzour on most other forums. I have an EnWorld account but I never post. I might frequent there more often in the future, though.

If anyone would like to keep in touch, PM me here before the shut down and we'll exchange details.

Until then, hugs and critical hits,

~Wayne

Twitter and facebook are not a communications medium they're a content delivery medium.  WotC may not be present on these forums but the community is and we can't exactly have in depth conversations through twitter and facebook.  All this does is push the DnD (and Magic) community to other places and further cut WotC off from it's fans.

I'm not a hugely active member of either community, but I'm over on enworld with the same name.  I'll see everyone over there.

It's actually a little ridiculous that they're closing these forums down. So many organizations (or even RPG podcasts) support their own forum. You don't get the same thing out of Facebook and Twitter at all. I'm not a fan of Facebook. I have it, but I prefer a community that is actually dedicated to the subject, which here it's for D&D. There was all of this talk about fixing the forums and now they're just deleting them? This sucks.

Are they just doing this to save money?

Regardless of what you think of them, these forums are a bit of an institution.  I made my account here a dozen years ago, and since then have seen content vanish occasionally -- apparently, pretty much everything that I ever posted, in fact, including a lot of community work to set up hailscape.com years ago, which was a little sad to see disappear -- but mostly it's been a decent place.  I'm sorry to see it go, and wish WOTC good luck with their new strategy for engaging with their audience.  The positive community here years ago was definitely a factor in my later engagement with other forum communities, including RPG Crossing which I now manage.  So... thank you.

Okay, based on what's in this thread so far I've created an EN World fourm account (Grazel just like here).

I'm also talking with a friend and may start up a new D&D community forum on his servers, as well as a wiki to tie into it. I'll post more about it once I know more and if the logistics work out. If you have any input into what features you want on a forum and wiki send me a PM, might as well build up something decent if starting it up fresh and since I likely will have direct source-code access (and while not the best coder I can do some stuff).

If it doesn't work out I'll most likely just shift over to EN World, and of course my 5e Indexes file won't go away since it's on dropbox and I'll maintain it and keep it shared even without forum presence to announce updates to it (which I try to do shortly after each major product release via book or pdf, though not usually on a singular UA article).

Pos over on ENworld from an ex cimunity lead here. Paraphrased. The forums have been going down hill since 2007. THe 1st exodus was with Gleemax followed by the edition wars over 4Es release. 4E being canned caused another exodus along with the D&D Next playtest.

Most people seem to be migrating over to EN World, a few scattered over other sites, and it looks like some might prefer to start in a new and organized forum dedicated mostly to D&D. I would be lying if I said I had short-term plans to introduce a community forum in my website, but I can tell you I'm quite experienced at it.

Before I go any further I'd like to mention I'm the founder of DungeonChannel.com, an entirely free website that aims to help DMs and Players get the most out of their campaigns. We welcome anyone who wants to help out with their Guides, Stories, Insight and anything you can imagine.

While I'd love to be able to migrate WotC's database over and make it easier for everyone, I highly doubt that's a reasonable course of action. What I can offer though are the following two options:

  1. If there seem to be enough interested people in starting with this new project, I can most likely set the basics up by the end of the week so the content can start being migrated. With lots of improvements on functionality and graphics coming soon after to prioritize the content when we're this short on time.
  2. If you'd like to avoid moving to a new forum and blog your content instead, we're always looking for writers to join the team and post in their free time.

No help will be needed to complete the technical aspects of the forum, but we always appreciate the feedback and enthusiasm of anyone who would like to contribute either posting as a member of the community or as a moderator to keep things in order.

I'm keeping this post short, but of course any questions, comments or suggestions are most definitely welcome on this thread or via the contact form on DungeonChannel.com if you'd like to reach me directly.

Cheers,

Nick

Man I been coming here like religiously for a few years now.  Its to the point that when im hyper focused on my phone my fiance knows im reading or writing about D&D.  Lets just say I've heard, "You can D&D later.." quite a few times over the past few years.  I'm pretty bummed that this forum won't be here anymore.  Reading and posting here is, except for some breaks here and there, a part of my daily routine.  I'm getting up in the age bracket and with that comes a general business amongst my friends, as such some of my only D&D interaction has been through these forums because getting everyone together for a regular game is somewhat impossible.  In effect we've all been playing D&D for years.  We make characters, and we throw them into scenarios (even if its just a white room), and its sad to see those games end here.  I hope to see everyone again someday down the road.  I'll make an account on enworld but I can't guarantee I'll be as active there.  The name will be Orlax.  For everyone I don't see there: May you roll high, and game often!

edit: of course I'll also be hanging around here till the end but I figured I'd lodge my goodbyes now.

My moods right now on this announcement:

Wonder why they're shutting it down? I kind of see why, the place has seen less and less traffice over the years, especially after Gleemax, but just seems like an odd decision altogether.

This is a bit late in posting, but I thought I'd welcome everyone over to the Fantasy Grounds forums as well. Our focus is mostly on things related to running it online or using the Fantasy Grounds software for different game systems at the table as a digital aid. Regardless of that, we have a number of sub-forums set aside for various game systems and one for most of the different Wizards of the Coast game systems.  Even if you are not using FG or running a digital version, you are welcome to participate there. The only thing we ask is not to advertise directly competitive products on the site.

I will, I guess be migrating to ENWorld as that seems to be where the majority of people are going from here. My handle there is now BozzNugg, I mention OskarOisinson in my bio. I will be trying to get as much primary material off this site as I can before the shutdown, though, unfortunately, I probably won't be able to get a lot of the comments :-(

I guess I'm gonna try EN World and theRPGsite. Neither seems very welcoming of us, though. Well, theRPGsite just seems to have people that have bad experiences here, so they're probably fine.

Hey everyone.

Like so many others, I'm disappointed that WotC is shutting down this forum. I've not posted a lot on here, but I've been around a very long time.

I see lots of other forums opening up and welcoming people. Bleah though. I'm not a fan of EnWorld either.  I belong to some of the other sites, but again...I tend to be a quiet reader vs a vocal poster.

How about a new community forum? It gives everyone a change to start fresh.

I have a website I've had since 1999 and it's not being used for anything now or for the foreseeable future. It has a Xenforo forum on it that's currently empty.

We can pick some reputable volunteers from here, make them mods and rebuild the community there.

Anyway, jut an offer and though for those others - like me, that aren't thrilled about other options.

And jut an FYI, my site used to be host to some of my gaming guilds and things (like my roommate and I ran a UO shard for about 4 years), but health, age and interests have pretty much stopped all that.

Hi

As the owner, I'd like to add my own website to the list of possible websites that may be useful to people here looking for new communities. What I offer is a place where you can host your creations for free. By creations, I mean any content or resource you have created, and would like to host online so anyone can benefit from it. We cover all D&D editions, as well as Pathfinder RPG.

Some examples of user created content currently hosted at ADnD Downloads:

https://www.adnddownloads.com/en/resource/current-standard-character-sheet
https://www.adnddownloads.com/en/resource/bloodedge
https://www.adnddownloads.com/en/resource/trouble-at-troublewater

The website is my own personal project, but it's been online for over 15 years, and get a lot of visitors everyday. Some resources have been downloaded over 5000 times in the las 6 months, so I genuinely think it serves as a good way to promote your creations.

Please come visit, feel free to contact me if you have any question or suggestion. Thanks for reading!

Yeah I'm not a fan of how EN World is laid out currently, the 5e forum is way too cluttered right now and really needs sub-forums like we have here to be properly searchable and readable. I'm not a fan of the overall UI of the site either in many regards.

I'm still looking into starting a new D&D specific forum community and am actually waiting on a response from WotC about some legalese grey areas so I don't do something that'll get the site in trouble with their legal staff. It'll likely start as just a forum but if traffic picks up and as time and volunteers come I'm hoping to expand it to include other features as well. I do plan on having an Underdark section too that's unmoderated and 18+ where the trolls and drama types can go, or just those who want to have a more adult conversation. I have some other ideas but will hold on to them until I have more of the logistics worked out. In the mean time I can be PM'ed here or on EN World (also as Grazel) if you have suggestions, questions, and what have you. Of course my 5e Indexes isn't going anywhere as it's hosted on dropbox but until I've made some more posts on EN World I can't share it over there.

I'm not really okay with the forums going down. Even though I rarely post, these forums were my primary source of info on dungeons and dragons. I don't see how facebook, twitter, or reddit can replace an official forum. It is what it is, though. I suppose ENworld is the closest thing we have to an official D&D forum now?

This is... kind of painful. This was the first forum I ever joined, back in 2012, and though I may have made a bit of a donkey of myself at first, I blame it on being only thirteen.

Now that this will no longer be a thing... it hurts. I mean, sure, there are other sites- and I'm on some of them- but most of them are focused more on RPGs in general, rather than specifically on D&D with a side of other.

This hurts.

"...appy-polly-loggies..." *said like Alex/Malcolm McDowell in influences*, I was very high the other night...being drunk (among other influenses) and abusive, it's been an interesting 10-year trip, here's the deal (...look it up...):

2005: I was Baby Samurai.

200X: I became Steely Dan (Weather Report, Vic Ferrari, and some others I can't recall, once again, in an altered state...remember that film: Altered States?)

200X: Brock Landers (co-pilot being, Chest Rockwell...I mean, is that not an amazing name a man can be called...Chest.).

Here is the outrageous irony, I can, swear on the souls of all, that I came up with the 4th Ed Avengers (later mauled into 4vengers), and then, came the "H4ater" term, that posters such as Tony Vargas keep perpetuating in their continuing, bitter, veteran, cold edition war.

I would like to say my goodbyes as well to this forums.

I know the feeling of moving from forums to forums as well. Saying goodbye to friends and never seeing them again.

And how it like to more on to more newer games after the community from the older ones died.

I have many memories of this place. I remember the flame wars of 4e as it slowly get toss under the busy by WotC.

I remember playtesting 5e and being there from the beginning to finish.

From a fellow nomad of the internet, I wish you all good luck on finding a new forum to call home!
