| #1JimjamsOct 26, 2014 16:09:48 | This is something that has apparently come from a WotC Rep. Once the second part of "Rise of Tiamat" is released, Wotc will be taking an EXTENDED break from DnD products.
Is anyone able to confirm this? |
| #2AaronOfBarbariaOct 26, 2014 16:24:16 | I can only provide the counterpoint that WotC has both the DMG and a DM screen listed for release, both after the second part of Tyranny of Dragons, which happens to be titled Rise of Tiamat. |
| #3AldenteOct 26, 2014 16:33:42 | Well there's this thread: http://community.wizards.com/forum/product-and-general-dd-discussions/threads/4129566 |

| #5JimjamsOct 26, 2014 17:10:04 | Ok thank you I did think this was strange. |
| #6frothsofOct 26, 2014 17:29:53 | Well, the next adventure path is a third party creation, just like Tiamat, so in that sense its sort of true. There is nothing announced by WOTC past the DMG and the screen. |
| #7dafrcaOct 26, 2014 18:26:25 |
|
| #8frothsofOct 26, 2014 18:47:09 | I dont take it that way. I think they want to be careful and deliberate and not flood the market like with 4e. I just hope they get the mags rolling in the new year. |
| #9ankiyavonOct 26, 2014 18:53:01 | I think by far the most likely explanation is that a representative said they had not yet announced any content after whatever date.
And then the internet misinterpreted and rewrote it into THE SKY IS FALLING. |
| #10GrazelOct 26, 2014 19:02:45 | While I don't think the WotC staff will be doing much on books they aren't really "taking a break" from 5e. They'll likely still be editing and overseeing the licensed 3pp that will release adventure paths and their companion splatbooks (like the upcoming revamp of Temple of Elemental Evil under a new name).
It may just mean there's not going to be any more WotC directly produced books for 5e for a while but I suspect they'll be working on stuff for eventual release. They have made it clear though that we won't be seeing a flood of books (WotC or other contracted company) for 5e like we got in 3.x and 4e. The goal with 5e is to make it sustainable and a flood of books on a tight schedule lessens sustainability because it causes rule bloat and too much brokenness. I think the current design scheme of the 3 core books, adventure paths with an accompanying "companion" book (aka splatbook mini-PHB) is a better option, then as needed other module/option and themed setting-specific material (manual of the planes, campaign setting, etc.) is a better way to go as this opens options instead of creating a rulebook grind. |

| #13tallric_kruushOct 26, 2014 19:37:01 | Can any source be linked for this? I don't doubt it, particularly, but I'd like more info if it's available.
What would be on the release horizon, realistically? They already said no campaign settings are currently in the works. The team is so small, at this point, that most are probably focused on the DMG and/or collaborating on the Elemental Evil adventure path (bleh!). (I won't even consider that product line truly "official" until I see it on Amazon with a price next to it, or read a real announcement.)
If no jobs were lost to this "extended break", then it would be safe to assume they'd be working on future products of some sort. Products take time to go from concept to sale, and the D&D team is pretty small, so an extended break makes a sense. It would be a bummer, though, since 5E seems to be doing pretty well, based upon what little I've seen and read. I fear that any traction gained would be lost without regular support. Many people on the fence would likely go back to their abundantly supported Pathfinder, or play something else with ongoing product support. |

| #18TheNovaLordOct 27, 2014 2:30:05 | It's a good idea. Concentrate on 1 or 2 high quality, Canon, core......and let 3pp do adventure paths etc. If every adventure will be 2 HB books that cool with me. |
| #19Granville7482Oct 27, 2014 3:09:16 | They made so much money on the first two books.... where is that money going to now? |

| #21JimjamsOct 27, 2014 5:04:36 | One other little tit-bit the rep also apparently told a store owner that the Dungeon Master screen had been cancelled. This is all 3rd party info, I don't wish to alarm those into thinking the sky is falling, just to get some clarification if possible. |

| #27talsharienOct 27, 2014 9:39:00 | Wizards shipping the stuff out to 3rd parties is just how RPG stuff is working at the moment. The open license for d20 put thousands of books out there and there are some really good writers about. With outfits like Kobold Press getting involved with D&D that cannot be a bad thing.
RPG's need to be written by gamers for gamers. |

| #30ShadoWWWOct 27, 2014 14:21:05 | In this moment I have more than enough materials I need for a year long campaign. When I get used to all those rules, I may need more, but at this moment I'm fine.
That said, I really love 5e PHB and MM and looking forward to DMG. |
| #31ChakravantOct 27, 2014 15:18:09 | This seems both accurate and a vast misinterpretation of what was actually said. All this really means is that WotC is moving away from direct product creation and expanded rules supplements. Mearls has been talking about the latter for well over a year, although many fans were hoping for an Unearthed Arcana like supplemental book before this actually took place. This is just bad wording/bad spin on old information, with the possible exception of the DM's Screen. |
| #32ElfcrusherOct 27, 2014 17:16:29 | The One Ring by Cubicle 7 is an outstanding game, truly one of the best RPGs I've ever played/owned/read, and the core rules and most of the supplements have been written by outside contractors, while managed and edited internally
i don't think that production model is necessarily a bad one. |
| #33frothsofOct 27, 2014 18:09:05 | Especially considering a lot of the third parties are ex-TSR/WOTC like Winter and Rich Baker |
| #34ChakravantOct 27, 2014 18:21:04 |
|
| #35frothsofOct 27, 2014 18:24:01 | Well, Winter said Hoard had so many issues partly bc they were writing it based on constantly shifting rules to have it ready for release. I expect a tighter product for the elemental line from Sasquatch (Baker). |
| #36frothsofOct 27, 2014 18:25:25 | Keep in mind Baker wrote the starter set adventure too, and its pretty good in my estimation |
| #37ChakravantOct 27, 2014 18:33:37 | My worry is more about campaign setting specific feats, classes, and races, and how they will play with each other. Will a Thri-Kreen be more powerful than a Celadrin is more the question I'm talking about rather than an omission or revision in an adventure. In making one's own campaign setting it helps to have all the available races on roughly the same level, balance wise. If one has to hunt through each book and review each option manually, that could get tiresome really quickly. |
| #38frothsofOct 27, 2014 18:37:59 | I tend to agree w u. I find most third party material on those lines to be garbage. Except for OSR stuff. |
| #39ZardnaarOct 27, 2014 18:45:29 |
|
| #40frothsofOct 27, 2014 18:46:37 | Agreed. I think its a nice little adventure. |
| #41ZardnaarOct 27, 2014 18:49:23 | I have run it or been in that adventure 3 times now and completed it twice. Ordered HotDQ and was not to impressed when it arrived. Seems odd 3rd party making a worse adventure than WoTC esicially since HotDQ had good authors on it.

| #42Regin_VargtassOct 29, 2014 12:07:50 | DM Screen will be published 20 January according to the product page. |

| #45PsikerlordOct 29, 2014 14:59:25 | Imo LmoP is a pretty average adventure. I have not really seen Hotdq.
The previews of the Goodman Games 5e adventures fate of the 3 sisters and glitterdoom on the other hand, both look very excellent indeed. If Goodman games support 5e I'll be perfectly content. |
| #46MechaPilotOct 29, 2014 16:15:40 |
|
| #47setiOct 29, 2014 16:52:58 | I really don't care what publisher logo is on it, I just want D&D to be D&D ie: lots of options you can take or leave. Psionics, more races/sub-races, classes/sub-classes, settings, etc. If the layout, writing, design and art is on par with (or better than) the 3 core books, I see no problems. I just don't want to see sloppy rules, xeroxed art, and lack of support with settings, eratta, and hit or miss published adventures mostly focused on FR.
That being said, I will not panic until WotC officially says this is what they are doing. I'd be a mistake, IMO...Settings and adventures could work 3rd party, but 'official' rule books really should be WotC's D&D team (MM2, Psionics, PHB 2, Manual of the Planes, etc.) I think these setting neutral rulebooks are needed to make 5e a fully flushed out edition of D&D. Right now, even with 3 core books and 2 free PDFs, it's still a 'basic' edition...Compared to every other edition in the game's 40 year history. I do agree that there doesn't need to be 2e, 3x, and even 4e levels of book glut, but still.
Frank Darabont apparently had to come out on twatter or whatever to tell internet panicked fans of The Walking Dead that the whole show is not a 'Rick Grimes coma dream'. |

| #52arnwolf666Oct 30, 2014 3:52:06 | I can throw in a Paladin, Ranger, Bard or Gnome and it is still D&D. But people playing Kenki Fighter 2/Ranger 2/Green Mineral 3/Shadowblaster 2/Barkmancer 4 is not D&D to me. |
| #53arnwolf666Oct 30, 2014 3:53:29 | Basically you need to be able to make a character in 5 minutes without a Character Builder Software and be found in the next room as a prisoner or it's not D&D to me. I say most of this in complete jest and should never be taken too seriously. |

| #56GwathirOct 30, 2014 6:15:52 | Didn't WOTC send out a survey a month or so ago about something that looked like Forgotten Realms prestige classes / paragon paths?
Wouldn't this suggest that they are working on the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting?
Also, there are no novels on the horrizon for Ed Greenwood, I would also see this as a possible clue that he is having a large part on the upcoming FRCS.
Just speculating at this point. |

In fact I was disappointed when reading it, however running the adventure has proven quite different. Someone mentioned on this thread that they didnt like it and more power to them , but if you have only read it, consider giving it a chance. You already spent the money and hopefully you will be surprised. In either case, happy gaming. |
| #63pukunuiNov 03, 2014 16:15:13 | Regarding the official DM screen, Mike Mearls had this to say on reddit a few hours ago: "The DM screen comes out in January. It has all the relevant tables, summaries of conditions, and so on. Since 5e is fairly light, it also has room for stuff like random name generators, things that can be handy for a DM to use during a session." |
| #64ShasarakNov 03, 2014 16:45:22 | Heh, random name generator. |

And you know people are going to want more customization options for everything, from races to class features. |

| #78setiNov 06, 2014 20:47:03 | I do prefer a 'mature' game. (in the sense that lots of options are available. Psionics, class/sub-class race/subrace options, feats...) I like to edit down, not homebrew up. Ideally, at least.
I do have my own homebrew world/setting, but I still borrow a lot from official settings, of course. But, I can always go back to older resources for fluff inspiration. I do want/need concrete 5e rules for things like warforged, some tech, psionics, etc. to really dive into 5e and love it.
I have to admit, though...Even though I haven't seen the DMG, I do like how much 5e gives you with the PHB and the MM. Much better than previous editions. 4e was great, but not until it had 3 PHBs, 3MMs (and the Dark Sun creature catalog) out. Oh, and all those power source optional books. Then, you had a full game with more than a table would, or could, ever use in one campaign.
