Not sure if this is viabale RAW. Here and on ENworld the trend seems to be max out your primary ability scores and then take an interesting feat or two. Or you can not use feats and just take stat buffs.
But I am wondering what happens if you take a no stat buff game and make feats mandatory. Pre 3.0 your stats did not increase at all short of wish spells and certain classes such as the 1st ed Cavalier.
What feats start to look better if the DM rule that you had to take them and no stat buffs (apart from feats).

| #3ParaxisAug 08, 2014 19:36:35 | All the feats that give +1 to a stat and some other effect, instantly the one that does that and gives you proficiency in the related save comes to mind.
I would want to be able to purchase a stat higher than 15 if you used point buy at the start too.

| #7LawolfAug 08, 2014 19:51:40 | I think a better solution is to have all feats grant a +1 to an ability score in addition to their other effects. This way, you can start gaining interesting feats as you level, while also increasing your effectiveness. |

| #15JohnLynchAug 08, 2014 20:17:54 | I'd be willing to give it a shot. I'm recreating some LFR characters and they sometimes start with 14 in their primary stat. This would have been unthinkable in 3rd and 4th. I don't know what the ramifications are in 5th ed. It may be fine at low level but become unplayable at higher level in which case I'd be more pigeonholed. I'd either have to select races with a bonus to their primary stat or eat a feat that adds +1 to it.

| #16pukunuiAug 08, 2014 20:22:03 | I'd be up for that.
I have to say, though, when I first saw your thread title, I thought you were talking about playing a game where all you get are feats, no class features. That would be a bit bizarre, though. |
| #17WuzzardAug 08, 2014 20:27:52 | I'd play a game of no feats, not stat boost, 3d6 in order, take what you get, now imagine your character.
Of course, then I'd expect secret magic tomes that increased stats hiding on bookshelves in a chaotic gnome illusionist's tower dungeon, magical pools that grant strange abilities, and a deck of many things left haphazardly on a rickety wooden table in an otherwise abandoned room. |

| #19tehsquirrelyAug 08, 2014 20:50:04 | Honestly I feel like the +1 stat is sort of boring. I couldn't see myself not taking a feat, plus I know my groups are going to rolling stats because fun > balance and random stats are fun (for us at least). Granted there aren't a ton of feats yet and most characters probably wouldn't have more than 2 or 3 that they'd realistically want. |
| #20knightserpentAug 08, 2014 21:02:23 | I would also give it a try.
That said, I have a question about the Alert feat. Does it mean that you can only be sneak attacked if you have an additional enemy next to you in addition to the rogue? |

| #22FitzTheRukeAug 08, 2014 22:22:17 | I'd rather play with Feats than Stat-bumps, actually. I'm not AGAINST Stat-bumps, I just find them boring. So I'd be fine with allowing the +1 bump feats in an all-feats game. Might make them a littlem more desirable to have them be the only way to get your stats up.

| #24AaronOfBarbariaAug 09, 2014 17:24:23 | I would not like to be in a situation where I was required to take a feat rather than an ability increase at every option.
There just aren't that many feats that I feel "belong" with any of my character concepts... so I'd end up taking the 1 or 2 feats that actually interested me for a parituclar concept, and then just be taking all the generic booster feats like Tough, Durable, and Resilient regardless of my character concept, and that seems really boring to me, while instead raising ability scores that I use frequently seems worth doing to me. |

| #29ClockworkNecktieAug 09, 2014 18:47:19 | I can assure you that I will be playing this way with almost all my pcs, even if nobody else at the table is... |

| #36draegnAug 11, 2014 7:43:06 | No. I would rather play skills only. |
| #37spelleyAug 11, 2014 7:59:48 | Honestly, I'd try a Feats only setting, and have Feats require specific training/RPing. Would fit well in a sandbox/simulation-style game. You rarely would significantly increase/decrease your physical/mental prowess, you would more likely learn how to do new things better. |
| #38Steerpike84Aug 11, 2014 9:51:03 | Yes. Hate the assumption that each character will have 20 in their prime stat.
Also, this is basically necesary if you want to roll stats. Otherwise, rolling low in your prime stat has simply equates to a character with fewer feats, and that's no fun.
What you might consider trying is having stat boosts give +1 to two scores only. That way, people can boost their prime stat if they're really dedicated to it, but not every rogue will be the same level of agility and not every wizard will end up equally intelligent. |

| #40KarnosAug 11, 2014 11:36:33 | I'd try it, but I do not think I would like it. Just an unneccesary limitiation which would end up making characters more similiar and less interesting overall. |
