Hi everyone,

In the interest of getting some more conversation going in these new forums, I thought I'd ask what people are planning on playing for their first official 5e characters.

I suppose my first official 5e PCs will just be updated versions of my playtest characters*, since both of my D&D groups are in the middle of ongoing campaigns. I'm also hoping to get back into the DM's seat once one of the campaigns finishes, so I'm not sure when I'll get the chance to make a new PC (unless, of course, one of my current ones dies).

What are you looking forward to playing first?

Cheers,

Jonathan

*Currently I'm playing a lightfoot halfling rogue/bard/sorcerer and a forest gnome rogue/warlock. I'm enjoying them both a lot.

I'm totally going to try out a fighter :P They may be simple, but being able to get 2 or 3 attacks with an action, supa sweet!

Dragon Sorcerer.  I will probably be DM'ng up to the time the PHB comes out.

My first character that I play will be shortly after the PHB lands.  Like Puk, I am not sure when I will get a chance to make a character and I speculate it will be by the time more classes are available.

seeisay?

Edit: Ninjah...ur, seewesay?

Alduin Perivel, my take on the Noble Fighter pregen. For an added bonus, he sounds like Prince Naveen from The Princess and the Frog. lol . Of course, after him, I'm going to have to make a Rogue. :D

I'm planning on playing a martial healer with daily powers, damage on every miss, and total access to at-will wish spells. Oh, he can also sneak attack, cast mass heal at will, and add to his hit dice by draining the blood of monsters, PCs, and NPC's.

Oh...wait...I'm not playing, I'm going to be DMing.

I'll make a friendly NPC, for sure. Whatever is needed, depending on what my friends and wife choose. (We have a small group.)

I am very excited about bringing my "old favorite" characters into new versions of D&D (or D&D-like games) in order to see if the system does a better job at letting the character be how I always wanted it to be...

I'll probably literally flip a coin (barring my group surprising me by taking the lead on deciding what character to play, rather than all taking the "I'll play whatever role is left once everyone else has chosen," stance) to decide between noble-that-refuses-his-duty-because-his-dream-is-to-be-a-legendary-hero Fighter and brash young evoker - a pair of characters that I have played for years which D&D 5e (at least the basic rules) seem designed specifically for.

Well, maybe not clerics, but I don't "hate" them or else.

I was the sole GM in my group for a long time. Aside from two one-off playtest sessions, I've haven't actually run a game in several years, though. I've been enjoying just being able to play some PCs, but I am starting to get the GM's itch again.

A warlock. Not sure which pact yet, but definitely a warlock.

Though I'll probably have to do a DMing stint before I get to run a PC.

Hence the alphabetical order.

Toss up between a fighter and a rogue depending on tomorrow and most likely a fighter. I find both more interesting than wizard or cleric so far. That also depends on if I end up DMing or playing PC before I get to the PHB. If I DM until then it'll be a bard for sure.

I'll be DMing, rebooting my "Everything D&D Ever" campaign from scratch.  Like someone above, I'll cook up a NPC or two to fill out the party if needed.

That said, with every edition change, I have learned the game by creating characters as I go through my first read-through so I'll probably make one of everything just for the hooey of it.

Dwarf Wizard to start because that was my favorite character back in 3.5.

Given that I'm the only person in the regular group that reads and speaks English easily, I'll be stuck with DMing for quite a bit, unless a friend of mine finds some spare time in his schedule.

If I get a chance, I'll play an elf fighter-duelist, and once we have some infos on them, I'll switch to an old favorite of mine, the half-elf cleric.

Our homebrew playtest game will migrate to 5B starting now, then to 5A as and when the books drop.

First conversions will be the rogue, mage and cleric to 5B. The paladin, druid, bard and barbarian will have to wait for the PHB. Meanwhile, we will use 5B rules and hybrid character features.

The rogue is a female human with a noble background so she should be okay.

The high elf evoker/priest will convert straight to a wizard/acolyte. He will change one spell to replace one that's not in the 5B list.

The dwarf cleric has a custom background combining priest with bounty hunter. We have to get the download tonight to see how custom backgrounds will work.

Dravos [DRAV-us] was born 23 winters ago in late 1465 DR in Zhentil Keep. Born son of a prostitute mother and a Zentilar father, he suffered unspeakable mistreatments during his youth, until he could flee. Dravos started working as a dock hand at the age of 14, and sailed away as soon as he could, navigating on the Moonsea wherever ships offering work would take him. He eventually crossed the wrong kind, a pirate ship called The Tortula, a trading vessel operating for the Zhentarim, also known as the black network. He soon started to delve into piratry and has become a buccaneer ever since. Between assignments on whatever ships he can find, Dravos look for mercenary work on land. Selfish by nature, he only cares about himself and how much he can make, this by any means necessary. Dravos is a tall bald man who covers his head under a leather hat and a bandana. Blind of one eye resulting from an “accident” he won’t just tell about, he had it recently sewed shut. Dravos wears a leather vest and belt covered of fake gold trinket made of tarnished brass and carry typical sailors’ weapons, a curved hilted short sword known as a cutlass and a hilted parrying dagger also called a main-gauche.

I'm so torn as to what I want to play.  I doubt I'll be able to play before the PHB, as I expect to be DMing.  When the PHB does drop, I'll probably be playing either a Fighter, Ranger, or Wizard, but I won't actually decide until I see the book.  I'm hoping the Ranger has been changed up a little from the playtest, it could do with something nice at level 1.  If I make a wizard, I'll probably remake my 2e Elven Wizard, Tellan.  He was pretty idealistic and out-going until several game events kind of turned him sour, and he sort of became a dick.  I'd probably play him as his more idealistic self, as that was the main idea to begin with.

Let's find out.  3d6, in order:

STR 8

DEX 14

CON 14

INT 13

WIS 9

CHA 12

Hm.  Looks rather roguish to me.  Gotta play me a lightfoot halfling thief, I think.  So let's see, that's +2 Dex, +1 Cha.

So I've got

Str 8 (-1)

Dex 16 (+3)

Con 14 (+2)

Int 13 (+1)

Wis 9 (-1)

Cha 13 (+1)

Yup, I can work with this.

The first character I've rolled up isn't actually for play, but for something I call "The Seven Character Project." I started it a few weeks back with the goal of making a character in every edition from the original to 5th, one each week. I was going to start making the 5th edition one next week, but I finished the 4th edition character so fast that I decided to get an early start. The seventh and final character is, as of this writing, Aramil Galanodel, wood elf cleric. If people are interested I can post a link to the Google doc with all the characters.

As for a character for actual play, I'll probably play a wild sorcerer in my friend's Tyranny of Dragons game if he allows it. If not, a bard.

Appearance:

  • I have rich, copper-colored skin, and hazel eyes.
  • I wear my black hair in a mass of thin braids that spill over my shoulders to the middle of my back.
  • I bear a Thayan slave brand tattooed across my forehead.

Personality Traits:

  • I always have a plan for what to do when things go wrong.
  • I am incredibly slow to trust.  Those who seem the fairest often have the most to hide.

Ideals:

  • Freedom: Chains are meant to be broken, as are those who would forge them. (Chaotic)

Bond:

  • Secreted within the locket that I wear around my neck, I bear a seedling of Fanhadon, the Great Tree from which my people took their name.  I will not rest until I have found a place to plant the seedling so that my tribe can be born anew.  I owe it to my ancestors. I will trust in my dream visions to guide the way.

Flaw:

  • I am wanted in Thay for killing the nephew of a tharchion.  There is a considerable bounty on my head.

As far as I know, I am the last of my tribe.  We were a peaceful and insular community of wood elves who called ourselves the Fanhaen. Secreted within the locket that I wear around my neck, I bear a seedling of Fanhadon, the Great Tree from which our people took their name.  The tree that had sheltered us and given us life from time immemorial was singed to ash in a single night of horrors that will live on in my nightmares for as long as I draw breath. On that fateful night, a Thayan war party savagely assaulted our treetop village in the depths of the Yuirwood, catching us completely unawares.  They used their foul magic to slip past our sentries, slaughtering most of us in our sleep. A scant few of the children were spared for transport to the Thayan slave markets in the east. My older sister, Shaori, and I were among the few survivors.

Our captors treated us worse than dogs, but I resolved to remain strong for the sake of my sister, who was born without the gift of sight. The man who bought us was a powerful noble named Yakovel, third in line to the Tharchion of Priador. His first act as our master was to press my gentle sister into service as a courtesan.  I myself was inducted into a brutal training program engineered to produce highly skilled infiltrators and assassins. Many of the boys who began the training with me did not survive to witness our bloody commencement rite some six years later.  I persevered because my sister depended on me.

In the years that followed, I performed many unspeakable acts in the name of our master.  I had numerous chances to escape, but I would not leave my sister behind.  Perhaps she sensed that she was holding me back, or perhaps she finally lost the will to live.  Whatever the case, I stole into Shaori’s chambers one morning to find her corpse cooling in the sun, an empty bottle of hemlock clutched in one hand, and her locket clutched in the other.

The rest of that day is a blur to me…  Waiting amidst the gardenias for my master to appear on his nightly stroll… Slipping past the body guards to bury my dagger in his chest… Hurtling over the wall and disappearing into the shadowy byways of the market district before the general hue and cry could be raised.  I should have felt anger, elation, or crushing despair.  Instead, I felt only emptiness.

I managed to steal aboard a trading vessel that was bound for Sembia the next day.  That night, as I sank into an exhausted trance amidst the crates and barrels littering the ship’s hold, I experienced the first of many dream visions.  Shaori appeared to me, garbed in the ceremonial gear and body paint of a Fanhaen warrior priestess.  She told me about the seedling of Fanhadon secreted in her locket, and implored me to journey west that I might seek out a glade hidden from the prying eyes of men in which to plant the seedling.  She promised to appear to me again in order to provide further instructions once the time was right.

I gradually made my way westward to Neverwinter, where I plied my trade as a freelance thief for a time, before receiving an offer from a well-meaning old dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker.   He had caught me with my hand in his belt pouch, but instead of involving the local authorities, he resolved to offer me a chance at “rehabilitation”.  Somewhat amused, and lacking any brighter prospects at the time, I consented to his offer.

PC: Lucius Balzaus Platinus - LN Fighter (Two-Weapon). Human. High Stats: Str, Cha, Dex. Yummy Charisma Contests in battle to simulate Command. (Original was a Paladin Blackguard who used Command to take enemy weapons and cut them down, coup de grace then move on to the next enemy mercilessly.

DM NPCs (Because you know we all have one... or two...)

Ivstinus Wistun - LG Fighter (Protection) Human.  High Stats: Dex, Cha. ((Remake of my favorite paladin ever - may the highest heavens shine down upon you when the class is released, Wizards. Lux et Caritas!

Sash Firebane - NG Wizard. High Elf (Qualinesti). High Stats: Int, Dex. ((Remake of my first red mage from old school dragonlance adventure in 1997.))

When I get to play...

I've been thinking about a human, fiendish pact book Warlock who turns his back on his patron very early and with his Sage background and 1st level Loremaster Feat (or equivalent) has the backstory to justify still accessing his patron's powers, having stolen the knowledge in the form of an unearthed codex written by a long dead warlock of ages past who had the same pact, or something like that.

I imagine his patron might be a little... upset...

I mostly (pretty much only nowadays) DM, but I have a couple of NPCs that I use regularly to aid my players. My first official D&D 5E character is a halfling rogue named Kilwillie that I converted from the most recent playtest rules. He just became level 4 right after Basic was posted, and I converted him right away. I have a 3rd level halfling wizard named Bebo that I'll be updating soon.

I need to wait for the PHB, because my first character is going to be converted from my last 4E game: a half-orc Berserker (Fighter/Barbarian in 5E terms) named Evalyn.  She is always eager to make new friends, self-conscious of her inner rage, tries to live up to the ideal of being a knight of old, would do anything to keep her parents safe, and is very naive and trusting.

Her father is a lesser noble (pretty much in title only).  He lost his wealth and holdings after a number of bad marriages.  His current wife (and the only one he really cares for) is a half-orc innkeeper.  He spent the last of his money on trainers for Evalyn.  She only recently learned about this, and it is part of why she started adventuring: she wants to pay her parents back and return the family's glory and honor.

I just recently played a one-shot session with Ironbound Morgrimm, a dwarf wizard. He's got a 16 Strength and Constitution, 14 Dexterity and a 12 Intelligence, and he's fun as hell to play. Scale mail, a warhammer held in both hands and two handaxes make him pretty deadly in melee, and he's got the Sage background for a sort of Indiana Jones feel, the rough-and-tumble tomb-raiding scholar type. Although it was rough getting his equipment: having to buy my weapons and armor instead of taking a pre-set gear list meant I had to wheel and deal with the DM to convince him to let me buy my spellbook one page at a time instead of all at once. We went with small iron rods, each with one spell etched into it.

Almost all of his spells are of the "Brains? Who needs 'em!" variety. The only spell that actually needs Intelligence that I chose for him is fire bolt, which I picked as a last-ditch ranged attack and a way to start fires. Otherwise, he just runs around with magic missile and shield for offense and defense, respectively, and has the ritual spells in his spellbook for emergencies. I'm already scouring the higher level spells for anything that doesn't need Intelligence, and it seems like there are actually a pretty decent amount, even in the basic rules. Between buff spells, a few spells here and there that don't allow saves or require attacks, and ritual spells of various types, I'm pretty sure I won't have a problem ignoring the stat entirely even as he gains levels.

He's not gonna be the most efficient warrior around, but he was a blast to play even for a little one-shot, and I can't wait to get a chance to play him again.

I really lije playing with at-will only characters for some reason. I don't like the daily mechanics for Wizards, so when I get a chance to be a pkayer U'll be picking the class with the most variable at-wills (I still like making choices on my turn). I'd be okay with 'encounter' abilitues so I think I'll like Rogues, Complex Fighters, and Warlocks (if they're like the playtest version). I also like playing against type so I'll make something like a halfling fighter or a dwarf warlock. Either that ir I'll break out my old character Aust the Elf Fighter.

But if Psions are rekeased before I get to play as a PC, well lets just say I'll have a field day, but I suspect I'll get to play soon since every group I've been in has players DM for a single adventure and thrn trade off with someone else who adds to the campaign.

From what I have seen in Basic, I want to try out Captain Greenbottle, stout halfling dex-fighter with the soldier background.  I will take the protection fighting style, and go for light armour and rapier and shield (with some darts and a dagger in case things go ranged - I don't think I can use a bow and a shield).  I will take acrobatics and athletics for my fighter skills and then because of the "doubling up"  of athletics in the background take intimidate and stealth for the soldier skills (sorry not to get Perception too, but them's the breaks - wisdom will be my third stat).  Captain Greenbottle will be polite and respectful, but without fear.  Greenbottle will be LG (and his flaw will be that L part - Greenbottle respects the law).  Greenbottle seeks to protect people that cannot protect themselves, the helpless that need help, and all that good guy stuff.

Captain Greenbottle worked up from rookie to captain in the city guard of a major human city, but on having heard of threats building elsewhere, wishes to investigate and so has asked for (and received) an indefinite leave of absence to do so.

After racial adjustments, the 1st level Greenbottle is:

Str 10, Dex 17, Con 16, Int 10, Wis 11, Chr 10.  I will improve Dex/Wis first, then Dex, Con, Con, Wis, Wis, Wis (no feats in Basic).  For a second fighting style I am currently undecided, but have 10 levels to think about it.  Maybe the +1 AC.

I made a character to try out the character creation process for 5e (it's one of my little things: i get a new system, I test it by doing a one of the most basic gamer tasks - Character creation), but as for actually making a character I care about? I'll wait for the PHB and see all the little options that I have.

Lauriana Silverfoot, Moon Elf Bladesinger. I figure High Elf Fighter (Eldrich Knight) should play this about right. Not sure on the Background, however, as I don't have much knoweldge on the fate of Myth Drannor for 5E, but I'm thinking Noble.

Daughter of Aldric Silverfoot of Cormanthor (my favorite 2E Realms PC) and cousin to Quilliion Al'Re, Lord of the Al'Re Gold Elf House of Evermeet (my favorite 3E Realms PC). I like tying my Realms character's together, to create a meta-plot, even if it's just for me. Aldric was from when I was in college, and when I started playing with another group afterwards, I made Quillion and worked with the DM to intergrate his background with events from Adric's time. I still have the same DM, so I'm quite sure he'll let me play my old character's daughter.

I just got an opportunity to roll up a character.  Here are my rolls.  18, 16, 16, 15, 14, 12

I suppose my first character will be a rogue.

I am actually thinking of going with two classics for 5e, Cleric and Wizard, then eventually converting my 4e characters over to 5e as well.

I'm probably going with a fighter/monk when recreate my avenger for 5e. I have to wait for the PHB to see if supreme flurry or unarmered defense change dramatically.
