During my course of dming and playing ravenloft 3.x we as a group had a similar issue that most have when the players outgrew the domain they were in. infact ive hear that even levels 1-9 are the sweetspot for ravenloft.

as a dm i had the simple but effective and ultimatly time consuming fix of "everything-you-can-do-i-can-do-better". meaning if a player could qualify for a prestige class or feats, so could mobs/monsters/bosses. imagine the surprize on the players faces when they discovered the wererat in richemulot was a talented rogue/dualist. or the werewolf they chased from verbrek to invidia was an accomplished barbarian/frenzied berserker, leading them into a trap devised by a party of lycanthropes. the one that was most memorable was the werefox sorceress/mindbender. it worked with most class related mobs, it just happened that i favored lycanthropes for mid to late level sessions.

as a side effect my powergaming group toned themselves down. eh, that was then.

later on expedition to castle ravenloft came out and it had a section for modern campigns to continue in this book. whn i saw that it got me to thinking considering i owned most of the modern books i went back and gave it a look. we tried three games after and it seemed to blend perfectly in so many ways for our game. perfect for me because the spell lists were short and no class was bigger or badder then the monsters and mobs already there. perfect for the players because they grew aand felt accomplished with leveling and growing.

our first game into it was soldiers serving in the middle east who get sucked to har akir in their hummer with limited supplies. that one lasted for levels 1-17. another game was in lamordia where a group of adventurers from the "past" part of the modern game are trying to figure out a body they found in the snow. a blizzard comes, taking them into the snow drifts of lamordia, levels 1-13. the final game took us in the lower twenties, (20-23 levels)

so unofficially modern is the system we use for players, and "regular" classes for npc's mobs and the like. i guess my question is has anyone else found success similar to this or used thier own system to expand thier ravenloft games?

Interesting, you could have villages from Nazi Germany and/or Stalinist Russia transported by the Dark Powers to Ravenloft. To make it nasty have them connected to each other with a Nazi dark lord in one village and a Communist in the other.
