| #1watersdepthSep 29, 2009 17:40:42 | In the spirit of October, I am throwing my gamers into a temporary campaign in Ravenloft with the adventure of Graefmotte, Font of Sorrow from the Dungeon section. I am thinking of using the Midnight Slasher as seemingly the main villain, but the true villain is Lord Graef (i'm probably butchering the name) who murdered his son(whom I changed into a young girl) who he murdered in a fit of rage. Once Graefmotte was moved into Ravenloft, the Midnight Slasher moved into another city to hunt for victims. But the Midnight Slasher found the slain body of the young girl, being a messed up character but having sympathetic & protective feelings for the child, the Midnight Slasher took the body away. In the original adventures of Graefmotte, there's a ghost, the slain son. In my version, there's still a ghost but its of the slain girl who tries to show to the gamers who her killer is. The visions she leaves behind are vague- a man figure, knife, and her death- this could lead to the confusion that the Midnight Slasher did it. But she's trying to show is that her father committed the sin. Is this a good story or is there something else I can flush out or push? |

There is a certain element of "You can't always win, but you can never win easily" that Ravenloft is great for, that you could apply to them catching the Midnight Slasher, but not being able to go home, then they realize that, while the Midnight Slasher was a villain that needed to be brought to justice, he wasn't the real reason they were trapped there. The difficult part of this is to not make it seem contrived or a sucker-punch to the PCs. Make a lot of the obvious evidence point to the Slasher, but also have some vague evidence that either a very canny group of PCs could figure out early OR look at after they realize the Slasher isn't the target they wanted and go "OH! How did we MISS that?" |
