Hey Gang, running a large 3.5 campaign right now. I have the characters splitting off into a side adventure on Markovia from the Ravenloft campaign setting. Characters are between 6th and 7th level. I have a good adventure hook my one problem is the stats for Dr markov his Broken Ones.

Any good suggestions?

thanks

Good question!

Way back in the day I played in an adventure set on Markovia called "Neither Man Nor Beast". Maybe you can find it on line somewhere and covert the main characters.

But since its hard to find (to say the least) here is what i suggest: make 'em up. Despite the fact that I hate 4th ed, I do one thing they suggest quite a bit and just make up stats based on pretty much nothing except what the PCs can do.

For example, if the fighter of the party has an attack modifier of +10 and do about, then I'll make the minor bad guys AC 15 and 20 hp, just because I figure he should hit most of the time and kill them in about two shots. Then I'll make the big baddie's AC 20-25 and 50 hp, just because he should hit less often.

The Broken Ones are beast men with features that resemble panthers, beasts, etc, usually things you can see in a jungle setting. They are also low level thugs, so I'd say they have pretty low AC (5-8 over the fighter's base attack bonus) and enough hp to survive two or three shots. They also swarm, so use that tactic as often as possible.

Markov is a different animal, literally. He is a shapechanger who can take any animal form. The change take a full round, but he heals 2d6 damage every round. He takes on the physcial stats of the creature he emulates but his mental stats remain the same. he can never take a truely human form, so he says in a gorilla form that maximize his physical stats.

He is listed as a 0-level human in the old domain of dread book with the following stats, although all of them are adjustable depending on his form:

Str: 19, Dex 18, Con 16, Int 17, Wis 9, Cha 8
AC 6 (same as an AC of 14)
Movement: 12 (same as a speed of 30 ft)
Level/Hit Dice: 5
HP: 24
THACO: 15 (+5 attack bonus)
Damage: 1d4/1d4 (claws)

Now, lets face it, 6th-7th level party will cream him. Here is what I suggest:

Stats (the same)
AC: 19-22 (depending on how tough your fighter is)
HP: 50
Attack: +9 - +12 (1d6+4)

All adjustable based on the form he takes, but this is the form he fought in in Neither Man Nor Beast.

Have fun!

Find monsters of the right CR and customize. Change weapons to slams or bites. Or treat them as classed gnolls or orcs.

Or track down a copy of Denizens of Dread, the 3.5 Ravenloft Monster Manual from Arthaus. It's got Broken One stats, though I don't recall how good they were. (or make do with Denizens of Darkness, the 3.0 version)

hey guys, thanks so much for the ideas....yeah its going to be a fun night of gaming tonight. the group will be stoked on this mini side adventure. I am going to use a combination of the two suggestions given. unfortunately i have no access to any of the ravenloft books, modules, supplements....bummer. I got the island of markovia fleshed out with ruins, abandoned villiage, the monastery, markovs compound/manor, "villiage" of the broken ones. there are no others on the island. the only folks on the island are the broken ones, markov and the monks at the monastery....

ill write more and let you all know how it goes tonight.
