Hello All!

In the movie Silent Hill, there was a scene which the protagonist had to cross a hallway but the undead nurses where blocking the way. Attracted to the protagonist's flashlight, the nurses advanced forward, but once the protagonist turned it off, they stopped and just twiched in place.

My gamers are thrown into Ravenloft, who isn't thrown into Ravenloft? Ravenloft is about dread, darkness, a twist in the story and a sense of hopelessness; not about gore and brutality. Before they face one of the minor DarkLords, they'll come across a hallway which is littered with the house's undead servants. There are so many ways I can create this encounter and I need your wealth of information, creativity to maximize the encounter.

Here are some of my thoughts, please let me know which scene works for you.

  1. The gamer's light activates the mass of undead to move towards the gamers. Should I have the zombies ALL zombie miniors or a mix?

  2. The gamer's encounter darkness in the hallway which leads to the DarkLord's chamber, no light source can break through it. So they have to stumble into the dark and might touch an undead that's on the way, causing the undead to strike and the undead have darkvision advantage (Combat Encounter).

  3. Or, have this play out as a Skill Challenge to avoid the undead, then again, adventurer's love to beat stuff up.

Just let me know which sounds good and how I can push the idea. Thank you!

option 3 to have it start as a skill challenge with failure devolving into a monster encounter with failure, and perhaps information into the background or story for success.

I think the players should have some chane to discover the light activates/deactivates the undead. To make it more interesting they should feel they have no chance to simply wade through the zombies or this trick becomes less interesting.

The SH game series has given me a lot of chew over in terms of good horror.
