I DM'd a Ravenloft-esque campaign about a year back (It's since gotten a lot more lighthearted), and I wondered what you all thought was effective. I personally am a fan of solid moodlighting: I would dim the lights just enough so that people could see and make sure that no sunlight (if it was still daytime) was present. This usually got people one edge. I also made sure to keep the area around as quiet as I could. If there was going to be background noise, it would have to be ambient. Storytelling was full of pauses, which I found to be fairly effective. What about you all? |

On one occasion I remember scibbling the words to such a thing on a piece of paper and tearing the edges then leaving it out under some mud for a few days. The result was a great prop for the story. |

Also, when it was cold out, I'd leave a window open, so people would be just cold enough to not be comfortable. I also did the hand-written, treated letters and other handouts. All in all, it worked. |
