| #1Dragon9Jun 05, 2009 15:24:59 | I ordered my Gencon events and they're filling up. All the lower level stuff is sold out. Some of the Impiltur mod is still open (levels 4-7) and lots of openign for the paragon level core. 3 slots of the special are still open and still have between 20 and 45 tickets left. All the low level stuff is sold out. So if you didn't get your tix yet and you can't play high, plan on getting generics. Unless Mr. Christ gets an influx of more judges. |
| #2swiftbrookJun 05, 2009 20:27:42 | I'm surprised. It been a month or more that tickets have been on sale and the tables have not sold out. Living Greyhawk use to sell out in hours. Is it 4th ed? Forgotten Realms? The economy? -Swiftbrook |
| #3Dragon9Jun 05, 2009 20:30:35 | Most of the stuff that's still open is either higher level (the Core, not a lot of people are Paragon yet I think) and the SPEC. I think it's mostly that people are excited about the start of the mini campaign and the Ad. Co. adventure so those filled up and I think the MINI is a 2 rounder IIRC, so that's another reason the SPEC is still open. (and the SPEC is 1 round... very odd) EDIT: Also, my previous years experience with Gencon has been that RPGA events have not been on sale this early. I actually went onto their website to just order a badge and see when event reg would be up and it already was. Previous years LG stuff went on sale not long before the con. (last year it was real close to the con with the whole wait and see thing WotC was doing) I remember leaving a family function to go home and register when it opened and stuff was almost sold out when I checked out. |
| #4ibixatJun 06, 2009 0:46:17 | Hopefully I can get into a couple slots when I'm not running with generics bought on the spot, if not, well naps are good too. |
| #5Dragon9Jun 06, 2009 18:22:47 | Yeah, gonna try myself to get into the low level Core on generics. I'm only goign up on Friday and have 2 slots scheduled. Too bad you can't pre-purchase generics. At least I didn't see any way to do that. |

At least I didn't see any way to do that. I'll be there all weekend, running ADCP1-1 8 slots, I actually hope to get in on a spec 1-3 run or whatever core it is that is 11-14, if I don't get them all slot 0'd before the con, or even if I do I'll have two 11's by then. You should swing by the ADCP marshalling and say something like "hello I'm dragon9" and then run off to your game =P |
| #7Dragon9Jun 07, 2009 22:17:23 | I'll try. I have a badmemory though and Gencon is a couple months away still. ![]() |
| #8WavesterJun 08, 2009 7:58:41 | I'm surprised. It been a month or more that tickets have been on sale and the tables have not sold out. Living Greyhawk use to sell out in hours. Some Greyhawk's sold out in hours and others never did. Same with LFR. We've also focused on LFR at the shows in ways we never did with LG (LG usually topped out at 5 rounds at Gencon - LFR tops out this year at 9 rounds plus 3 LFR Open slots and 3 LFR Midnight Madness slots). If we only had 5 rounds of LFR I guarantee they all would have been sold out a month ago. We've also expanded our judge pool and table counts. We'll sit 15-20% more tables now then we did the last year of LG at the show. So 4th and LFR are doing just fine and in fact better then LG ever did at Gencon. The economy may be in the crapper still but people like to game and tickets sales have been great to this point. |

I'll coordinate that on the judges list. Otherwise, I am running it on Friday and Saturday on the 1 PM slot. |

I think the state of the economy doesn't matter much. it may for some, but Gencon was always somethign that people saved up for. Their annual "pilgrimage." In times of economic distress it can serve as an escape also. a few days of fun before getting back to the grind. It's always like that, truth be told (for me at least), but in times like these, even more so. Same reason why movie ticket sales go up in bad times. People need an escape from their woes. |
| #11telvin3dJun 08, 2009 18:51:10 | It's also not that expensive. Depending on travel and such you can spend as much on a long weekend hiking and camping. So a luxury, but not an unreasonable one for the amount of entertainment. |
| #12Dragon9Jun 08, 2009 22:11:00 | True, all things considered... unless you go into the crack den... errrrr... I mean the dealer's room. |

I'm attending Gencon for the first time in decades (last time I went it was in Milwaukee). There were living greyhawk events then but I was always reluctant because there was the same feeling of being 1st level characters in a room full of high levels. I registered for a living FR event this year and I'll try it out. Mostly I just want to play a few games but the living events were almost the last games available. I guess I like the concept of having a character persist over time, but not having gotten in at the beginning, I wonder how well the system handles new players. I guess I also like my gaming fast and loose (and fun) rather than very tightly controlled. Hopefully it will be a fun experience for me this year. |
| #14kenobi65Jun 22, 2009 16:46:37 | I guess I like the concept of having a character persist over time, but not having gotten in at the beginning, I wonder how well the system handles new players. Really, the biggest hurdle to entering LFR now is the availability of low-level play where you live / play. Many experienced LFR players have PCs at a variety of different levels, and especially now that new low-level adventures are becoming available, are willing to play "low." But, we do see some comments from folks on this board that their local LFR players are only interested in playing their higher-level PCs. So, it's really a function of who you have to play with, rather than "the system." |
| #15smerwin29Jun 22, 2009 20:20:39 | As the wise Kenobi says, the campaign staff is very aware of the need to give new players that chance to get into the campaign smoothly. It is a priority of ours to make sure we release adventures and promote new offerings on a regular basis that act as a gateway to new players. GenCon is definitely one of those gateways. We make sure we offer a great many adventure for 1st-level characters, both for people who are just starting in the campaign and people who are invested in the campaign but want to start a new character. When you return from GenCon, or if you see any of the LFR campaign staff wandering around at GenCon, please let us know how your experience was. Shawn LFR Global Admin |
