PAX 10
8/29-8/31/2008 (Labor Day Weekend)
Washington State Convention & Trade Center
Seattle, WA

Interested in judging? Email me at comixguru@yahoo.com.

PAX is on again and featuring the Living Forgotten Realms special, 2 new LFR premiers, plus a rerun of 2 other LFR mods from GenCon. We'll also have Star Wars stand alone, Return to the Moathouse (Classic style mod, done up 4E), plus D&D 4E delve and more.

We are in a new location, in a hotel meeting space adjacent to the convention. More details to come!

Event list:
* A full 6-slot program of Living Forgotten Realms
--> Living Forgotten Realms Core Special from GenCon (2-rounder)
--> Four Living Forgotten Realms events, including 2 premiers not at GenCon
* Return to the Moathouse 4E classic from Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil!
* New Stand Alone Star Wars RPGA event
* Brand new 4E D&D Delve and last year's Rebel Run Star Wars delve
--> play for tokens to get access to exclusive minis and reward cards!

REGISTRATION: You will need to pay for admission via PAX's Penny Arcade site. Sign-up for individual games will be via WARHORN.NET. The schedule is not ready yet, it should be up on Warhorn in mid-July.

JUDGE CALL: I'm looking for judges and assistance! I expect lots of interest in 4th Edition and in the Living Forgotten Realms campaign from new walk-in players. Please, if you can come and help out, even for a slot or two, I will get you something nice.

Judge Rewards will be generous, including:
Judge 1 slot - mini-booster or dungeon tiles
Judge 2 slots - Hardcover Wizards 4E book (Forgotten Realms Source Book, etc)
Judge 3 slots - Free admission, plus hardcover book, mini-booster and RPGA gamemaster bowling shirts
Judge 4 slots - Free admission, 2 hardcover books, shirts
Judge 5 slots - Free admission, 2 hardcover books plus mini-booster or tiles, shirts
Judge all 6 slots - Free Admission, 3 hardcover books, shirts

You can swap out hardcover books for additional minis or titles, one HC book = 2 minis/tiles.

Shirts: The shirts are a very nice button down bowling shirt that will make it easy to put on and take off if you running/non-running a table. If this is your first time receiving the RPGA Gamemaster Bowling shirt, you will receive a pair of shirts. If you received a pair at Origins, GenCon this year, you'll receive just one new shirt.

Hotel Space for Judging: I am awaiting word on hotel space for judges willing to run 5 or more slots. I may be able to provide 4 in a room space for a very limited number of judges willing to commit to helping out 5 outta 6 slots.

Slot Zeros: Slot Zeros will commence in mid to late July. Once again I will run slot zeroes in Portland, Eugene/Springfield, and Seattle areas.

Email me at comixguru@yahoo.com to sign-up to judge.

Hey Robert, just wondering if there had been a change of schedule as to when the adventures being run at PAX would go up on Warhorn. I'm planning on running a bunch of PAX-goers through the adventures that are not going to be offered at the convention on the train up there, but I need to know which ones are going to be run at PAX first.

EDIT: Ah, I see the adventure schedule has been updated. Any idea when registration for the slots will open up?

The schedule is now up at on the Warhorn site. Remember, Warhorn sign-ups are free... but PAX is not. You'll need to pay to attend PAX and have a valid badge to play in any of the games.

We will be running:
EAST1-1 These Hallowed Halls
LURU1-1 Slivers of Eaerlann
IMPI1-1 Alone
MOON1-1 Nature’s Wrath

Plus the special:
SPEC1-1 Shades of the Zhentarim

In addition, we'll have a great D&D 4E delve that you can play for promo cards and other rewards. Plus, Moathouse, Star Wars Saga classic adventure and Delve.

I live in Portland and would love to come up to get a great start on LFR. However, $45 is a little steep (for me), is there any volunteering I can sign up for to cut costs? I would/could judge but I don't know how to get certified (working on Herald lvl GM test, should have it passed by the end of the week):D .

Thanks!

Judging 3 slots at the convention will get you into the event for free. I'm sure we can find something for you to do at the convention if you are flexible and willing.

4E is new, not many folks have a lot of experience with it. We have some events that are easier to run than others (for instance, the D&D Delve is much less to handle but does require a good grasp of the combat system), and we also need Star Wars Saga and Minis judges (if you have experience in either of those, probably not).

Send me an email with a fuller description of your experience (4E, 3.5, etc) to --

I have run several 4E games as DM, gotten the combat system down and I have run several SW Saga ed's before 4E....no miniature experience yet...though I could try to catch a game perhaps before PX ( only own 3.5 Mini's right now, mostly just monsters for table topping). Very willing to get involved and help out...tends to be even more fun that way

This will be my first real living campaign and convention play so I have some newbie questions.

When you sign up you can pick a class/role that you expect to play. Should I come with two characters though in case the first role I picked is covered by too many people?

I assume for the two round special you will keep your same DM and group though both rounds?

For the dungeon delve do you run it multiple times? The summary of the adventure seems to imply that. I have never done a delve before though so perhaps I am getting the wrong impression.

I assume I can play my same pc in every LFR event? There will be some kind of hand waving to account for how I traveled around the realm between events? Should I worry at all about signing up for events so they take place in some kind of logical order?

Thanks in advance for any answers! I am really looking forward to the experience!

Bring 3 characters just in case.

For the special yes you stay at the same table for 8 hours, with a little break.

I have not played in a delve but my understanding is, if you score high enough you play the next round. The delve is not a part of the living campaign.

There are level restrictions for adventures, but since it is just starting; yes, you can play the same character in every one of them. Hand wave is included for crisscrossing the realms. The story arcs are all just starting so don't worry about continuity yet. Next year you'll want to read the blurbs to see if there are continuations for the adventures you have already done. Those are most likely to be in the regionals.

I have not played in a delve but my understanding is, if you score high enough you play the next round. The delve is not a part of the living campaign.

The delve is a quick 30 or 45 minute dungeon crawl (used to be 30, was bumped to 45 at Origins, don't know what the GenCon version will be yet).

The players get a timer started as they enter the dungeon, and are run through a gauntlet of three combat encounters ("easy" "medium" and "hard"). Tokens are earned based on a players progress, and those tokens can be turned in for prizes (alternate paint D&D minis, RPGA reward cards, and more).

There is *NO* advancement or score-keeping for later rounds in the Delve.

Score-keeping and advancement are for the D&D Championship (D&D Open). There you play through a standard-length D&D module, and are "scored" on a variety of factors (completing the mod, time to complete, did you find , did you kill or talk to instead, etc - what is "scored" varies and is kept secret from the players).

If your party of 5 (with one possible alternate in case someone from your party can't attend the later tables) scores well enough, they advance to round two, and possibly round three.

Hope that helps.

Thank you both for the information!

The slot for the delve is a normal 4 hour slot. Does this mean we play for 45 min and then find something else to do, or do we play the delve multiple times until we "beat" it?

The slots are 4 hours for consistency, the Delve actually runs its own hours.

With your generic ticket you'll play a single 45-minute game. If you want to play another table, it's another generic ticket.

Tickets, as far as I know, have never been required for RPGA events at PAX. Are they changing that this year?

Ah, forgot this was a PAX thread - I've been thinking of how the other major cons run.

I'm not sure how delve entry is/will be handled then.

Sign-ups are located on Warhorn for right now. Last year at PAX they had a large sign-up list at the door to the WotC tabletop rooms where people could put themselves down for an upcoming delve or other adventure. I suspect we'll see something like that this year as well.
