So, one tidbit I can share is the 3 new RPGA Rewards Cards available here at the show.

Attendees have received one free card each with their badge, and more cards are available in the Delve for 10 tokens each.

Below is the text from each card - pics will be coming once I get them cropped and stamped with a "Void" of some sort pics are hidden behind sblocks.

----------

Furious Evocation - General (+1)

"Feel nature's wrath" - Kandara, goliath barbarian
Benefit: When you miss on an attack roll with an at-will evocation, use this card to re-roll the attack roll. You must keep the second result. Turn the card sideways to indicate it is used.

When this card is used, the bonus indicated on it becomes active for the rest of the game session. You may give any one ally the bonus indicated to any one d20 roll after the roll has been made. Only one card bonus may be given to a d20 roll. Flip the card face down or remove it from the play area when the bonus has been assigned.

Those look good Wolfstar, thanks for the heads up. Of course if people look at Gnoll or Drow funny, wait until Mr Spikey turns up in Loudwater.

Very welcome.

Of course, as a reminder - these cards are only "convention exclusive" until next year when they'll (presumably) be rolled into a 2009 Reward Cards pdf for everyone to enjoy (so, Bladelings for everyone in 2010).

Well, the Gnome, Orc, Spellscarred(Sight of the Unseen and Flamespeed) and Shadar-Kai cards weren't made available in the PDF, so...

Then again, Gnome is coming in PHB2, as is Half-Orc, and Shadar-Kai is coming out in this month's Dragon.

True, I don't guarantee these cards will be in the annual compilation, which is way I said "presumably".

However, given the new structure of the Rewards Program, this certainly seems to be the intention.

Only Chris Tulach knows for sure. ;)

Dont be surprised if Orc isnt the march "Play as a" article. That way all of the 3 creation cards are useless. And all of those people that paid money for them are SOL and are no longer special.

I'm completely fine if the Shadar-kai card is no longer needed...that just means I can have another useful card in the stack and have had the fun of playing one for a year

Oooh! I hadn't considered that! I'll be able to free up the slot my gnome card takes! Woot!

I spoke with Chris Tulach at DDXP regarding the promo cards at this year's DDXP as well as the cards that were not included in the PDF.

What I gleaned from what he said (and I word it that way only so that I can be sure to let people know this isn't a direct quotation) is that this year's DDXP cards will be in the PDF, but the creation cards from 2008 will not be. The reason for this was that the RPGA promoted the cards from last year as DDXP/Origins/GenCon-exclusive, where the cards this year are part of the convention support program that all conventions will have access to.

He also confirmed that once there is an RPGA-legal source for your race, you convert your character to the new rules and free up the creation card slot.

And all of those people that paid money for them are SOL and are no longer special.

And all those people who put time and effort into the campaign in order to play something a little unique are also no longer special. Hooray?

I don't get the undercurrent of hostility that often shows up on these boards whenever the possibility of a unique option or reward comes up. Its not like someones ability to do something extra magically denies you something. What is the difference to you between a campaign where no one can play orcs and one where a couple people are allowed to play an orc as a special reward? What has been taken from you?

I have all 3 cards and was not hostile in my post. I just find it funny that people paid money, in some cases decent amounts, to get these cards. And now more likely than not, all 3 of these cards will be rendered useless (2 for sure and the 3rd is likely I suspect). So 8 months into the campaign those people that had the special cards will lose their uniqueness.

Okay I am putting this up here and if someone can have this tossed in as official somewhere I really would appreciate it..

I ran at DDXP ran a lot of slots and in some of them people had the new 'Promo' cards.. now they had one or two of them ... whatever.. but for some reason people are thinking that they can PHOTO copy the PROMO cards and give them to people who either do not have them .. did not get them.. or who want more then one of them in a stack...

NOW the reward cards are a PDF that we got and allow us to print.....

BUT... can the Promo cards be Photo copied and used thus? Is there any 'Official Ruling' on photo coping any of the Promo Cards and then using them?

The more I think of it the more I say no.. but I heard more then one person 'state' they where going to do this and would like to know if there is a rule preventing this....

*smiles*

I am of two minds on this..

1st ~ it was a special that was given out for people who showed up and played or judged... so NO ... and NO on letting them make photo copies just cause they have an original and want TWO in there stack for some reason.

2nd ~ Why not it is a card and this is a game we all are here to play fun and if I person really wants to play an Orc now.. before it becomes legal and they need a card that says they can.. why not give them a photo copy of one you have?

*sighs*

I think I know what the ruling is going to be... NO promo cards can NOT be photo copied .. you have to have the cards given... also more then likely they change the verbage when they are no longer 'Promo' to reward when they send them out as a PDF for any player who wants to download...

so please tell me I am correct.. or ... not...

Technically the five promo cards that did not get sent out as PDFs are still exclusive. However, with them coming out in Dragon articles right away, that is more fiction than fact. By the rules, it should not be allowed but with the RPGA having decided to go the "everybody's special" route for rewards I suspect it is unenforceable at this point.

As I said on the mailing list, we're in somewhat uncharted territory here - as the RPGA rules aren't updatedyet to account for Rewards Cards being in a PDF format that anyone can print.

However, as the rewards program is designed now to give a reward to the people who travel to the conventions, but then reward all RPGA members with those same rewards at a later time - it would seem to go against the goals of the program to allow a photocopy to be used before the PDF is available.

As a rule, I won't be allowing proxies of 2009 cards (perhaps the reason for them being dated?) until the 2009 promo PDF is compiled and released.

I might make an exception for someone who wants to protect their cards and use copies on the table (save vs spills), but I'd still want/expect them to be able to provide originals on a 1:1 basis.

In my humble opinon - the "fun" argument doesn't really apply here. It's not as though someone isn't going to have fun if they can't have a "Lucky Shot" card or can't play a bladeling.

Those options might be more fun - but then, so are conventions, and earning those cards in the first place.

I think the easiest route to go (and the one that's obvious to me and likely will be what's intended) is that you can't use a photocopy. If it's in a rewards pdf, then knock yourself out. Until it shows up in a PDF, a photocopy is a big no (unless you physically have a card per photocopy with you and you ae using the copy to keep your physical versions looking nice).

I dunno. Seems rather prejudicial against all the young gamers who do not have the financial resources to attend cons or cannot even take time off from 'real life' to volunteer at cons. These are still valuable hobbyist that buy products at the local stores and are likely the largest chunk of the gaming population.

Should they be snubbed?

I think these cards should be released into the general circulation a year after the convention. One year of exclusive use seems a fine reward. If character creation cards become 'useless' after a year when the race becomes allowed under CCG then you have 1 year of experience with that race over the new batch AND now no longer need to carry a creation card in your reward card stack.

What does denying them these cards gain you? What is your motivation? Is your happiness relative to the non-con-attendee's inability to get what you have? Do you trade in extra cards on ebay and wish to keep the collectible value of the cards pumped up to their maximum?

I am fine with these cards having a shelf life. This will cut down on the possible theft/fraud/counterfeiting that rare cards might generate. I pay not only for myself to go to DDX/Origins/GenCon but my teenage son as well. I can remember only being able to attend local cons in highschool and college. I can still remember having to pinch pennies to afford gaming supplies. Although I may now be far removed from those limitations, I still have compassion for those young hobbyists.

My happiness is based soley on me... it is not a relativistic thing. I know that some people would rather make $80K while their neighbor made $40K than they would make $250K while their neighbor made $500K. If one neighbor makes twice what the other neighbor makes those that are ruled by jelously would rather make much less just as long as they make more than their neighbor...their family would be better off if they made more but they are 'happier' when those around them are less well off than them.

Be happy with what you have and stop looking at your neighbor.

Great. They are. That's what the end-of-year PDF is going to do - make the cards from the year available to every member of the RPGA.

We can turn this whole argument around.

Be happy with what you have and stop looking at your neighbor.

Hmmm... you could say the same thing about those who are supposedly being "snubbed."

Is your happiness relative to the non-con-attendee's inability to get what you have?

Is their happiness relative to having the exact same thing as everyone else? If Jimmy has widget A and Johnny doesn't... does that make the game unplayable for Johnny? Why should that affect his enjoyment of the game? Or is he just looking on what Jimmy has with envy and then complaining he doesn't have it too?

When the next set of cards is due out for conventions (this summer sometime), the current batch of cards that first appeared at D&D Experience will be available to Rewards members via PDF.

Proxies are not legal for play, and the DM has the right to deny use of proxies at a table. You must either possess the physical card, or be a Rewards member to obtain the PDF and use a printed PDF. In this specific case, the 3 cards released will be available later this year to everyone in the Rewards program, but for now are only available as physical cards.
