Are DMs allowed to play in an adventure at the same time they're running it?

No, at least not in Living Forgotten Realms. Regardless of whether it is a RPGA rule, it is also a good gaming rule in general. A DM should be impartial after all. Personally I even hate running NPCs as side kicks or temporary allies since during a fight monsters require enough attention as it is without me constantly wondering what the NPC will do and whether or not he would make tactical errors or give some genius advice.

Ouch... I know the feeling. Talk with your players. Train them to be a DM. DMing 4E is a lot easier then in 3E, well the basics are anyway.

Having never DMed before 4e, and LFR in particular, I have to agree with this. It REALLY is.

In Fact, I decided I wanted to DM with the Advent of 4e bacause I never had, and it seemed like it'd be easier to learn. I do plan on DMing a 3.5 game in the future, but that'll have to wait until one of the three campaigns we're already playing finishes.
