First RPGA event at Gencon, some easy questions.

Ok, I've read through the New Comer's Info on the RPGA website. I just want to make sure I have this all correct.

First, some info about me: I am not currently a RPGA member. I have no way to become one now because I'm in China and there's not a whole lot of D&D going on (well, none that I can find.) I am going to Gencon on my own and have no pre-defined group. Gencon will also be my first chance to play 4E. I do plan on getting the books and reading up on it of course so I'm not completely blind.

Basically, I can create my character using the updated Character Creation Ruleset (probably a Cleric, I love Clerics) I just downloaded and go, correct? At my first registered RPGA event (Saturday) they will give me the card to fill out to become a member. They'll also put me in a group at that time.

Now, I have another RPGA event later in the day. I should be able to use my same character (as long as I didn't get over level 4), correct? Or, should I have another character created just in case? Again, at that time they'll put me in a group.

Thanks for the info!

All correct. You shouldn't need a second PC; there's no way you'd level out of the adventures during GenCon.

While you won't likely *need* a 2nd character, it is possible after a few adventures you'll likely hit 2nd level, so you might want to have a few options in mind for what you'd like to take as you level.

Also, there's nothing wrong with bringing more than one character either. While splitting your adventures between two different characters might slow your leveling progress, it can simply be fun to play more than one character.

Other than that, you've got the gist of it right, and kenobi, as always, has given you some good tips.

Great point, WolfStar.

When I go to a con, if any of the PCs that I plan to play are anywhere *close* to leveling, I plan out what I'd do for leveling that PC before I go to the con. Between slots at a con isn't the best time to make those decisions, and having everything figured out already saves time.

Ok this will be a stupid question, but I have not found anything definative. Can you play in the same RPGA module more than once? While I will not be doing D&D I am a Saga Star Wars fan and I plan to play in the Betrayal of Darth Revan at Gen Con. Could I play this module in another session at Gen Con a second time? What about at a future con?

(Seems like you could not but the multiple character thing above made me wonder.)

Thanks,
Duncan

No, you can't play the same module more than once. (I think that playing in one of the quickie "delves" is an exception to that rule.)

The multiple character mention above was regarding having more than one character for a campaign (which many Living Greyhawk players do, and I expect many LFR players will do).

You, as a player, can only play each module once, but having multiple PCs gives you a choice of who to play -- different parties may have different needs, and frequently you'll want a range of characters at different levels, so that you can fit into different groupings of players, and play different levels of modules.

Thanks for the answers guys!

I wasn't sure how fast the leveling usually goes during these kind of events, that's why I asked about it. I'm only playing in two RPGA events, one at 8am and one at 7pm, both on Saturday. I should have plenty of time in between to figure out what I want to do to level just in case it happens.

Well, with LFR being brand-new, I don't think we know how fast the leveling's going to go, yet, either.

In Living Greyhawk, you wouldn't have gotten enough XP in the first module to make 2nd level, I can tell you that for sure. We'll have to wait and see how this works in LFR.

I would like to add that no LFR rules have been made public yet, so things might change. One thing I can tell for sure: a PC will not instantly level in a regular convention slot adventure. There might always be exceptions in case of special type of adventures, but that was the case in LG as well.
