Having Reward Cards Present

Hi, all.

Two people asked me the same question about the down-loadable 2008 Player Reward Cards - with the cards available to everyone, do players even need to present a printed copy of the cards? Or, is it assumed "we all have these cards and I am choosing to use cards X and Y this game but I don't have them physically here" gonna fly?

It seems to me that cards are part of your stack, and need to be present at the table with the player. I am thinking that players shall need to print their 2008 cards and physically present them like former cards. Merely saying, "I'm using X and Y" and not actually having printed copies does not seem adequate to me.

Any thoughts?

At my weekly table, the policy has always been that they need to physically have the cards present. I've been making periodic exceptions for those who want to pursue the Zhentarim Infiltration quest tasks but haven't managed to get ahold of the card, as I don't know how many opportunities there'll be and I don't want them to miss out, but aside from that, show me the card or no go. It's way too easy to get confused without having the card physically present, IMO.

They definitely need to be present at the table. First, the 2008 cards are not in fact officially open to everyone. They are open to the people that were sent a password as part of a reward mailing. Now, this covers 90% of players, but still matters.

Second, if a player isn't willing to take the 30 seconds needed to print the card and bring it to the table my sympathy is minimal at best.

And of course the other 9.999% of players who just got the PW from some message board or yahoo list.

I wonder why the even bother with sending out the stamped envelopes, if there is going to be nothing in it beside the password, just put the file online without a password and save yourself the postage.

PS: I am entirely in favor of everyone getting all the reward cards.

Well yeah, but as long as the RPGA is going to keep pretending that the cards are some sort of reward for play, we might as well go along with it.

Personally, they should have just canceled the reward card program once they decided to remove the exclusive aspect. At least then there would not be all the questions over what is legal and what isn't.

The DM should always expect the cards (whether PDF print out or card stock) to be present. The key point is the player needs to choose before the adventure starts which cards he or she will have available for that adventure, and not draw from the much larger pool of what has been released. Also, having the physical card on the table makes it easy to track if it has been spent or not yet, and if there are any bonuses now available for d20 rolls. Otherwise, too confusing and too much chance of errors, whether unintentional or otherwise. I don't see this standard as too much to expect of players.

The physical mailing included, along with the letter with the password, either 3 or 13 RPGA rewards cards.

3 for those with 20-99 points as of the Novemeber closure date, and 13 (including 2 Star Wars cards) for those with 100+ points at that time.

As someone with 100+ points, I only had to print out the first 8 cards in the PDF to have a complete 2008 set. I just wish it had included the earlier Star Wars cards, as well. One of my point sources was playing & GMing the SWSE DoD campaign.
