So I have a home game that I'm interested in using RPGA modules for. I'm curious how this works for my players though. If their characters are going to be "RPGA Characters" does this mean they can only participate in RPGA modules? If we run a game night where the party does downtime/other activities but doesn't go on a dungeon crawl am I then unable to give them experience for their efforts? Same question re: loot.

Thanks

Correct.

They can certainly use those characters for non-RPGA games, but only the experience/loot/etc they gain in the RPGA campaign they're created for (for example: Living Forgotten Realms) will be counted for RPGA sessions.

Well they're LFR characters... and made following those guidelines. What I mean is if I sanction my home game and run it as an LFR game... do I have to actually run the modules, or can I run whatever?

You are suppose to run the modules. No reason you can not embellish story lines to try to create a home campaign feel... Or select modules in an order like all of the core modules in sequence etc. As more mods come out this will be easier to do. Characters that you create for a Living campaign can only advance in the campaign proper by running them through sanctioned events, whether from home(private) or a retail(public) location. They can of course advance outside of the campaign but at that point the character can not return to the campaign.

However the one of the reasons of participating in Living campaigns is to create the ability of making your character mobile ie.from your home group to conventions etc. For this reason campaign guidelines as well as adventures were written to establish a framework to have a balanced campaign and among GM interpretations and styles (a GM being too liberal with magic items or even the other way around). I recommend running the modules but take liberty in making them flow together. Remember this is mostly on the honor system and violating that really destroys the spirit of the campaign.

Yes, if you're running Living Forgotten Realms, even as a home game, you have to actually run LFR modules.

As WolfStar noted, it would be possible for you to run your players' LFR PCs through something that was NOT an LFR module, but they wouldn't be able to gain any in-character awards (XP, gold, treasure, favors, etc.) from it. It'd be like a dream sequence for them. ;)
